Samsung Knox: Everything You Need To Know

0

Privacy and security have become increasingly important in today’s world, as cases of data theft continue to emerge frequently. To ensure the safety of their users, companies like Samsung take various measures, one of which is Samsung Knox.

What Is Samsung Knox?

At its core, Samsung Knox is designed to secure devices by safeguarding them against malware, network attacks, and malicious threats. It’s built into the hardware and software of most Samsung Galaxy devices, providing a robust security framework right from the moment you power on your device. It helps store your personal data inside a protected environment.

According to Samsung, “Samsung Knox is a business platform for configuring and managing mobile devices – offering efficient and customized use in various industries. Keep your mobile infrastructure connected, protected, and productive”.

Why Was Samsung Knox Created?

Samsung introduced Knox with the Galaxy Note 3, aiming to cater to the growing trend of using personal devices for work purposes, known as “Bring Your Own Device” (BYOD). Knox’s initial goal was to ensure that corporate data remained secure on employees’ personal phones.

Today, Samsung Knox is available on an extensive list of Samsung Galaxy smartphones and tablets, making it available not only to enterprise customers but also to general users. Knox offers protection at both the hardware and software levels, which is symbolised by the “Secured by Knox” branding. If you see this badging while booting up your device or in the ‘About Phone’ section under Software Version as ‘Knox Version’, you should know that Samsung Knox protects your device.

What All Comes Under Samsung Knox?

As of now, Samsung Knox’s primary security platform includes the following features:

  • Root of Trust
  • Knox Vault
  • Trusted Boot
  • Real-time Kernel Protection
  • Device Health Attestation
  • Sensitive Data Protection
  • App Security

These features help protect sensitive data on your device. The Knox Vault protects data such as hardware-backed Keystore keys, Samsung Attestation Key, biometric data, and blockchain credentials. Until now, it was only available on flagships launched since Galaxy S21. For the first time, Samsung is bringing the same to its Galaxy A-series devices, including the newly launched Galaxy A55 5G and Galaxy A35 5G.

Samsung’s Knox Vault offers comprehensive protection against both hardware and software attacks by constructing a secure execution environment that is physically isolated from the system’s central and memory. It can help protect the most critical data on a device, including lock screen credentials, such as codes, passwords and patterns. Only a user with the correct lock screen credentials can access their data, even if the device is lost or stolen.

Features like Trusted Boot identify and distinguish unauthorised or out-of-date bootloaders before they can compromise the device. In case of such an event, a hardware tamper fuses the Samsung devices come equipped with get triggered, permanently encrypting sensitive work apps and data on the device. This action is irreversible, so some apps like Samsung Pay, Secure Folder, and more also stop working as they rely on Samsung Knox for user security.

Samsung secure folder by knox

Secure folders are another feature that has Samsung Knox at its core. The folder is protected by the defence-grade Samsung Knox security platform, which encrypts all data stored there, keeping your information safe from malicious attacks. You can also add a passcode or biometric lock to keep your data safe from prying eyes.

Secure Folder basically creates a private, encrypted space on your Samsung Galaxy phone. Apps and data moved to Secure Folder are kept separately on the device, away from the generally accessible data, and gain an “additional layer of security and privacy.”

Which Samsung Devices Support Knox?

While most Samsung smartphones and tablets are bundled with Knox, a few exceptions exist. These exceptions include some budget-friendly devices running a simplified version of One called One UI Core, which lacks Knox protection. This omission is due to the need for extra hardware and resources to enable all of Knox’s essential features.

Knox represents Samsung’s vision of combining security with convenience. It’s a solution that has evolved over time to meet the changing needs of mobile device users, particularly in the corporate sector. Knox has achieved more global government security and third-party analyst certifications than any other device, platform, or operating system. With over 1 billion Samsung devices secured by Knox, it’s clear that Samsung has established a trusted platform that users can rely on for their security needs.

iQOO Z9 5G Launched In India: Should You Consider It Over Nothing Phone (2a)?

