Top Smartphone Brands Offering Maximum Android Updates: 7 to 1

0

Updates play a crucial role in the ecosystem as they help keep smartphones secure, fast, and feature-rich. However, not all Android devices receive equal support from their manufacturers. Some smartphone brands are more devoted than others to delivering timely and frequent updates to their phones. In this article, we will explore the top smartphone brands that offer the most Android updates.

7 years of Android updates

Google has set a new benchmark for Android OS updates and security patches by offering 7 years of support with its Google Pixel 8 series, which was launched last year. Samsung has followed suit with its Galaxy S24 series, which was launched earlier last month, also offering 7 years of OS upgrades and security patches. Currently, Samsung and Google are the only two brands offering 7 years of major Android updates.

4 years of Android OS updates

In the Android world, reaching the 4-year milestone for Android updates was a significant achievement till a few years back. Samsung accomplished this feat with the launch of its Galaxy S21 series. However, some smartphone brands still believe that offering updates for 4 years is the ideal period. These brands include OnePlus, Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo, and Samsung.

It’s worth noting that the above brands provide four years of operating system (OS) updates and five years of security patches for their top-of-the-line smartphones. Samsung offers the same security policy for its mid-range Galaxy A-series smartphones too. This policy applies to Samsung’s flagship smartphones launched in or before 2023.

3 years Android OS updates

In the past, Android phone users could expect major operating system updates for about 3 years after the phone’s release. However, today, brands such as iQOO have made it their top priority to offer this service for their flagship mid-range phones like the iQOO Neo 9 Pro and iQOO 12. Other brands, including Motorola, Honor, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Poco, and Redmi, also offer similar update policies for some of their flagship and mid-range devices.

2 years of Android OS updates

Several smartphone brands such as TECNO, Motorola, Asus, Nokia, Honor, OnePlus, Poco, Realme, Sony, and Xiaomi offer at least 2 years of Android operating system updates for their flagship devices. Some of these brands also have a similar policy for their lower-end devices. However, Sony and Asus offer this policy for their most high-end devices.

1 year of Android OS updates

Many budget smartphone brands, including Itel, Infinix, Motorola, Nokia, Realme, Redmi, Poco, and Xiaomi, provide one year of Android OS updates for their low-end devices that are priced under Rs 15,000 in India.

So this was the list that contained segmentation of Android smartphone brands that offer the most and least number of Android updates. You might be wondering why some brand names appear in two categories. Right? This is because they have different policies for devices across their portfolio. For example, OnePlus offers 4 years of OS updates for its OnePlus 12, but it offers a lesser number of updates for its mid-range devices. Android updates are essential for keeping your phone secure, fast, and up-to-date with the latest features. They can also extend the lifespan and resale value of your device.

Top Methods To Complete FASTag KYC Before February 29 Deadline

0

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced that the deadline for updating the Know Your Customer (KYC) details of FASTag users is February 29, 2024. However, there are various methods via which you can complete your FASTag KYC and here are the details about those with all the steps for your convenience.

FASTag is an electronic toll collection system that uses radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology to enable cashless payments at toll plazas across the country. According to the NHAI, FASTag users who fail to complete the KYC process by the deadline will face deactivation of their tags and will not be able to avail the benefits of the system. The KYC process is mandatory for all FASTag users as per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines.

What Is ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag Policy’?

The NHAI has also introduced the ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ policy to prevent the misuse of FASTag by using it for multiple vehicles or vice versa. The policy aims to improve the efficiency and transparency of toll collection and reduce traffic congestion and pollution.

According to the NHAI, FASTag users must comply with the One Vehicle, One FASTag policy and discard all the earlier issued FASTags through their respective banks. Only the latest FASTag account shall remain active, as previous tags will be deactivated or blacklisted after February 29, 2024.

The NHAI has taken this initiative after the recent reports of multiple FASTags being issued for a particular vehicle and FASTags being issued without KYC, violating RBI’s mandate. Apart from this, FASTags are sometimes deliberately not fixed on the vehicle’s windscreen, resulting in unnecessary delays at the toll plazas and causing inconvenience to fellow National Highway users.

What Are The Documents Required For KYC Completion?

The documents required for updating the KYC of FASTag are:

  • One of the following Officially Valid Documents (OVDs): Valid passport, driver’s license, voter ID, PAN card, Aadhaar card, or NREGA job card endorsed by a State Government official.
  • A copy of the vehicle’s registration certificate (RC).

HMD rebranding Plans unveiled, 50% of its phones launching in 2024 to be Repairable

HMD Global, known for its Nokia-branded phones, announced its rebranding strategy at the Barcelona Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 event. Contrary to the rumours and what we had reported earlier, HMD didn’t launch any smartphones at MWC.

Rebranding and New Direction

At the event, HMD Global announced that it will launch smartphones under its own HMD brand, which is a significant change from its exclusive focus on Nokia devices for the past seven years. This strategic move showcases HMD’s aim to provide a variety of devices that are both attractive and easy to repair.

