Google is rolling out a new version for ChromeOS, dubbed ChromeOS 128 which brings a slew of new features, as well as improvements to Google’s OS for its Chromebooks. New features include Snap groups, privacy control reminders, OCR in camera app, and much more.
ChromeOS 128: What’s New?
ChromeOS 128 is now rolling out with Snap groups which allow you to group windows on ChromeOS. A snap group is formed when you pair two windows for a split-screen. You can bring the windows back together, resize them simultaneously, or move them both as a group.
Next, the update makes it easier for users to be aware of the states of the privacy controls and provide actionable reminders on the ChromeOS Apps settings page so that users have a smoother experience. To view the ChromeOS Apps settings page, one can head over to Settings >Apps > Manage your Apps, and select the desired app.
Next, from ChromeOS 128 onwards, Google will store aggregated vitals data for one-year retention to better track the progress over time. Vitals data includes Android App performance metrics, such as crash rate, and these metrics will help us improve Android app performance on ChromeOS devices.
Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is also being added in ChromeOS camera app, enabling text extraction from images captured in the ChromeOS Camera App by integrating an ML-powered text extraction service. ChromeOS 128 supports 77 languages; it also supports both horizontal and vertical detection.
This allows copying and searching text from images, speaking text from images by screen reader, and creating searchable PDFs from images. By default, text detection in Photo mode is disabled and can be enabled from Settings > Text detection in preview.
Magnifier following ChromeVox is also being added, and is designed for people who are blind or have low vision. When you read text aloud using ChromeVox, the screen magnifier now automatically follows the words, so you never lose your place.
ChromeOS 128 adds support for Auto Gain Control (AGC) which allows apps, such as video calling apps, to automatically optimize microphone volume for best audio quality. When auto gain control is enabled and in-use, a message appears in the quick settings panel to inform the user that the microphone gain slider is being overridden. AGC is enabled by default in ChromeOS 128.
For ChromeOS cellular-enabled devices, Google has made it easier to view, manage, and add Access Point Names (APNs). Finally, ChromeOS 128 significantly differentiates the visual look of pinned notifications from typical notifications to reflect their significant difference.
Krafton, the developer behind India’s popular battle royale game Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), has teamed up with Dolby Laboratories to enhance the game’s audio experience. As part of this collaboration, Dolby Atmos sound technology will be integrated into Arena and Team Death Match modes in BGMI.
This update aims to provide players with a more immersive and realistic audio experience, bringing richer, multi-dimensional sound effects that improve gameplay. With Dolby Atmos in BGMI, players can better sense the direction of footsteps, gunfire, and other in-game audio cues, making the overall gaming experience more engaging and dynamic.
Seddharth Merrotra, Head of Business Development at Krafton India, noted the importance of sound in mobile gaming while making the announcement. To make use of the feature, you should have a Dolby Atmos-supported smartphone, such as the Redmi Note 13 Pro+.
CMO of Xiaomi India Anuj Sharma, also commented on the development and said,“By integrating Dolby Atmos into BGMI on Redmi Note 13 Pro+ 5G, we’re bringing gamers closer to the action, making every moment more vivid and thrilling than ever before.”
Last year in March, PUBG Mobile also received a similar update. However, it was made available only to the Arena mode. “With Dolby Atmos, players will hear the battlefield come alive all around them with crystal clear detail. They will also be able to hear potentially game-changing sounds with pinpoint accuracy – like the movement of footsteps of an opponent creeping up on them. Together with vast soundscapes that completely immerse each player, Dolby Atmos will turn eachPUBG MOBILEmatch into a hyper-realistic gaming experience,” the company said at the time of announcement.

Nothing OS 3.0 for Nothing smartphones was first teased by CEO Carl Pei back in June, showcasing some of the upcoming features in the Android 15 skin update. Now, the features can be seen live in action, thanks to a new Nothing OS 3.0 leak that reveals the official screenshots of the new features and redesigned UI elements.
The team at Smartprix got their hands on the Closed Beta of Nothing OS 3.0 that was rolled out to Nothing Phone (2a) users on September 3, 2024. Nothing began registrations for the closed beta of Nothing OS 3.0 a couple of weeks back, and the update was pushed to those selected.
Smartprix seems to have gotten the update on their unit, which is the source of the Nothing OS 3.0 leak. The update is based on Android 15, Google’s upcoming major Android version. The changelog of the update, according to the leaked screenshots, is as follows:
What’s New?
Effortlessly tailor your shortcuts via the all-new Quick Settings.

