Apple iPhone 16 Series Launch on September 9

0

Apple has sent out invitations, with the tagline “It’s Glowtime,” to its iPhone 16 series launch event on September 9. This is also the date they’re anticipated to announce other gadgets, including new Apple Watches and a new set of AirPods.

The invitations for the event were sent online, and the event is now also visible on Apple’s own website. The launch event for the iPhone 16 series will be held at the Steve Jobs Theatre at Apple Park. It will also be live-streamed as usual on Apple’s YouTube channel and via its own services, including Apple TV. The event is set to start at 10 a.m. PT, which converts to 10:30 p.m. IST.

iphone 16 series glowtime launch event

At the event, we’ll witness the launch of the iPhone 16 series, which is expected to consist of four models: the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and the 16 Pro Max. The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will have a redesigned camera module containing vertically stacked instead of the diagonal implementation in former models. Renders showcasing this design have already been leaked.

The two cameras will seemingly consist of two sensors, including the primary wide camera that provides a 1X and 2X zoom and a secondary ultra-wide camera for the .5X zoom out. The Pro models will have the same setup as last year, including a wide camera, an ultra-wide camera, and a telephoto camera.

However, the Pro model will have an upgraded 5x telephoto sensor we saw last year only on the 15 Pro Max. This sensor will be shared with the iPhone 16 Pro Max as well, and will essentially replace the 3X telephoto lens we saw in the iPhone 15 Pro. This telephoto lens will be a 12MP sensor with an f/2.8 aperture.

The devices will also have a new Capture button and the Dynamic Island. They’ll reportedly be powered by the Apple A18 Pro and the Apple 18 chips. The Pro models will get the ProMotion 120Hz panels, while the 16 and 16 Plus will retain the 60Hz displays. The devices will launch with iOS 18 out of the box, but likely without Apple Intelligence.

Apple Watch Series 10 and AirPods 4 are also expected to launch alongside the iPhone 16 series.

Moto G45 5G Review: Should You Buy it?

0

Motorola has been making budget smartphones for a while now and has been trying to innovate in the segment, too. With Moto G45 5G coming in at Rs 10,999, should you consider spending on this Motorola handset or should you explore other options? Find out for yourself in this detailed review of the Moto G45 5G.

Design & Display

Moto g45 5g review

Motorola gave the Moto G45 5G its classic design language with Pantone shades and a vegan leather back panel finish. The Viva Magenta shade has a vibrant look to it and is an eye-catcher. The frame is made of plastic with a matte finish.

Given its price, the G45 5 G feels quite good in the hand. It’s lightweight as well, and the rings around the camera add a touch of elegance. The buttons on the right side are tactile, while the fingerprint sensor-cum-power button works without any issues.

Motorola also includes a TPU case in the box, which is a welcome addition considering the aggressive price. The device is also IP52-rated, so it can withstand a few splashes. The stereo speakers on the device sound decent and offer a good amount of loudness.

Considering the handset’s price, we’d say the Moto G45 5G handles the design department well and doesn’t look ordinary by any means, especially in the Magenta shade.

The display is a 6.5-inch 120Hz panel with an of 1600 x 720 pixels, 240Hz touch sampling rate, Gorilla Glass 3 protection, and a punch-hole design for the selfie sensor.

Moto g45 5g display review

We didn’t expect it to be a high-end panel, and again, for what you are paying, the display is decent, but it doesn’t come without its downsides. The 120Hz is smooth, and the display is also responsive.

The panel’s colours and viewing angles are above average, but the brightness isn’t. In direct sunlight, you’ll need to shield the display to clearly see what’s on it. Moreover, there’s a slight ghosting effect, which you can notice while scrolling content.

Performance & Software

The device is powered by the Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 paired with 128GB storage that can be expanded up to 1TB. It comes in two variants: 4GB and 8 GB.

The company sent us the 8GB RAM variant for review, and regarding RAM management, we wouldn’t say we had any complaints. Performance-wise, during our review, the Moto G45 5G did well in keeping up with day-to-day tasks, such as navigation, scrolling through social media, etc.

