Mid-Ranger Battle: Nothing Phone (3a) Pro and Vivo V50 5G

0

Nothing Phone (3a) Pro and Vivo V50 5G are two smartphones battling for the crown of the best mid-ranger in India and while the two phones have drastically different specifications, the only similarity between the two is their pricing. Here’s a comparison between the two devices to help you pick one.

Display

The Nothing Phone (3a) Pro sports a 6.77-inch AMOLED FHD+ screen with a resolution of 1080 x 2392 pixels, HDR10+, 2160Hz PWM dimming, up to 3000 nits peak brightness, 240Hz touch sampling rate, and a 120Hz refresh rate.

Nothing Phone 3a Pro

Vivo V50 5G features a 6.78-inch quad-curved AMOLED Display with a full-HD+ 2392 x 1080 Pixels resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, punch-hole cutout, 20:9 aspect ratio, HDR 10+, 4500 nits local peak brightness and 1300 nits max global brightness, 387 ppi, along with 100% DCI-P3 colour gamut.

Both the devices have similarly sized displays but the V50 5G does a better job than Nothing’s Phone (3a) Pro in terms of brightness so we’ll give it the win in this department. Further, you’ll have to make a decision between a flat display on the Phone (3a) Pro and a quad-curved one on the Vivo V50 5G.

Software & Performance

Under the hood, the Nothing device is powered by the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 mobile platform, paired with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. It runs on Nothing OS 3.1 based on Android 15 and will get OS updates till Android 18 along with 6 years of security patches.

The V50 5G is powered by the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chip, and gets up to 12GB LPDDR4x RAM and up to 512GB of UFS 2.2 storage. The device runs on Android 15-based FunTouch OS 15. Vivo promises to offer 3 major Android upgrades to the device and up to 4 years of security updates.

Vivo V50 5G Launched

Between the Nothing Phone (3a) Pro and Vivo V50 5G, the latter has a slightly better chip in terms of numbers, even if real world usage may not be drastically different. Nothing’s devices takes the win when we talk of software, not only because it’ll offer updates for longer, but also because Nothing OS offers a far superior experience than Vivo’s FunTouch OS on the basis of our experience with previous devices from the two brands. The V50 5G does offer a variant with 512GB storage if you are into that but that model is far more expensive than Nothing Phone (3a) Pro’s top-end 12GB + 256GB version.

Battery and Cameras

On the front, the Nothing device gets a 50-megapixel f/2.2 Samsung selfie camera. The Nothing Phone (3a) Pro has packs a triple rear camera setup, consisting of a 50-megapixel f/1.88 OIS-assisted Samsung primary camera, a 50-megapixel f/2.5 Sony periscope telephoto sensor with 3x Optical Zoom and OIS, and an 8-megapixel f/2.2 Sony ultra-wide angle camera. The device packs a 5000mAh battery with 50W Fast charging support.

The Vivo smartphone has a 50-megapixel f/2.0 selfie camera with autofocus. The rear camera setup consists of an OIS-assisted 50-megapixel f/1.88 primary camera and a 50-megapixel f/2.0 ultra-wide angle lens, both of which are backed by Zeiss optics. It packs a 6000mAh battery with 90W fast charging.

In terms of optics, the Nothing Phone (3a) Pro is clearly the winner due to the extra periscope lens but if you want better ultra-wide angle shots, Vivo’s V50 5G does it better. For battery, Vivo’s device is the obvious choice due to the larger battery and faster charging speed.

Verdict

The Phone (3a) Pro costs Rs 29,999 for the 8GB + 128GB model, Rs 31,999 for the 8GB + 256GB trim, and Rs 33,999 for the 12GB + 256GB version. The Vivo V50 5G is available in an 8GB + 128GB trim that costs Rs 34,999, an 8GB + 256GB model priced at Rs 36,999, and the top-end 12GB + 512GB version that costs Rs 40,999.

The Vivo V50 5G, quite evidently, wins the on-paper specs battle with the superior display, a better chip, a larger battery with faster charging speeds, along with higher storage capacity as well. However, it’s the software experience, the price advantage, and some extra key features it has which the V50 5G lacks, such as NFC, that keeps the Nothing Phone (3a) Pro still in the competition.

