Is Google covertly Glorifying Pixel 9? Team Pixel Program Under Scrutiny

0

In recent developments, Google has come under scrutiny for allegedly encouraging reviewers to provide overly positive feedback on its newly announced Pixel 9 smartphone through its Team Pixel program. This program, which has been a cornerstone of Google’s marketing strategy, involves sending devices to influencers and tech reviewers in exchange for coverage.

Screenshots of the recent Team Pixel program recruitment survey have been spreading on X, suggesting that Google has been subtly pressuring members of the Team Pixel program to highlight the Pixel 9’s strengths while downplaying any potential shortcomings.

This has raised concerns about the authenticity of reviews and the ethical implications of such practices. One of the screenshots shared by X user Mark’s Tech shows a question from the Team Pixel program survey: “By opting into this program, do you acknowledge that you are expected to feature the Google Pixel device in place of any competitor mobile devices? Please note that if it appears other brands are being preferred over the Pixel, we will need to cease the relationship between the brand and the creator.”

Tech creators, such as MKBHD, took to X to express their views on the matter. Arun Maini, popularly known as MrWhoseTheBoss on YouTube, also shared on X that his critical opinion of last-gen Pixel devices is the reason Google hasn’t sent him a review unit of the new Pixel 9 series phones this year.

Critics further argue that such practices could mislead consumers who rely on unbiased reviews to make informed purchasing decisions.

What is Team Pixel?

Google isn’t solely responsible for such a move, as its Team Pixel program is run by a PR agency named 1000Heads. For context, the initial idea behind Team Pixel was to collaborate with content creators with moderate to large audiences and utilize social media platforms to boost the adoption and sales of Pixel phones. It is run only in the US for creators based in the region.

X user Max Weinbach shared screenshots of emails sent to members of the Team Pixel program when it started in 2019, highlighting how it used to work. The screenshots show that Google clearly asked creators to express their honest views and opinions about the device and always use hashtags like #GiftFromGoogle or #TeamPixel to denote they were a part of the program. Moreover, there was also no contract to sign.

However, recently, and based on the leaked screenshots, it seems like 1000Heads has adopted a new strategy of coercing creators and reviewers to praise the Pixel 9 in front of its competitors or else they’ll be kicked off the program.

Again, if true, these are poor and disappointing tactics from the agency that needs to be suspended at the earliest. This is where Google comes at fault, where it should have put a stop to it as soon as they were made aware of it.

As the tech community awaits further clarification from Google, the allegations surrounding the Team Pixel program serve as a reminder of the importance of transparency and integrity in product reviews. Being linked to paid reviews or similar tactics is one of the most damaging allegations a brand can face. Whether these claims hold water or not, they underscore the need for consumers to critically evaluate the sources of their information.

WhatsApp Chat Themes in Development for Android App

0

WhatsApp has been around for many years now but it lacks extensive customisation, as can be seen in competitor apps like Telegram. However, that should change soon, as WhatsApp has been spotted testing Chat themes for its app, allowing users to change the look of their per their liking.

As spotted by WABetaInfo in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.17.19 update, WhatsApp is testing a new section where users will be able to choose their favorite default chat theme. The feature isn’t live yet, even for beta users, and is scheduled for release in a future update. As the feature is still in development, a preview of the themes WhatsApp will include is not available yet.

WhatsApp Android chat themes

However, the feature tracker says that we can expect at least 10 chat themes to enrich the user experience. A similar chat themes feature was also spotted in WhatsApp for a few months back, which showed around 5 themes for both light and dark modes of the app. The feature will allow you to set a new default chat theme and it will be applied to all your conversations on WhatsApp. It’s possible WhatsApp may allow for chat-specific theming in the future as well.

With this customization option, users can select a new colour for their chat bubbles and wallpapers from various choices. Once selected, the colour will automatically apply as the default chat theme, adjusting both the wallpaper and bubble colour accordingly.

In addition, the feature tracker also notes that selecting a default chat theme will only affect your own interface and won’t alter the appearance of the chats for the user on the other end like how it does in Instagram chats. There’s no word on when the Chat themes feature will make its way to the stable version of WhatsApp Android app. However, one can expect it to arrive before the end of the year or early next year.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra May Ditch Galaxy Note-inspired Design

0

The Ultra models in the Samsung Galaxy S-series abandoned their original design language to adopt the Galaxy Note-inspired design language, beginning with the Galaxy S22 Ultra. However, the upcoming Galaxy S25 Ultra could finally ditch that design and go back to its roots, adopting the classic Galaxy S-series design that the Galaxy S20 Ultra and the Galaxy S21 Ultra had.

Leaked by tipster IceUniverse on X, the first rumoured render of the front of the Galaxy S25 Ultra shows that the device will adopt a more rounded design in place of the sharp corners we have seen in the Galaxy S22 Ultra, S23 Ultra, and this year’ S24 Ultra, too. A photo showing the S24 Ultra and the S25 Ultra side-by-side was also shared by the tipster, clearly highlighting how different the S25 Ultra’s design will look in comparison to the past three Ultra flagship models from Samsung.

Galaxy S24 Ultra (Left), Galaxy S25 Ultra (Right)

While the display will remain completely flat, identical to the S24 Ultra, it will have even slimmer bezels. The rounded corners aren’t as round as the S20 Ultra and the S21 Ultra, but they are still more curved than the last three Ultra flagships. Again, we’ll have to wait for a couple of more months for more high-quality leaked renders and, of course, until next year for the official reveal.

