In the aftermath of its “Made by Google” event, Google silently released a refreshed version of its Chromecast streaming dongle. The third generation of the WiFi-enabled streaming device with small updates over its predecessor which was released in 2015. The Google Chromecast 3 comes in at the same price of $35 (approx. Rs 2,600).
With a similar design to the Chromecast device of 2015, the new Google dongle is smaller as the puck looks distantly small hanging off the shorter HDMI cable. There’s no magnetic connector but the main device comes with a microUSB. The device is thicker probably due to the new elements on the inside and has a matte coating with Google’s ‘G’ logo on top.
The Chromecast 2018 comes in Charcoal and Chalk colours and offers the same resolution of that of its predecessor which is 1080p. Users interested in 4K streaming will still have to buy the more expensive Chromecast Ultra. However, Google has seeded the Chromecast 3 with the ability to stream 1080p content at 60fps, owing to the 15 percent improvement in hardware.
There’s an added Bluetooth connectivity, which allows room for functions like remote control and support for game controllers. The new Chromecast will allow users to stream from YouTube Music and Spotify right on their TVs or connected speakers. There’s a multiform audio feature which allows music to be played across select or all rooms around the house.