It’s not meant for gaming, but it can handle casual titles such as Bullet Echo and Candy Crush without any hiccups.

We did face hiccups with the animations, where we often noticed stutters, such as while opening settings from the Quick Settings shade. In some cases, the opening animations also lagged, and these were noticeable.

Moto g45 5g software review

The device is feature-packed despite its low price. It offers a load of gestures, such as chopping twice for the flashlight, twisting your wrist twice for the camera, flipping to turn on DND, lifting to wake up the display, and more.

Moto g45 5g gestures

Double-to-wake-up and double-tap-to-sleep gestures are also present. However, lock screen customisation, as we see in Motorola series devices, is missing.

However, you do get plenty of other options, such as the ability to change fonts and wallpaper-based colours across the system and some preset themes. Features like a secure folder are also available to enhance the protection of sensitive data you might want to store on your device.

The device runs on the July 2024 security patch out of the box. It doesn’t come with a lot of preloaded bloatware, keeping the experience clean, which is, again, something to appreciate. You get pre-installed Moto apps, including Ready For, which is quite useful for those who want their phone and PC to stay in sync. It does have a Glance lock screen that can be disabled via Settings if you want to keep your lock screen minimal and clean.

The Moto G45 5 G’s connectivity performance during the review, including Wi-Fi, 5G, and Bluetooth, remained optimal. The device doesn’t support NFC, yet for some reason, the specs page on Motorola’s website and the handset’s Flipkart listing show that it does.

Battery life

The G45 5G packs a 5000mAh battery with 18W TurboPower fast wired charging. With a decently sized battery, the G45 5G won’t disappoint you with its backup time, as it can easily last a day’s worth of use.

The device consistently gave me a screen-on time of 7 hours or above with moderate usage patterns, such as browsing Chrome, some calling and texting on WhatsApp and Telegram, and scrolling Instagram Reels and X.

The device does take some time to charge, though. It can take up to 2 hours to go from an empty battery to a full charge.

Cameras

Moto g45 5g camera review

The device includes a dual camera setup on the back. The primary sensor is a 50MP f/1.8, and the second sensor is a 2MP f/2.4 macro lens.

The photos from the main sensor look good, with ample detailing and vivid colours. The dynamic range is average, and there’s some shutter lag, so you’ll have to keep the device as stationary as possible while shooting a photo.

Macro shot

The secondary macro sensor clicks below-average shots with inconsistent colours and mediocre detailing.

For portrait photos, the subject’s edge detection is hit or miss. It can often fail at edge detection, which means that portrait shots may not always look the best.

Under low-light conditions, the Moto G45 5G’s camera further fails. The photo begins to show noise and gets a green tint. The detailing is also not the best in such shots.

Under artificial lighting, the camera gets the detailing right, with vibrant colours. Selfies look quite good with a natural bokeh effect when is enabled. The detailing and skin tones are also handled well.

WhatsApp Testing AR Filters and Call Effects on iOS

0

WhatsApp began testing a new feature on Android about a month ago where it introduced AR Call effects and filters while video calling and a similar feature is now being made available to beta testers of WhatsApp on iOS. It is currently only available to a select number of beta testers.

The feature was spotted being rolled out by WABetaInfo in the latest WhatsApp beta for 24.17.10.74 update, which is available on TestFlight. With AR filters and call effects on Android and iOS, WhatsApp aims to bring a new level of personalisation and interactivity to video calls, making them more engaging and fun. A similar feature is already offered in other apps by Meta, such as Messenger video calls.

WhatsApp iOS Video call AR effects

With the addition of the feature, while a user is on a video call, they can browse through an array of dynamic facial filters. These filters, as per the report, “allow users to customise their appearance in real-time during video calls, modifying the overall colour tone of their video feed.”

In addition, WhatsApp has introduced a background editing tool, enabling users to either blur their background or replace them with one of the pre-set backgrounds provided by WhatsApp. Next, there’s also a new low-light mode toggle, which is designed to enhance visibility of the user in dimly lit environments.

