Phone Number Porting Banned For 7 Days After You Swap Your SIM Card: TRAI

0

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has added a new amendment to the mobile number portability (MNP) regulations. This is the ninth new amendment since the inception of these regulations back in 2009, which says that if a user recently swapped their card, they won’t be able to transfer their phone number to a new carrier (also known as SIM porting) until seven days have passed since the SIM swap. What does this mean for you? Here are all the details.

What is SIM Porting?

“SIM porting” refers to the process of transferring your phone number from one mobile service provider to another. It involves deactivating your old SIM card and activating a new one with the new carrier while retaining your existing phone number. This process is often used when switching to a new mobile network while keeping the same number.

For instance, if you want to switch from Airtel to Reliance Jio as your network provider, you must port your SIM from Airtel to Jio. A user can perform the process only once in 3 months (90 days).

What is SIM Swap?

A SIM swap refers to the process of replacing your current SIM card with a new one. This might be done for various reasons, such as upgrading to a new SIM card with better features, replacing a lost or damaged SIM card, or changing to a SIM card that is compatible with a new phone or network. The process typically involves contacting your mobile service provider to request a new SIM card and then activating it once you receive it.

What is new rule by TRAI regarding SIM Porting?

The new rule by TRAI states that if a user requests a new physical SIM card from their operator due to damage, misplacement, or theft (SIM Swap), they will not be able to transfer their number to a new telecom operator (SIM Porting) for seven days. After the 7-day cooldown period, you’ll be able to switch to a new network in case you want to. Telecom service providers (TSPs) will not be able to generate a Unique Porting Code (UPC) if the subscriber’s SIM was swapped within the last 7 days.

Why did TRAI introduce such a rule?

TRAI says that the rule has been implemented to keep the subscribers safe from fraud and spams. Moreover, it acts as a security measure to prevent unauthorised transfers of phone numbers. This rule would help users stay safe in an era where the number of scams taking place is on the rise.

In a release, TRAI said, “These amendment regulations are aimed at curbing the practice of porting of mobile numbers by way of fraudulent SIM swap or replacement by unscrupulous elements. Through these amendment regulations, an additional criterion for rejection of the request for allocation of UPC has been introduced”.

18 OTT Platforms blocked in India for Hosting Vulgar Content

The Indian government has blocked 18 over-the-top (OTT) platforms in a crackdown on services accused of streaming obscene and vulgar material. The content in question included sexual innuendos and, in some cases, extended scenes of pornographic and sexually explicit material without any thematic or societal relevance.

Why was the decision made and which platforms were banned?

This decision was made under the provisions of the Information Technology Act of 2000, following consultations with various ministries, departments, and domain experts in media, entertainment, women’s rights, and child rights.

The 18 platforms that were blocked include services such as:

  • Dreams Films
  • Voovi
  • Yessma
  • Uncut Adda
  • Tri Flicks
  • X Prime
  • Neon X VIP
  • Besharams
  • Hunters
  • Rabbit
  • Xtramood
  • Nuefliks
  • MoodX
  • Mojflix
  • Hot Shots VIP
  • Fugi
  • Chikooflix
  • Prime Play

These platforms have been found to portray women in a demeaning manner and depict nudity and sexual acts in inappropriate contexts. Moreover, notices were issued to these platforms in the last week of October 2023 regarding violation of the IT Rules, 2021 and other laws as well.

This included the likes of Section 67 (publishing or transmitting obscene material) and 67A (publishing or transmitting of material containing sexually explicit act) of the IT Act, 2000. Then, the platforms were given five days to ensure compliance which they failed to do so. The notices were part of a broader initiative to address the rising number of complaints regarding vulgar content on digital platforms.

The Ministry’s latest statement highlighted that these platforms extensively used social media to disseminate trailers, specific scenes, and external links aimed at attracting audiences to their websites and apps.

As a result, in addition to the OTT platforms, the government also disabled 19 websites, 10 apps, and 57 social media accounts associated with these services. One of the blocked apps had over one crore downloads, while two others had over 50 lakh downloads, indicating their significant viewership.

How is this different from content shown on Netflix and other services?

The situation with Netflix and other OTT platforms like SonyLIV or Prime Video in India is different from the other OTT platforms that have been banned. Firstly, Netflix and similar platforms offer an option for users to watch uncensored content only by confirming that their age is above 18 years. This approach aligns with the regulations that allow adults to view such content while protecting younger audiences.

Secondly and most importantly, Netflix and other platforms are known to remove or edit content in their Indian catalogue that may not comply with local laws or sensitivities. In contrast, the banned platforms failed to meet the demands of the government in accordance with the country’s laws.

Paytm to offer UPI, inspite of shutting down of Paytm Bank: What Does It Mean?

0

One97 Communications Ltd (OCL), the parent company of Paytm, has been granted approval by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to operate as a Third-Party Application Provider (TPAP) in the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) ecosystem. This enables Paytm to continue functioning within the UPI system despite the closure of its Payments Bank.

What happened to Paytm in the past?

This development comes on the heels of the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) directive to halt most operations of Paytm Payments Bank due to persistent non-compliance issues. The RBI directed Paytm Payments Bank to suspend its primary banking services, leading to unrest among its users.