As for past leaks regarding the upcoming Galaxy S25 series, Samsung is expected to use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 in all three of the S25 series devices, once again departing from the dual-chip strategy it used in the Galaxy S24 series. Reports suggest it is likely due to Samsung’s inability to achieve the desired yield results with the 3nm node it uses to produce the Exynos 2500 processor.

Aside from that, the company itself confirmed that the series will get “top-of-the-line upgrades” in the camera and display departments specifically. Rumours also indicate the same for the Galaxy S25 Ultra, which could feature significant camera upgrades, including a 50MP 3x zoom and a 50MP ultra-wide lens (up from 10MP and 12MP, respectively, on the Galaxy S24 Ultra), aligning with the new 50MP 5x periscope.

Google Expands AI Overviews to India With Hindi Language Support

Google has announced the expansion of its AI Overviews to India and other countries after rolling it out in the US back in May. The AI overviews are integrated within Google Search and also bring some India-specific features, such as the ability to switch between English and Hindi results with the language toggle button.

Google had a setback with AI overviews in Search where it not only faced backlash from publishers across the globe, but also showed some odd and unfavourable results to users who made unique queries in Google search. Because of that, a report back in June stated that Google had to dial down the visibility of AI overviews search results by a whopping 84 percent.

However, it hasn’t stopped Google from working and refining the feature further. In the latest blog post, Google says that since AI overviews went live in the US, “people are asking longer questions, diving deeper into complex subjects and uncovering new perspectives — which means more opportunities for people to discover content from publishers, businesses and creators.”

Now, after extensive testing and positive feedback, including in the U.S. and in Search Labs globally, Google is “bringing the helpfulness of AI Overviews to six new countries: India, United Kingdom, Japan, Indonesia, Mexico and Brazil – along with local language support in each country.”

In India, Google is rolling out AI Overviews in English and Hindi and is also introducing popular India-first features that were well-received during its Search Labs experiment: helping you easily switch between English and Hindi results with the language toggle button, and listen to responses with Text-To-Speech by tapping the ‘Listen’ button.

Google reiterates that through testing in various markets, it has found that people prefer using Search with AI Overviews, and they find their search results more helpful. In fact, as part of the testing, Google saw that Indian users listen to AI Overviews responses more often than other countries.

Google is enhancing the connectivity of AI overviews with the Web, where it’s introducing more ways to check out relevant websites while you search, with a new right-hand link display for AI Overviews on desktop – also accessible on mobile by tapping the site icons on the upper right.

These updates are starting to roll out globally today for AI Overviews in all launched countries, as well as for Search Labs users in more than 120 countries and territories. “As we launch in these new countries, ads appearing above or below AI Overviews will continue to provide valuable options for people to take action and connect with businesses,” said Gogole.

The company adds that it is also currently testing the addition of links to relevant web pages directly within the text of AI Overviews (in addition to the prominent links it already shows), making it even easier for people to click out and visit sites that interest them.

Durability, Efficiency X Factor of Our Printers: Brother

Brother printers offer great value for money, giving them a competitive in India.

“Brother has prioritised durability, cost-efficiency, and superior specifications over the competition, which is why we are succeeding,” said Alok Nigam, Managing Director of Brother International India, to The Mobile Indian.

Nigam emphasised that these attributes have consistently set Brother apart, making the brand a preferred choice for consumers seeking reliable, high-performance printing solutions. He also noted the broad range of products in Brother India’s portfolio, catering to diverse customer needs—from home printing solutions to printers suitable for students and educational purposes.

Addressing a common concern in the Indian market, Nigam spoke about the high costs associated with printer cartridges, which often surpass the price of the printer itself, particularly for laser printers. He stressed Brother’s commitment to affordability, highlighting the introduction of a toner priced at Rs 940, capable of producing 2,600 pages. He pointed out that this represents a significant cost saving compared to other third-party solutions that can exceed Rs 4,000.

Nigam also underscored Brother’s dedication to customer convenience, citing the company’s on-site repair services. “Customers can easily schedule repairs from the comfort of their homes by contacting our customer service,” Nigam said. This approach, he added, ensures timely support without the inconvenience of visiting a service center, reflecting Brother’s focus on enhancing the overall user experience.

Brother India recently unveiled 17 new printers to strengthen its position in the competitive Indian market.

The newly launched lineup includes Mono and Color Printers that support wireless and connectivity, as well as integration with the Brother Mobile Connect App. These features enable users to manage documents more efficiently by sending them directly to mobile devices, tablets, or desktops.

The Toner Box Series is positioned as a cost-effective solution for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) requiring high-volume, quality printing. With its in-box toner, this series offers a 2,600-page yield, reducing printing costs to as low as 33 paise per page. It includes four multifunction printers and two single-function printers.

The Mono Laser Printer Series, designed for SMBs, large corporations, and government offices, offers high print speeds and automatic duplex printing to minimise paper usage. The series, which includes four printers and three multifunction centers, is equipped with a 3,000-page in-box toner and a 5,000-page supply toner, further reducing the cost per page and the need for frequent cartridge replacements.

Additionally, the Color Printer and Multifunction Printer series deliver vibrant colour outputs suitable for marketing and other business document needs. The compact and quiet printers offer the same print speeds for both and color documents, with two-sided printing capabilities to save paper. The series includes two single-function printers and two multifunction printers designed to meet the diverse needs of businesses with high-quality, cost-effective colour printing.