Furthermore, the new touch-up mode acts as a subtle filter to smooth out skin imperfections and give users a more polished appearance on video calls. The AR feature for call effects and filters is available to select few beta testers who install the latest versions of WhatsApp beta for iOS from the TestFlight app. It will begin rolling out to more users over the coming weeks.

OnePlus Nord 4 5G Review: Settle for Metal

0

The OnePlus Nord 4 was launched last month and is in one of those sweet spots in the mid-range price segment that’s crowded with options trying to provide the most value for money. Priced starting at Rs 29,999, should you consider it over the Realme GT 6T or the iQOO Neo 9 Pro? Let’s have a look.

Design & Display

Nord 4 case

The OnePlus Nord 4 5G brings back a long-lost design language: metal. Giving you HTC One M8 vibes, the Nord 4 adopts a Metal unibody design, and depending on which colour you get, there are different looks. I personally went with the silver one with laser-cut stripes on the back because it looked the nicest one out of the trio. Black is for those who want a subtle look, while Green is for those who like that dual-tone look.

Silver is surely the flashiest of the three and best showcases the handset’s bold metal look. The striped pattern on the back doesn’t have a texture but is there purely for the looks, and it handles that well. Despite being all metal, the device didn’t feel hefty and is one of the most premium devices I have held recently.

Nord 4 side

A departure from the usual aluminium and glass design seen in smartphones nowadays is a welcome move. The buttons on the right feel tactile, while the alert slider on the left has an orange tint inside, which, again, looks excellent.

Oneplus nord 4 left spine
Oneplus nord 4 alert slider

The ordinary-looking camera modules have glass around them, which gives the phone that dual-tone finish. I’d say OnePlus surely made a smartphone that stands out amongst the crowd.

Nord 4 side case

OnePlus has included a case within the box, which has a matte finish on the sides and a transparent TPU back. The case also has a unique touch.

Apart from the design, the OnePlus Nord 4’s are also good. They are tight and used well across the whole system for that immersive and premium feel. The stereo speakers sound loud and are well-tuned. They don’t have a lot of bass, but considering the price point, I don’t have any complaints.

The front display sports a 6.74-inch 120Hz with a 1.5K of 2772 x 1240 pixels, 100% DCI-P3 support, HDR10+, and 2150 nits of peak brightness.

OnePlus Nord 4 display

Speaking of brightness first, you won’t be touching those peak brightness numbers often, but only till 1100 nits even in direct sunlight which is not the best but manageable. I found it challenging to read the screen in direct sunlight; it wasn’t as effortless as it is with the iQOO Neo 9 Pro in similar conditions. However, it was still acceptable.

You wouldn’t find anything else to complain about for the rest of the aspects. The display is sharp and reproduces punchy colours. Auto-brightness works as it should while the display stays at 120hz most of the time, even when the is set to Auto. It’s also responsive while gaming which is another advantage. The in-display fingerprint sensor is an optical one and is quick and accurate in detecting the fingerprint and unlocking the device.

Software & Performance

The OnePlus Nord 4 5G is powered by the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 paired with up to 12GB of LPDDR5x and 256GB of 4.0 RAM.

I bought the top-end model because I plan to use it for as long as I can, and I can tell I made the right decision. RAM management stays excellent, and the device is quick and responsive even when performing demanding tasks.

One might doubt the thermals because the device has an all-metal build, but there’s nothing to worry about. Yes, it does get warm at times when you are running tasks like Google Maps or playing heavy titles but never did it get uncomfortably hot.

Talking of gaming, you can expect to play titles like Call of Duty and BGMI at high graphics and get consistent frame rates, thanks to the quite capable Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 processor. The device didn’t throttle easily while playing such titles.

OnePlus nord 4 Oxygen OS

OxygenOS has come a long way since its inception, and today, it remains one of the smoothest skins out there. It did lose its identity in between, and I was the one to criticize it, but in Nord 4, I can say OxygenOS handles many things right. The animations are smooth, interruptive, and fluid. Not once did the OnePlus Nord 4 lag during my use, whether during heavier or lighter tasks. You can also set the opening and closing animation speed, which is set to medium by default but can be set to fast.