0

iQOO has finally launched its much anticipated iQOO Z9 5G smartphone in India that comes with a MediaTek Dimensity chipset and is positioned as a lower-end mid ranger. The iQOO Z9 5G can be availed in two variants and competes with the likes of the recently launched Nothing Phone (2a). Should you consider it over Nothing’s offering? We’ll try to answer that for you by the end of this article.

iQOO Z9 5G: Price, Offers, Availability

The iQOO Z9 5G can be bought in two trims, including 8GB + 128GB priced at Rs 19,999 and 8GB + 256GB priced at Rs 21,999. The device is available in two colours, such as Graphene Blue and Brushed Green. Buyers can avail a flat Rs 2,000 discount on ICICI Bank and HDFC bank cards.

There’s also a 3-month No Cost option on offer. As it is an Amazon exclusive product, Prime subscribers can buy the phone in early access sale on March 13 at 12PM IST while it will be available to all buyers from March 14, at 12PM IST.

iQOO Z9 5G: Specs

The iQOO Z9 5G gets a 6.6-inch FHD+ AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, 300Hz touch sampling rate and 1800 nits peak brightness. It is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7200 SoC, coupled with up to 8GB LPDDR4x RAM and up to 256GB of UFS 2.2 storage.

It is backed by a dual rear camera system, including a 50MP f/1.79 Sony IMX882 main sensor and a 2MP f/2.4 bokeh sensor. On the front, it gets a 16MP f/2.45 selfie sensor.

It packs a 5000mAh battery with 44W Fast charging support. There is an in-display fingerprint sensor for biometrics. For audio, it has a stereo speaker setup. The device will run on FunTouch OS 14 based on Android 14 and will receive 2 years of major OS upgrades. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth v5.3, GPS, 5G and a USB-C port for charging.

iQOO Z9 5G Vs. Nothing Phone (2a)

Nothing Phone 2a cameras

Nothing launched it’s Phone (2a) smartphone last week, starting at Rs 23,999 for the 8GB + 128GB model, Rs 25,999 for the 8GB + 256GB model and Rs 27,999 for the 12GB + 256GB model and it comes with the same chipset as the iQOO Z9 5G. Also if you look at the price, there’s quite a price gap between the iQOO Z9 5G and the Nothing Phone (2a), which alone would appeal to the buyers, making them prefer the Z9 5G over the Phone (2a).

However, the Phone (2a) has its own benefits. First, the device comes with a 50MP ultra-wide angle sensor on the back which is more practical than the 2MP bokeh sensor on the iQOO Z9 5G which is quite useless in comparison.

Second, the Phone (2a) offers you a closer to experience which is actually much smoother than FunTouch OS and we can claim that from our past experience. Moreover, Nothing is offering 3 years of major OS upgrades over iQOO’s 2 years, increasing the longevity of the device.

Thirdly, for those who prefer it, the Phone (2a) offers a unique design on the back, thanks to it’s glyph interface LED lights that’s unlike anything one has seen in this segment. While it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, as we noted in our review of the Nothing Phone (2a), it definitely adds to the appeal of the device.

On the other hand, if you’re looking to save some money and still want performance similar to the Phone (2a), along with a decent display and long-lasting battery life, but are willing to compromise on software, NFC, and an ultra-wide angle camera, then the iQOO Z9 5G isn’t a bad choice either.

In response to community feedback, Forza has implemented a major overhaul to the Car Progression system. This update empowers players with the ability to immediately access and equip any desired performance parts, effectively removing the previous level-based restrictions. This change is aimed at providing a more personalised and unrestricted customisation experience.

Sennheiser HD 490 Pro Plus Review: Professional Sound and Versatile Comfort

0

Sennheiser is a well-known brand associated with high-quality headphones for a long time. Their headphones are well-regarded by both audiophiles and professionals for their excellent design and balanced sound. Recently, Sennheiser introduced the 490 Pro series to improve the brand’s reputation further. Among the series, the HD 490 Pro Plus is a top-of-the-line product that claims to offer excellent sound quality, comfort, and reliability. But, does it deliver? Let’s find it in our Sennheiser HD 490 Pro Plus review.