After March 15, 2024, you cannot deposit money into your account with Paytm Payments Bank. No credits or deposits other than interest, cashbacks, sweep-in from partner banks or refunds are allowed to be credited.

What is Third-party Application Provider?

Third-party application Provider, also called TPAP, is a service that works with banks to help you use UPI, which is a system for sending money quickly and easily in India. TPAPs make apps that let you do things like pay bills, buy things, or send money to friends. They’re essential because they make it easier for everyone to use digital payments. Think of TPAPs as the bridge between your bank’s app and the UPI system, helping you get things done without going to the bank. For instance, apps like PhonePe and Google Pay act as TPAP, and now, Paytm will be one too.

The approval for TPAP status ensures that Paytm can continue to offer UPI payment services seamlessly. As a TPAP, Paytm will now be able to provide UPI-compliant applications to end-users, facilitating a range of payment transactions. This includes mobile wallets, merchant apps, and other platforms utilizing UPI for payments.

Till now, Paytm’s UPI transactions were earlier being carried out through Paytm Payments Bank which has now been shut down. Four major banks—Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, State Bank of India, and YES Bank—have been designated as Payment System Provider (PSP) banks for OCL. Notably, YES Bank will also take on the role of merchant acquiring bank for existing and new UPI merchants associated with Paytm. In other words, for people using Paytm, nothing much will change. They can still send money and pay for things like before.

What happens to those with an ‘@paytm’ UPI handle?

The “@Paytm” UPI handle was being handled by the Paytm Payments Bank. However, the handle will now be redirected to YES Bank, ensuring that existing users and merchants can continue their UPI transactions and AutoPay mandates without interruption. OCL has also been advised to expedite the migration of all existing handles and mandates to the new PSP banks.

This approval is a significant relief for Paytm, which faced operational uncertainties following the RBI’s crackdown. It’ll also reinstate consumers’ confidence in the platform knowing they can still use the service for their daily transactions without any interruptions.

Asus Zenfone 11 Ultra: Should You Consider It Over ROG Phone 8?

0

Asus has launched a new smartphone under its Zenfone lineup, and it is the Zenfone 11 Ultra. The new Zenfone 11 Ultra comes with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip and seemingly replaces the smaller Zenfone, which used to have the compact flagship title in the industry. However, the new Ultra device from Asus looks highly similar to one of its other smartphones, the ROG Phone 8. Which one should you consider and why? Let’s help you decide.

Asus Zenfone 11 Ultra: Price, Specs

The ASUS Zenfone 11 Ultra costs EUR 999 (approximately Rs 90,100) for the base 12GB + 256GB variant and EUR 1,099 (approximately Rs 99,100) for the top-end 16GB + 512GB configuration. The smartphone is available in Skyline Blue, Eternal Black, Misty Grey, and Desert Sand colour options.

The Zenfone 11 Ultra sports a 6.78-inch (2400×1080 pixels) Full HD+ 1-120Hz LTPO (max 144Hz for gaming) Samsung flexible AMOLED panel with 10-bit HDR, 20:9 aspect ratio, up to 2500 nits brightness, 107.37% DCI-P3 / 145.65% sRGB / 103.16% NTSC, and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection. It also has an in-display fingerprint sensor for biometrics.

It is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Chipset under the hood, paired with up to 16GB LPDDR5x RAM and up to 256GB UFS 4.0 storage. It runs on ROG UI based on Android 14. As for optics, the handset gets a 50MP rear camera with a 1/1.56″ Sony IMX890 sensor, f/1.9 aperture, 6-axis Gimbal stabilisation, paired with a 13MP f/2.2 ultra-wide camera and a 32MP f/2.4 3x telephoto sensor with OIS. At the front, there’s a 32MP camera sensor for selfies.

Additionally, the phone packs a multi-magnet stereo speaker setup with Qualcomm aptX adaptive audio, Dirac Virtuo for spatial sound. The device is also IP68 rated. It further packs a 5500mAh battery with 65W fast wired charging support and 15W wireless charging support. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth v5.4, NFC, GPS, 3.5mm and a USB-C port.

Asus Zenfone 11 Ultra Vs. ROG Phone 8

Rog phone 8 series debuts

If you look at it closely, the Zenfone 11 is basically the ROG Phone 8 with a few omitted features and a redesigned back panel. The geometric pattern rear design and colours are more suited for the masses, minus the illuminated ROG logo on the back, which the ROG Phone 8 houses.

Aside from that, while most of the specs remain the same, there are some hardware omissions in Zenfone 11 Ultra, such as the shoulder triggers, the side USB-C port, a 165Hz display and the rear display, which makes the Zenfone different from the ROG Phone 8.

The primary question we are here to answer is whether you should consider the Zenfone 11 Ultra over the ROG Phone 8. In Europe, the pricing for the ROG Phone 8 starts at EUR 1,099 (approx Rs 99,000), while the ROG Phone 8 Pro is EUR 1,199 (approx Rs 1,08,000). The EUR 99 difference gives you a decent amount of hardware additions in the ROG Phone 8, making it a better value. However, if a design concerns you the most and you want a flashy colour, you may consider the Zenfone 11 Ultra.
