Gaming for Good – Charitable Initiatives Making an Impact in the Gaming Community

The global gaming community has demonstrated an inspiring capability to extend its reach
beyond mere entertainment, utilising its influence for noble causes and charitable initiatives.
From fundraising campaigns to philanthropic events, various gaming community efforts strive to positively impact society, proving that gaming isn’t just about entertainment – it’s a force for social good.

Amidst the diverse world of charitable endeavours within the gaming community, we spotlight the innovative ways in which online rummy, a popular card game, is being utilised to bring positive change. Let’s discuss some of these initiatives and explore how they use gaming to bring about meaningful change.

Charitable Events and Fundraising Campaigns

Charitable events and fundraising campaigns are increasingly prevalent in the gaming
community as gamers and platforms unite to champion various causes. A prominent example is the trend of charity livestreams, where gamers broadcast their gameplay on platforms like Twitch and YouTube, urging viewers to donate to charitable organisations. These streams often feature popular games such as Fortnite, Minecraft, and Among Us, drawing a large audience and generating significant funds for charity.
Extra Life stands out as a notable initiative in the gaming community. Established in 2008, it encourages gamers to engage in a 24-hour gaming marathon to raise funds for Children’s
Miracle Network Hospitals. Participants create fundraising pages and seek donations from
friends, family, and online communities. Extra Life has raised millions of dollars for children’s hospitals since its inception, highlighting the generosity and compassion of gamers globally.

Esports for charity has also emerged as a significant development, with competitive gaming
tournaments organised to support nonprofit organisations. Events like GuardianCon and
Gamers Outreach Charity Stream have raised millions for charities aiding veterans, children’s hospitals, and disaster relief. These events not only showcase the talent of esports athletes but also underscore the gaming community’s generosity and philanthropy.
The St. Jude PLAY LIVE campaign is another notable example, encouraging gamers to raise
funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Participants create fundraising pages and
mobilise their communities to support the cause. Through gaming marathons, charity streams, and innovative initiatives, gamers have contributed millions of dollars to St. Jude over the years.

Utilising Gaming for Social Good

Apart from fundraising campaigns, various organisations actively use gaming as a tool for social good and humanitarian causes. One such organisation is Games for Change, a nonprofit dedicated to utilising the power of games for social impact. Games for Change collaborates with game developers, educators, and policymakers to create games that address critical issues such as poverty, inequality, and environmental sustainability.

In addition to creating impactful games, Games for Change hosts events and initiatives to raise awareness about social issues and promote positive change. For example, the annual Games for Change Festival brings together game developers, activists, and scholars to discuss the role of games in addressing societal challenges. Through these efforts, Games for Change aims to use the creative potential of gaming to inspire empathy, foster dialogue, and drive social change.

Challenges Faced by Charitable Initiatives in the Gaming Community

Charitable initiatives in the gaming community face numerous challenges, including scepticism and criticism. These challenges include doubts about the sincerity of gaming for good efforts, concerns about transparency and accountability, and the need for more transparency regarding allocating and utilising funds.

Scepticism comes as a challenge against widespread acceptance and support for the sustainability of these initiatives, while transparency raises concerns about the accountability of charitable gaming initiatives.

Addressing these challenges requires a multifaceted approach, including clear communication channels to articulate genuine intentions, proactive measures to ensure transparency in financial operations, and emphasising the tangible impact of these initiatives through concrete outcomes and success stories. By confronting these challenges head-on, the gaming community can strengthen its commitment to philanthropy and create a future where charitable initiatives can make a tangible difference.

Opportunities for Expanding the Impact of Gaming for Good

Despite the challenges, the future of gaming for good is bright. The gaming community is
utilising new technologies to extend the impact of charitable gaming initiatives, including through the development of innovative platforms like the rummy app. Virtual reality provides immersive experiences for educational purposes and therapeutic interventions, transforming learning environments and improving mental health interventions.

Collaborative efforts between the gaming industry and nonprofit organisations can combine resources and expertise to address social issues and bring about meaningful change.
Initiatives such as fundraising events and in-game charity drives can rally gamers and direct their enthusiasm towards philanthropic activities. The gaming community’s storytelling capability can amplify marginalised groups’ voices and advocate for social justice causes. By seizing these opportunities and using the collective influence of gamers, the future of gaming for good is poised to lead towards a brighter, more inclusive future.