It offers a smoother and slightly more stable software interface along with a better rear camera setup and also Nothing-exclusive glyh lights (if you are into that). Further, the Rs 5,000 price gap is a notable one for offering nearly the same value as the Vivo V50 5G which could further make it a better choice for a lot of users.

Nothing Phone (3a) Pro: Should You Buy it Over the Phone (3a)?

0

Nothing has announced the release of the Nothing Phone (3a) Pro globally, including in India, and the device is priced starting at Rs 29,999. The Phone (3a) Pro is the first Pro phone in the brand’s A-series devices and aims to live up to its name with best-in-class cameras, software, and more. However, its pricing lies in quite a competitive segment in the Indian smartphone market and more so, its own sibling, the Phone (3a), costs Rs 5,000 cheaper. Here we are to help you decide whether you should buy the Phone (3a) Pro over the Phone (3a) or opt for the cheaper option.

Nothing Phone (3a) and the Nothing Phone (3a) Pro are quite similar smartphones but they differ in two main areas, and those are design and cameras. While we’ll come to the differences, let’s first discuss the similarities. The two devices get the same display, and that’s a 6.77-inch AMOLED FHD+ screen with a resolution of 1080 x 2392 pixels, support for HDR10+, 2160Hz PWM dimming, up to 3000 nits peak brightness, 240Hz touch sampling rate, and a 120Hz refresh rate.

They are powered by the same chip — Snapdragon 7s Gen 3. They also get the same amount of storage, up to 256GB, but the Pro gets a 12GB model while the standard one has 8GB only. That might not make for a huge difference for an average consumer but for those who do a lot of multitasking, it’d be noticeable.

They have the same battery, a 5000mAh cell with identical 50W fast wired charging. Connectivity options on the smartphones include 5G SA/NSA, Dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 6 802.11 ac (2.4GHz + 5GHz), Bluetooth 5.4, GPS (L1 + L5), USB Type-C, and NFC. There’s an in-display optical fingerprint sensor for security. The devices run on Nothing OS 3.1 based on Android 15 and will get OS updates till Android 18 along with 4 years of security patches.

The devices also sport the same amount of glyph lights and related features with the same Essential Space button on the right spine.

Nothing Phone (3a) series

Coming back to the design, the two devices have their own identities. While the (3a) has a more symmetrical design that carries forward the Phone (2a) design and looks like a true successor, the (3a) Pro tries to break that design similarly and have a distinct look you may not have seen in any other smartphone. The asymmetrical design choice is debatable and may not be everyone’s cup of tea. While it sure will turn heads, it may not be due to the rigt reasons. In total, we feel, the Phone (3a) sports a better look that stands true to its original style.

Speaking of the cameras, on the front, the Nothing Phone (3a) Pro gets a 50-megapixel f/2.2 Samsung selfie camera. The Nothing Phone (3a) Pro has launched with a triple rear camera setup, consisting of a 50-megapixel f/1.88 OIS-assisted Samsung primary camera, a 50-megapixel f/2.5 Sony periscope telephoto sensor with 3x Optical Zoom and OIS, and an 8-megapixel f/2.2 Sony ultra-wide angle camera.

On the front, the Phone (3a) gets a 32-megapixel f/2.2 selfie camera. The Nothing Phone (3a) has launched with a triple rear camera setup, consisting of a 50-megapixel f/1.88 OIS-assisted primary camera, a 50-megapixel telephoto sensor with 2x optical zoom, and an 8-megapixel f/2.2 ultra-wide angle camera.

While the Phone (3a) is definitive upgrade over the (2a) in the camera department, Nothing gave the Pro a better telephoto lens to give it extra leverage and appeal over the vanilla version. The periscope lens on the Pro also looks better on paper with the 3x optical zoom (versus 2x on (3a)) along with higher in-sensor 60x (30x on (3a)). For those without specific camera expectations, the Phone (3a)’s camera system should be sufficient for the average consumer.

Yes, there will be differences due to the better hardware and different sensor on the Pro but in our experience with smartphones, the difference shouldn’t be as huge and definitely not a deal-breaker.