Design and Build:

The HD 490 Pro Plus headphones are stylish and built to last. The open-mesh grille not only looks good but also helps with ventilation, ensuring comfort during long listening sessions. The solid construction and attention to detail are evident in every component, from the sleek exterior to the swivelling ear cups that provide flexibility and convenience.

Sennheiser HD 490 Pro Plus

One of the standout features of the HD 490 Pro Plus is its swappable fabric and velour ear pads, allowing users to tailor their listening experience to their preferences. However, the process of swapping ear pads may require some effort.

Let me explain. Sennheiser HD 490 Pro features swappable fabric and velour ear pads, and switching between the two sets of ear pads wasn’t as easy as I expected. Instead of magnets, the ear pads use plastic parts to latch onto the headphones, which requires some force to remove and reattach them. During my usage, I was a bit concerned that the plastic clasps might eventually break. However, despite my fear that the plastic lock might break, the locking mechanism worked perfectly.

Sennheiser HD 490 Pro Plus comfort 3.5 mm jack

The Sennheiser HD 490 Pro headphones have an interesting feature of a mini XLR input on both ear cups. This allows you to connect the cable to either the right or left ear cup, depending on the location of your interface in your studio setup. Additionally, a small coil near the top of the cable ensures no issues arise due to cable tugging or noise caused by the cable moving against your desk or body.

Comfort:

I found both ear pads on these headphones very comfortable to wear, even for extended periods. However, the velour pads stood out in comfort, making it one of the most comfortable headphones I have worn in a while. Moreover, the Sennheiser HD 490 PRO headphones have machine-washable ear pads, which makes them durable and long-lasting. This is good not only for hygiene but also for your wallet.

Sound Quality:

HD 490 Pro Plus headphones offer a balanced sound signature with exceptional detail and clarity across the spectrum. The correct word would be neutral Sound Signature!

To understand a music professional’s opinion, I shared the headphones with a friend who is a budding music composer. He said, “Whether you’re mixing tracks or simply enjoying your favourite music, these headphones reproduce sound accurately across the frequency spectrum. The open-back design creates a natural soundstage, allowing for an immersive listening experience.”

Sennheiser HD 490 Pro Plus Review

Coming back to views, while using the Sennheiser HD 490 PRO, I noticed that they don’t passively isolate environmental noise. This is because they are open-back headphones, meaning they are not designed to block out external sounds. The open design of the headphones creates a more natural sound that allows you to hear almost everything going on around you while wearing them. However, this means that anyone sitting next to you can also hear what you are listening to.

Velour ear pads retain lower frequencies than fabric ear pads, which creates a noticeable difference in sound, depending on which ones you use. Fabric ear pads are suitable for mixing, as they follow a more traditional open-back frequency response that allows you to discern issues in your tracks’ mid and upper frequencies easily. On the other hand, velour ear pads are suitable for producing music and even podcasts. We used them extensively for editing our podcasts and interviews, and we could see the difference in the output.

Moreover, Sennheiser includes a license for the dearVR Mix SE plug-in, providing mixing engineers with additional tools for sound simulation.

HD 490 Pro Plus review

Connectivity:

While the headphones have an impedance of 130 ohms, they deliver ample volume when plugged directly into a laptop. Additionally, Sennheiser has included a 3.5mm to 6.3mm jack adapter that ensures compatibility with a wide range of devices, from professional interfaces to mobiles. While these headphones do not support wireless connectivity, the included accessories and convenient cable management options make them suitable for studio use and everyday listening.

Value:

Priced competitively, the HD 490 Pro Plus offers exceptional value for money, considering its professional build quality and impressive sound performance. Whether you opt for the Pro Plus or the standard Pro version, you can expect the same level of excellence, with the main difference lying in the included accessories.

If you’re having difficulty choosing between the Sennheiser HD 490 Pro Plus and the Sennheiser HD 490 Pro, let me help you out. The only difference between the two models is the accessories that they come with. You can decide which accessories you prefer. The Sennheiser HD 490 Pro Plus is priced at ₹41,300, while the Sennheiser HD 490 Pro is priced at ₹34,500.