Added option to reset home screen layout to Nothing’s default style with a tap on top-right button on customisation page.
Added support for auto-archive function to automatically free up storage space without removing apps or data from your device.
Set up partial screen sharing, so you can record just an App window rather than the entire screen.

The update is 1.82 GB in size, and the change log further claims that Nothing will continue to add new features soon. The screenshots show the new features in action, such as the new quick settings, new fingerprint animation, lock screen customisation, and much more.
Carl Pei teased the update by saying that Nothing OS 3.0 would roll out in September. This means the update can be expected to roll out by the end of this month. If not in September, it will arrive in October, when Google is also confirmed to release Android 15 for Pixel smartphones.
Google Pixel 9a with Tensor G4 chip under the hood has now been leaked, suggesting the A-series device will pack the same chip as the regular Pixel 9 series but with slight differences, including a downgraded modem. Here’s everything you need to know about the Pixel 9a’s latest leak.
According to an Android Authority report, which cites a source inside Google, the Google Pixel 9a—codenamed “tegu”—is coming with the Google Tensor G4 Processor that’s also used in the Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, and the 9 Pro Fold. However, the chip isn’t entirely the same as the Pixel 9 series, and the changes, as per the leak, are for the worse.
The outlet reports that the Pixel 9a features a modified version of the G4 chip compared to the Pixel 9 series. While the silicon dye within both chips is identical, the packaging is not. The standard G4 uses Fan-Out Panel Level Packaging (FOPLP) by Samsung, whereas the Pixel 9a’s version employs Integrated Package on Package (IPoP). Samsung notes that IPoP is thicker and generates more heat than FOPLP, but it is also less expensive, likely driving its use in the 9a.
Another major downgrade Pixel 9a’s Tensor G4 will sport over Pixel 9’s G4 is the modem. The Exynos Modem 5400 in Pixel 9’s Tensor G4 has features such as Satellite SOS and support for 5G 3GPP Rel. 17, along with better efficiency and overall performance than last year’s modem used in Pixel 8 series, which we also noted during our review of the Pixel 9. In contrast, Pixel 9a retains the same Modem 5300 used in the entire Pixel 8 series and users with Pixel 8 devices weren’t particularly happy with the network performance of the devices.
While a downgrade, it should help Google keep the price of the Pixel 9a in check. It would also help the brand maintain a notable difference between the Pixel 9a and the Pixel 9 so one doesn’t cannibalise the other. There’s a possibility that Google could introduce the Pixel 9a at a lower price than Pixel 8a.
A recent leak for the Pixel 9a suggests it will have a completely different design than last year’s 8a or even the Pixel 9 series. The cameras on the back could sit flush with the back panel in a pill-shaped module, with Google removing the camera bar for the first time since Pixel 6 series.
Instagram Stories has been a popular format on the social media App where users share what happens in their day-to-day life and what not. It’s even more popular than the app’s core feature, which is sharing photos as regular posts and to make Instagram Stories even more interactive, the company has added Comments support for them.
Shared via Threads, the official Instagram account announced the Comments feature for Stories which read, “You can now leave comments on friends’ Stories to show them some love.” Previously, replying to an Instagram Story would send a private message visible only to the person who posted it. With the new addition of the feature, all comments on the story will be visible to the public or the followers of the account who posted the story.
However, the Comments feature on Instagram Stories is limited: only users who follow the poster and are followed back by the poster can leave a comment. Comments on stories are temporary and last for up to 24 hours. Furthermore, users will also have the option to turn on/off comments for any Story they share (via The Verge).
Stories has received a great amount of attention from Instagram lately. Aside from that, Instagram recently added the ability to add Music to profiles along with another new feature where one could add up to 20 photos in a carousel post. Whether you’re sharing travel adventures, monthly recaps, or adorable pet moments, this updated limit of photos in a carousel post allows for more expressive storytelling.
It is important to note that a user is not restricted to hit the maximum of 20 items. One can create carousel posts with anywhere from 1 to 20 photos or videos, providing greater flexibility. Instagram’s new limit brings it closer to TikTok’s 35-item limit.