The company aims to satisfy varying consumer preferences by adopting a multi-brand approach without compromising quality and reliability.

Barbie-Branded Flip Phone and Retro Feature Phone

HMD Global also made an unexpected announcement that they will be partnering with the well-known toy manufacturer Mattel to release a flip phone under the Barbie brand later this year. The company suggested that the phone will have a pink colour scheme to appeal to customers’ nostalgia for retro features. Additionally, HMD hinted at possibly bringing back another classic Nokia phone design.

HMD rebranding

Focus on Repairability

HMD Global aims to enhance repairability in its future devices in line with its statement made last year. Building on its partnership with repair specialists iFixit, the company intends to streamline the repair process and empower customers to fix their phones with a target of making half of its smartphone devices sold globally repairable by 2024.

Developer Toolkit Initiative

Furthermore, HMD Global announced the launch of a developer toolkit initiative, providing developers and businesses with open design files and software integration information. This initiative aims to foster collaboration and innovation within the developer community, enabling the creation of solutions that enhance the user experience.

HMD Global’s rebranding plans and strategic partnerships signal an attempt to try something different, which they have yet to try with Nokia. Only time will tell if it will succeed.

However, mastering different modes will take time, especially if you’re using the Gimbal for the first time. Also, the user interface, though completely loaded, needs some fine-tuning to improve usability and ease of operation. Maybe a software update can take care of it.

While using the Gimbal, we noticed some minor issues with the zoom button, where zooming skipped a few frames in some shots. Overall, we were satisfied with the product’s quality, and its feature set remains high.

Long-lasting Performance

With a rechargeable 3200mAh battery, you can enjoy up to 7 hours of uninterrupted use. However, the wireless charging feature was slow.

Gmail staying back, RIP Gmail for Slow internet

0

A supposed letter from Google began making rounds on X on February 22, Thursday, stating that the company is sunsetting Gmail. However, it holds no truth as Gmail is not going anywhere but the basic HTML version of it will be shut down. Google also confirmed the same via a post on X.

The letter was being shared across the social media platform, making people believe that Gmail is indeed shutting down, whereas it’s not. The formal language of the letter and Google’s reputation for killing off some of its best products lead people to believe the hoax. However, the X account of Gmail then posted on the platform itself that it is “here to stay”.

As to what is actually shutting down, is the basic HTML version of Gmail. The Basic HTML view was introduced as an alternative to the Standard view for users with slow internet connections or older browsers. However, at this point, the Basic HTML view is outdated. It does not support many of the modern functionalities of Gmail, such as chat, spell checker, keyboard shortcuts, custom “from” addresses, and rich formatting.

Those opting for older versions or operating systems or lacking sufficient to support the more intensive version will find the Standard view experience disappointing. Google confirmed the sunsetting of the HTML version back in September last year.

After the HTML view is disabled, users will be directed to the standard Gmail view. Google plans to provide users with an in-product announcement detailing how to switch to the standard view in the weeks leading up to removing the HTML view.

Sony Announces New Games For PS VR2, Confirms PC Support Under Development

Sony debuted the PlayStation VR2 (PS VR2) headset around a year ago and while it is designed to work exclusively with the PS5, that could soon change as Sony has confirmed it is working on PC support for the headset. Other than that, Sony also announced the new games lineup that will be making its way to PS VR2 in the coming year.

”We’re pleased to share that we are currently testing the ability for PS VR2 players to access additional games on PC to offer even more game variety in addition to the PS VR2 titles available through PS5. We hope to make this support available in 2024, so stay tuned for more updates”, said Sony in a blog post. This means that PS VR2 can support connection to a PC for playing games. However, not a lot of details about the development were shared.

Aside from this, Sony announced a couple of other updates regarding the games coming to PS VR2 throughout 2024. One such title is The Wizards – Dark Times: Brotherhood, which was released on February 22. It is an action-adventure spellcasting game where you become a powerful Wizard, and thanks to the power of Playstation VR2, you can cast various spells with your very own hands.

Then there’s Wanderer: The Fragments of Fate, which will be out on June 27. Playing as Asher Neumann, players can time travel at will, exploring immersive worlds and experiencing action while solving mind-bending puzzles and wielding their time-traveling powers to reshape the course of history.

Next is Little Cities: Bigger!, coming out on March 12. The game reimagines classic city buildings from the ground up for virtual reality. Zombie Army will be coming sometime in 2024. With online 2-player co-op, the campaign sees you reprise the role of a Deadhunter as they fight their way across war-torn Europe doing battle with the zombie hordes.

Soul Covenant will also be out sometime during this year for PS VR2 as a narrative action JRPG where in a near-future Japan that sees humanity fight for survival against a mech regime, you’re tasked to take on hordes of encroaching enemies and colossal, powerful foes in tense, melee-based combat.

Finally, the Arizona Sunshine 2 free update was also released on February 22 with a new companion and three new Horde mode maps.