The accessories that come with the Plus headphones include an additional headband pad, a longer cable, and a semi-hard travel case with a plush, well-padded interior. This travel case is handy when you need to move your headphones from one place to another, as they are not small.

Boult Z40 Pro TWS Earbuds Review: Surprising Results

0

Boult Audio is not a new bee in the audio industry and is known for competing with brands like Noise and BoAt in India. It recently came out with a new pair of earbuds called Boult Z40 Pro, which sell for Rs 1,399. Are these earbuds appealing enough? We’ll try to find that out in our review of the Boult Z40 Pro TWS earbuds.

Design & Comfort

Boult Z40 Pro earbuds

The Boult Z40 Pro has a uniquely designed case that opens upwards when held vertically. The earbuds then appear standing inside the case, in contrast to the general sitting position we see in the majority of the TWS earbuds.

Boult Z40 Pro earbuds

The case has a rubberised grip finish, and the separation point of the lid and case extends up to the back, where the hinge for opening the lid resides. However, there’s no spring mechanism, meaning the hinge won’t hold itself open if you tilt the case down and will close. The colour we received was violet, which looks minimal. We liked the black colour better, which has a contrasting orange shade as well. Overall, it’s an impressively built case with a design that’ll definitely turn heads.

The comfort factor of the earbuds doesn’t disappoint either. The Z40 Pro TWS earbuds had a snug fit in my ear and didn’t fall off at any given point, even if I was shaking my head aggressively. In addition, these buds are IPX5-rated, making them splashproof.

There are a couple of issues, though, which I faced with the earbuds. They often stayed connected to my phone even when I put them in the case and closed it. While at times they’d shut down fine, more often they wouldn’t and I had to manually touch and hold on either of them to turn them off manually which was a bit of a hassle at times. Aside from that, the buds showed the same charge level the next day I’d pick them up even though they were in the case for the whole night. In other words, the buds didn’t charge the whole night.

Talking of touch controls, they are impressively responsive and quick to initiate the desired action. Touches like single tap, double tap, triple tap and even quadruple taps are supported and work in an instant. They are assigned to actions like play/pause, skip forward/skip back, volume up/down, game/music mode and voice assistant activation. As there’s no support which we also wouldn’t expect at this price point, you cannot customise them.

Finally, there’s an on both the case and the earbuds where in the former, it would inform you about battery levels while in latter, it tells you about the pairing status.

Audio, Call Quality & Battery Life

The audio in Z40 Pro depends on 10mm drivers. It supports Environmental Noise Cancellation, SBC, and codecs and is equipped with 4 mics. The buds connect wirelessly via v5.3.

The audio quality of the Z40 Pro is surprisingly decent, considering the price. It focuses more on the treble and bass with a V-shaped equaliser for sound signature. There’s a slight echo effect in the sound but there’s ample bass for that thumping feel.

The vocals remain clear while the instrument separation is okay as well. The mid frequencies take a back seat but that doesn’t adversely affect the overall quality of the audio. I wouldn’t say its a balanced sound signature but it isn’t poor by any means.

The ENC does come into play while calling, which is unexpectedly nice for the price of the earbuds. It does pick up background noises when they are too loud, but in quieter conditions, your voice clearly goes through to the person on the receiving end.

Boult claims that the buds can support up to 45ms low but that doesn’t seem to translate well in real world use. The latency is quite high and even with game mode ON, there’s only slight improvement which isn’t enough for an ideal experience.

Connectivity-wise, I faced no issues while connecting to various devices, and there were no breaks in audio or other issues of any kind.

As for battery life, Boult claims it can run for up to 100 hours with the case along with an 8 hour playtime with just the buds on a single charge. After using it for around 2 days, I still have ample battery left in the case so it can go on for a week without a recharge. However, I wasn’t able to reach the 8-hour mark but fell slightly short of it, maybe because I was always listening at high volume.