Conclusion

In conclusion, gaming for good has become an effective force for positive change, with
charitable initiatives and fundraising campaigns significantly impacting the gaming community.

Apple Faces Antitrust Lawsuit: What Is It About?

0

The tech giant Apple has been hit with an antitrust lawsuit by the United States Department of Justice. The lawsuit is a result of the company’s business practices, specifically focusing on the App Store and its wider technology ecosystem. According to the lawsuit, Apple’s “Walled Garden” creates a monopolistic environment in the smartphone industry, which leads users to make decisions that benefit Apple.

The Allegations

The lawsuit alleges that Apple has engaged in monopolistic practices that stifle competition and innovation. Critics argue that Apple’s “walled garden” approach—wherein it controls every aspect of the ecosystem, from hardware to software—has to restrictive app store terms and excessively high fees. The Department of Justice (DOJ) claims that Apple’s actions have resulted in higher prices for consumers, excessive costs for developers, and hindered technological progress.

”Apple exercises its monopoly power to extract more money from consumers, developers, content creators, artists, publishers, small businesses, and merchants, among others,” the DOJ said.

Specific Accusations

The DOJ’s 88-page lawsuit outlines several specific unfair tactics used by Apple to maintain its market dominance. These include:

  • Blocking “Super Apps” that could facilitate easier switching between smartphone platforms.
  • Effectively banning cloud streaming services for content like games.
  • Degrading the experience for cross-platform apps, such as between and iOS operating systems.
  • Restricting compatibility of non-Apple smartwatches with iPhones and making it difficult for Apple Watch users to switch to another OS.
  • Preventing third-party developers from accessing the iPhone’s tap-to-pay feature.

“For years, Apple responded to competitive threats by imposing a series of ‘Whac-A-Mole’ contractual rules and restrictions that have allowed Apple to extract higher prices from consumers, impose higher fees on developers and creators, and to throttle competitive alternatives from rival technologies,” DOJ Antitrust Division Chief Jonathan Kanter said in a statement.

Apple’s Response

Apple has responded to allegations of wrongdoing by stating that it is “wrong on facts.” The company claims that it innovates every day to create technology that people love, which includes designing products that work seamlessly together, protect people’s privacy and security, and provide a magical experience for users.

Apple believes that this lawsuit would threaten who they are as a company and the principles that set their products apart in competitive markets. If successful, it could hinder their ability to create the kind of technology that people expect from Apple. Furthermore, it would set a dangerous precedent, giving the government too much power in designing people’s technology. Apple spokesperson Fred Sainz stated that they will vigorously defend against the lawsuit, as they believe it is wrong on both the facts and the law.

‘The Verge’ reports that Apple also held a background briefing with several news outlets on Thursday where it said that the company plans to dismiss the case. According to the publication, Apple also disagrees with the market that is being defined in the case, suggesting it should consider the global market and not just specifically the US.

Implications

While the case has been filed against Apple, it does pose broader implications for the rest of the market, about the future of competition and innovation in the tech industry. Moreover, adding further fuel to the fire are complaints from companies like Epic Games and Spotify, which have always been against Apple’s App store policies regarding the high fee charge on in-app purchases along with the inability to use any third-party payment methods.

The EU recently made Apple change its stance in the region by forcing it to comply with the DMA. Due to the threat the brand faced in case of non-compliance, it announced that developers in the region will have new options for app distribution and payment processing. In other words, it had to make the exact changes in the region which the DOJ is now asking Apple to make in the US as well. For instance, DMA made Apple open up the NFC chip on iPhones to third-party developers, allowing them to offer tap-to-pay functionalities without relying on Apple Pay.

The outcome of this lawsuit could set a precedent for how tech giants operate and are regulated. Further, it could potentially lead to more consumer choice, lower prices, and a more dynamic marketplace.

Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 Vs. Snapdragon 7 Gen 3: A Huge Upgrade Or a Small One?

0

Qualcomm has unveiled a new chipset post the launch of the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3. The newer chip is dubbed as the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 and is a premium mid-range that boasts some features also seen in the chipmaker’s top-end processor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. However, how does it compare to the 4 months old Snapdragon 7 Gen 3? Let’s have a look.