Nord 4 AI features

The Android skin also remains feature-packed to the core, including AI features like AI article summary, AI smart cutout, AI eraser, and AI audio summary. All these features worked well for the most part, especially the AI eraser, which has improved quite a lot since it was first introduced. The results don’t look unnatural or digitally manipulated like they did before.

Oneplus nord 4 customisation

In addition, you get the smart sidebar, a bunch of Always-on display styles, wallpaper-based theming, fingerprint animations, various fonts, a battery indicator style, a clock style, double-tap to wake or sleep, and much more.

The device comes pre-loaded with bloatware, which is, fortunately, easy to uninstall.

OnePlus says the device will receive updates for 6 years, wherein the device will get 4 major OS upgrades and only security patches for the remaining two years. This matches Samsung’s policy, which is one of the only brands providing 4 major OS upgrades.

Interestingly, this software policy is even longer than what OnePlus offers for its 12R, a smartphone one segment above Nord 4. Coming back to Nord 4, with how the device performs, I don’t doubt whether the device can last so long.

Oneplus Nord 4 Antenna bands

With a metal build, network reception is not a concern because the Nord 4 has loads of antenna bands, including the ones in the frame and the one that goes all around the display. It doesn’t have any issues handling a 5G network. and connections also work without any issues.

Battery & Charging

The 5500mAh battery cell inside the OnePlus Nord 4 5G is easily among the best we have reviewed recently. It’s on par with the competition and can easily last up to 2 days with minimal use. Even with heavy use, the Nord 4 can easily last 24 hours or more.

During my usage, including navigating, scrolling through social media, watching YouTube videos, making some calls, and browsing the web, the Nord 4 performed effortlessly. It delivered an impressive screen-on time of nearly 8 hours, which is excellent.

The Nord 4 has a bundled 100W charger that can charge the device from 20% to 100% in under 25 minutes, which is outstanding. A battery protection feature is also available, allowing you to restrict the charging to just 80% for better battery ageing.

Cameras

Oneplus nord 4 cameras

The OnePlus Nord 4 has a dual rear camera setup, which includes a 50-megapixel Sony LYT-600 f/1.8 primary shooter and an 8-megapixel Sony IMX355 f/2.2 ultra-wide angle lens. On the front, there is a 16MP f/2.4 camera sensor for selfies.

The camera app on the Nord 4 is good to use, and the shutter lag is minimal. Shots clicked outdoors are acceptable. The detailing in these shots could be better, but the colours are on point, and the dynamic range is decent, too.

Photos from the ultra-wide-angle sensor have a slight colour shift over regular shots. The detailing still needs some improvement, but the colours are natural with a cool hue. It’s not as good as you’d expect it to be, but it is usable if you don’t shoot a lot of photos.

OnePlus Nord 4 5G portrait

Portrait photos from the sensor are excellent, with high detailing and colour accuracy. The detection is also on point, and the bokeh effect feels natural. However, when shooting from the ultra-wide angle sensor, the edge detection can get a little messy.

Selfies from the 16MP sensor aren’t the best regarding skin tones and other colours, as these look faded. While the detailing is high, the photos from the front-facing sensor may not appeal to those who enjoy clicking selfies often.

Low-light shots are surprisingly well handled, but because of the shutter lag, the photos can often come out blurry, as seen in the above shot. It was clicked in near pitch-black conditions, so I’d say the result is average. Night shots have a decent dynamic range, but you cannot expect a lot of sharpness and detail in a photo clicked on in such conditions.

Photos under artificial lighting, similar to portrait photos, have a good amount of detailing and handle the colours very nicely.

Similar to other phones in the segment, when you give the sensor enough light, it performs amazingly. However, because of inconsistencies, camera enthusiasts may not find the Nord 4 a compelling option.

Redmi 14C: Everything We Know

0

Redmi is gearing up to launch a new entry-level handset outside India, called Redmi 14C. Successor to the Redmi 13C, the 14C is expected to boast of a new design along with an upgraded as well. Here’s everything we know about the 14C including its launch timeline.