The Phone (3a) starts at Rs 24,999 and the Pro starts at Rs 29,999. For most users, we feel the Nothing Phone (3a) will do justice while the Pro can only be considered if you don’t have budget constraints, have an eye for the unique design, and looking for specific results with the periscope lens.

With the March 2025 Pixel Drop, Gemini Live is getting an upgrade. Google has made improvements in understanding and multilingual conversation with Gemini 2.0 Flash. Now, you can speak to Gemini Live in any combination of over 45 languages without having to change your language setting. Further, multimodal capabilities in Gemini Live which rolled out for Pixel 9 series earlier this year, are now rolling out to all Pixel 6 and newer and Pixel Fold devices.

And in the coming weeks, you’ll be able to interact with Gemini Live through live video and screen sharing with Gemini Advanced. Then, the new suggestions feature in Pixel Screenshots will now automatically suggest screenshots to add to your collections. You can also now use the Pixel Screenshots with your work profile, so you can easily organize receipts from client dinners, expense reports and more.

In addition, you can now create unique images of people to share with your friends and family in Pixel Studio. Next, users in Germany and Japan can experience new AI features such as Pixel Screenshots, Pixel Studio, Pixel AI weather reports and Pollen tracker in the Weather app. Japanese speakers will also get AI-powered summaries in the Recorder app.

Scam Detection, which was limited to phone calls on Pixel devices, is now available in Google Messages with the March 2025 Pixel Drop. Powered by Gemini Nano, Scam Detection protects you from fraud with on-device AI while keeping your conversations private to you. In Google Messages, it uses on-device AI to flag conversational text patterns commonly associated with scams, so it can identify messages that seem harmless, but turn dangerous over time. You’ll receive a real-time warning so you can easily block and report the conversation.

Additionally, Google is expanding Satellite SOS to Hawaii, Alaska, Europe and Canada so you can stay connected to emergency services, even if you don’t have cellular or Wi-Fi.

Further, Google says users can now use Find My Device to share their live location with their friends and family,. You can share your location with someone in the app’s settings, and they’ll be able to see you on the move. And your friends and family can share their location with you, too.

Google has also enhanced the Dual Screen Preview feature on the Pixel fold devices, which now supports video recording. And Pixel 9 Pro Fold users can now use Add Me with Dual Screen Preview as well. There’s also a new Connected Cameras feature, where you can connect your Pixel to another camera — like a GoPro or another Pixel phone — and use the cameras on all these devices to stream to social media platforms from different angles.

Then there’s a new voice-to-type feature with Gboard’s new Voice Toolbar so you can effortlessly type without needing access to the full keyboard on your Pixel phone.

Now, you can personalise your Pixel’s modes to adapt to your life. You can easily activate your modes by swiping down from the top of your screen and exploring customizations for situations like Driving, Bedtime and Do Not Disturb.

New Features for Pixel Watch

Google, earlier last year, debuted a first-of-its-kind feature on the Pixel Watch 3 called Loss of Pulse detection. The feature recently received U.S. FDA clearance, allowing Google to expand this feature to people in the U.S. beginning at the end of this month.

Next, Pixel Watch 3 has added on-device menstrual tracking so you can conveniently log periods, view cycle status or predict your next period in the Fitbit app straight from your wrist.

Your Pixel Watch now tracks your steps with greater precision and accuracy by better recognizing when you deviate from a typical walking pattern, like pushing a shopping cart or wheelchair, jogging with a stroller or hiking with poles. The improved algorithm ensures that not only are your steps accurately counted toward your daily goal, but that you’ll get reliable insights into your daily activities.

Auto-bedtime Mode (launched with Pixel Watch 3) is now expanding to Pixel Watch 2 to automatically detect when you fall asleep and turn off your watch face and disable notifications to minimize distractions. Auto-bedtime Mode helps conserve your battery overnight, so you don’t miss out on your valuable sleep tracking, and it senses when you wake up and turns Bedtime Mode off.

Now, if there are any recordings on your older phone or Pixel Watch, you can transfer them to your current Pixel phone and they’ll be transcribed automatically in the Recorder app.

Finally, you can now also manage your favorite audio content with new actions on Pixel Watch to fast forward and rewind, adjust playback speed or control playback queue.

The March 2025 Pixel Drop begins rolling out today for all supported Pixel devices and will continue over the next few weeks.