CPU

The new processor from Qualcomm, Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3, gets the same prime core as the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 and the 8 Gen 3, and that’s the Cortex-X4 but with a clock speed of 2.8Ghz which is lesser than the 8 series processors. In addition, it gets 4x Cortex-A720 cores clocked up to 2.6GHz, and 3x Cortex-A520 cores clocked up to 1.9GHz.

On the other hand, the 7 Gen 3 doesn’t even have a prime core. It gets small and medium cores only, including a single Cortex-A715 performance core clocked at up to 2.63GHz, 3x Cortex-A715 cores clocked at 2.4GHz, and 4x Cortex-A510 cores clocked up to 1.8GHz. Note that it has four A715 cores but one of them has a higher clock speed than the other three.

The good news is that both of them are built on top of TSMC’s 4nm process which means either of them shouldn’t face any issues in terms of efficiency. However, power-wise, the SD 7+ Gen 3 is far more powerful than the 7 Gen 3.

GPU

The Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 gets a brand new Adreno that’s 45% more powerful than the one found in the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 as per Qualcomm’s stats. In addition, the 7+ Gen 3 GPU gets some Elite Gaming features also, which have been restricted to the Snapdragon 8 series processors until now. These include Snapdragon Game Super Resolution, Adreno Frame Motion Engine 2.0 (AFME), Game Post Processing Accelerator, HDR gaming, and Shadow Denoiser.

On the other hand, the 7 Gen 3 gets the Adreno 720 GPU which is actually inferior even when compared to the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2. As a result, the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 wins in the GPU segment as well, with one of the most powerful GPUs ever been made available in a Snapdragon 7-series processor.

Storage & versions

The SD 7+ Gen 3 gets you support for the latest LPDDR5x RAM and 4.0 storage, same as the flagship 8 series processors. The 7 Gen 3 has LPDDR5 support for RAM and UFS 3.1 for storage, which isn’t bad, but is again less impressive than what we have for the 7+ Gen 3.

Connectivity

Connectivity-wise, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 from last year and the latest 7+ Gen 3, both have the Snapdragon X63 modem. Interestingly, Qualcomm claims that the in the 7+ Gen 3 can achieve a maximum download speed of 4.2 Gbps, while the modem in 7 Gen 3 can reach up to 5 Gbps. While both of them won’t pose any issues, it’s strange to see Qualcomm downgrade in an aspect compared to the previous chip.

As for other hardware, the SD 7+ Gen 3 chip has the FastConnect 7800 system which is also found in SD 8 Gen 3. It’s equipped with support for 7 with High Simultaneous (HBS) Multi-Link support and offers a peak speed of up to 5.8 Gbps. The chipset also supports v5.4, and LE Audio. The 7 Gen 3 gets a generation old FastConnect 6900 system, which offers Wi-Fi 6E with speeds of up to 3.6 Gbps, along with Bluetooth v5.3 and LE Audio.

ISP

Now, we come to the Image Signal Processor which is responsible for handling the optics of a smartphone. The ISP on the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 is actually quite identical to that of the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3. It gets triple 18-bit ISPs and supports features like real-time semantic segmentation for both photos and videos (up to 12 layers), support for all types of HDR image sensors, Google Ultra HDR photo capture, Dolby Vision shooting format, AI-powered video shooting features and much more. Besides, it capture photos up to 200 MP, and record HDR videos at 60 FPS. There is also support for Bokeh Engine 2.0 for videos along with Snapdragon Low Light Vision (LLV).

The triple 12-bit ISPs of the 7 Gen 3 can also capture photos up to 200MP, and record 4K HDR videos at 60 FPS. However, it only gets support for the older Bokeh Engine 1.0 for videos.

The newer ISP with better features and upgraded hardware definitely help the 7+ Gen 3 in becoming the best 7 series chipset in terms of optics.

NPU

Finally, NPU is where the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 shines even more. It packs the Hexagon NPU which can now run models locally on the device itself. Smaller AI models such as Baichuan-7B, Llama 2, and Gemini Nano are all supported, similar to the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3. On the other hand, the

7 Gen 3 also has the Hegaxon Engine but its not powerful enough to support on-device generative AI capabilities.

Verdict

The Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 is one beast of a chip according to its on-paper specs. It gets all the things right and is fairly more powerful and capable than the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3, making it a significant upgrade. The OnePlus Ace 3V is the first smartphone to be powered by the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 and we expect more brands to follow. The chipset should make an appearance in sub-Rs 35,000 segment in India.