Moto G45 5G Listing on Flipkart, Motorola Website Misleading: Here’s Why

0

Motorola has been consistently releasing new smartphones in India, and although such errors are unexpected from them, it appears the brand has provided misleading information on both their website and the Flipkart listing for their newly launched Moto G45 5G.

On Motorola’s own website, the specs page of the Moto G45 5G claims that it supports NFC, and so does the Flipkart listing of the device. However, because we have the Moto G45 5G with us, we can confirm that the handset doesn’t support NFC.

We have dropped a mail to Motorola regarding the error and we’ll be updating the story once we receive a reply from the brand. As we mentioned, we don’t expect Motorola to make such mistakes. Whatever the case may be, it should be rectified at the earliest, as such information is misleading for the end-consumer and could hamper the brand’s reputation going forward.

The Moto G45 5G launched in India on August 21 and will go on sale in the country from August 28. It is priced at Rs 10,999 for the 4GB + 128GB model and Rs 12,999 for the 8GB + 128GB trim.

Recently, OnePlus faced criticism for a similar mistake on their website related to the OnePlus 12R. The brand apologised and corrected the mistake on its website where it had to change the OnePlus 12R 256GB model storage version from UFS 4.0 to UFS 3.1. Not only that, but the company also offered a full refund to buyers who bought the said variant of the device.

Google Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro XL Users Can Now Install Android 15 Beta 4.2

Google began running the Android 15 beta a few months back and while the Pixel 9 series was expected to ship with Android 15, it unfortunately didn’t. However, Google has now added the two currently available Pixel 9 series handsets, the Pixel 9 and the 9 Pro XL, to the list of devices which support Android 15 Beta.

Android Beta for Pixel offers you a simple way to try pre-release versions of Android, and test drive the new features of the upcoming Android version. Android 15 Beta 4.2 was released last week as the final bug-fix update before the stable launch. OTA images of this update are now available for the Pixel 9 and the Pixel 9 Pro XL and you can install these via the Google’s Android Beta website, too.

The Android 15 Beta 4.2 is dedicated to bug fixes. The update fixed an issue where some devices were delayed in waking up, a gray transparent bar was appearing when using the camera, a camera issue that was causing low frame rates, an issue that was causing the UI to flicker, and more.

The OTA images haven’t been made available for the Pixel 9 Pro and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold as these two devices haven’t gone on sale yet. The Android 15 Beta with build number AP31.240617.015 comes with the August 2024 security patch. As this a beta build, you can expect some bugs across the system due to which we won’t recommend you to install it on your primary device.

However, if you want to have the latest Android version installed on your Pixel 9 series device, Google has now given you the option to do so. This is the first time Google hasn’t shipped its Pixel devices with the latest version of Android out of the box. The Pixel 9 series is promised to get 7 years of updates including feature drops.

Motorola is expected to soon debut a new G-series handset globally, dubbed Moto G55 5G. The new device has now been leaked in detail, including the design it will sport and the specifications it will come packed with. Here’s everything we know so far about the upcoming Moto G55 5G.

The Moto G55 5G leak comes from 91mobiles, according to which the device will have a design similar to other recently launched G-series device, dubbed Moto G45 5G. The G55 5G will have back panel that curves to form the camera module. The green shade of the device has been showed in the render, along with buttons on the right spine of the device. Aside from green, the device could be available in Grey and Purple colour options, too.

As for the specs of the G55, they seem similar to that of the Moto G64 5G which launched in India earlier this year. The Moto G55 5G could sport a 6.5-inch FHD+ LCD display with a punch-hole cutout and a 120Hz refresh rate. It could be powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 7025 octa-core Chipset paired with up to 12GB LPDDR4x RAM and up to 256GB UFS 2.2 storage. Connectivity options should include 5G, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth v5.3, GPS, 3.5mm headphone jack and a USB Type-C port for charging. There will also be a side-mounted fingerprint sensor for Biometrics along with Dolby Atmos powered stereo speakers. The handset could also be IP52 rated.