Boult Products Are Better In Quality Than BoAt, Noise: Varun Gupta

0

The earbuds and smartwatch segments are gaining immense traction in India, especially due to the Make in India push. Additionally, this segment is dominated by Indian brands that have recently started promoting India as a manufacturing hub. Boult Audio, which ranks in India’s top 3 hearables brands, claims to be better than Noise and BoAt.

Why is Boult better than Noise and BoAt?

”Our products have over 3 million ratings on e-commerce platforms like Amazon and Flipkart, which is a first for a brand in this segment. Moreover, our average rating score is above 4 stars, which itself speaks for the superior quality of our products”, said Varun Gupta, CEO and Founder, Boult Audio to The Mobile Indian.

Gupta further added, “The quality of our products is better than that of Noise and BoAt.”

According to the February 2024 IDC report, Boult Audio is the second-largest player in the TWS wearables category, just below BoAt in terms of market share.

Gupta also said to improve teh quality and experience of Boult products the company is working on bringing to audio products to access the AI assistant with a tap on the earbud.

Reason Behind Boult’s Success

Gupta attributes the brand’s success to its consistent support for the Make in India initiative over the past six and a half years. He claims by doing so, the brand has been able to conduct in-house research and development, which helps it better cater to the needs of Indian consumers. He added, ” Boult has its own team of industrial designers, allowing them to create unique product designs. Their aim is to develop products that resonate with Indian consumers, inspiring them to choose Boult over competitors.”

Boult doesn’t get involved in private labelling practices like selling a product from a Chinese supplier under its own name, clarified Gupta. It works with its teams to make high-quality products for consumers.

Plans for International Expansion

Boult Audio also harbours international aspirations as well as they are already selling products in one European country and one Asian. Gupta said, “We are not just eyeing the International market for expansion; rather, we are also focussing on Make from India for the same.”

He said, “Even when we expand to other regions, every product will be designed and developed in India and will then be shipped to other regions.”

Boult Smartwatches: What is different?

Gupta is of the opinion that many brands in India do not work on the hardware quality of the watch, such as the quality of the Sensors being used, due to which there’s a big gap in the accuracy of the data that’s being measured through the consumer’s wrist.

He further added, “Apart from hardware, they also do not work on software, which is vital for such a product because that needs to be perfectly in sync with the hardware to give accurate readings on the vitals”.

“We deliberately entered the smartwatch market later than our competitors, in late 2022, so that we could identify the gaps that other brands had overlooked and create a product that would not disappoint our customers,” said Gupta.

Talking about future plans, Gupta said that Boult’s upcoming smartwatches will feature AI capabilities, allowing users to interact with AI directly from their wrist.

Partnership with other brands for bundle offers

Boult Audio is planning to collaborate with brands outside its own category, such as laptop manufacturers, to offer its TWS earbuds as part of a bundle deal with laptops from those brands. Gupta hinted that there will be some significant announcements in May that will be of interest to consumers.

Vivo T3 5G Launched In India: Should You Buy It?

Vivo T3 5G: Competitors

The Vivo T3 5G is competing with the iQOO Z9 5G despite being a highly similar phone. The differences between the two include a flicker sensor on Vivo’s device which iQOO’s Z9 lacks and a refreshed design. Aside from that, it is basically the same phone as iQOO Z9 at the same price point as well.

Aside from that, Vivo T3 5G is going against the Realme Narzo 70 Pro 5G which offers you a slightly better display which is brighter, faster charging speeds, an ultra-wide angle camera on the back, but gets an inferior Dimensity 7050 chipset. The Narzo 70 Pro 5G starts at the same price as Vivo T3 5G, and that is Rs 19,999.

There’s also the Lava Blaze Curve 5G which is priced lower at Rs 17,999 and lacks in the software and department. However, it gets you a curved display, faster and larger amount of RAM and storage for a cheaper price, along with an ultra-wide angle sensor on the back.

Considering the specs of the device, the Vivo T3 5G looks like a decent offering but you do have other options in the segment and some even cheaper which offer you a similar value. The decision whether to buy it or not boils down to your preferences, where you want raw power, or a better display that may also be curved and could be brighter, or maybe faster charging and an ultra-wide angle camera sensor on the back.
