What Are Mercenay Spyware Attacks Apple Is Warning iPhone Users Of?

0

Apple has issued an urgent warning to iPhone users in 92 countries about a series of sophisticated spyware attacks. The tech giant has detected attempts to remotely compromise devices associated with users’ Apple IDs. As a result, Apple has taken swift action to safeguard its customers. This development is significant for cybersecurity and highlights the importance of taking precautions to protect personal information.

What Are Mercenary Spyware Attacks?

In an email notification sent to potentially affected iPhone users, Apple states that mercenary spyware attacks, like those using Pegasus software from the NSO Group in Israel, are not common and are much more sophisticated than regular cybercriminal activity or consumer malware. The company said in a statement that these attacks cost millions of dollars and are targeted at a very small number of individuals, but the targeting is ongoing and global.

The notification further read, “Apple detected that you are being targeted by a mercenary spyware attack that is trying to remotely compromise the iPhone associated with your Apple ID -xxx-. This attack is likely targeting you specifically because of who you are or what you do. Although it’s never possible to achieve absolute certainty when detecting such attacks, Apple has high confidence in this warning — please take it seriously.”

The threat notification emails were sent at around 12.30 am IST on Thursday to impacted users in India. However, it is unclear how many people have received the threat notification from Apple.

How To Safeguard Yourself From Such An Attack?

The Californian smartphone maker also advised users to stay aware regarding any kind of unknown links they receive on their device and tells users not to click on them. In addition, it outlined steps for the users to safeguard themselves by updating their iPhone software to the latest version or enable the lockdown mode which is claimed to be the ultimately secure feature for protecting the data.

However, Apple stated that it could not disclose further details about the cause of the threat notification. This decision was made to prevent mercenary spyware attackers from adjusting their tactics to avoid detection in the future.

Apple began issuing these threat notifications in 2021, and individuals in 150 countries have received them since then. Last year, when the notification was sent in October 2023, at least 20 iPhone users in India received it. Apple, at the time, notified users of a “state-sponsored” attack on their iPhones but later clarified that it wasn’t by any state-sponsored attacker when opposed by the Indian government.

Poco C61: A Cover-up For Redmi A3 Issues?

0

Poco and Redmi are two sub-brands of Xiaomi that often release models that complement each other. This trend has been followed for the past couple of years. For instance, when the Redmi A3 was launched in India, the Poco C61 was introduced shortly after. However, it appears that the purpose of launching C61 was to cover up the issues reported about Redmi A3.

Issues With Redmi A3

We have collected consumer feedback from e-commerce websites like Flipkart and Amazon to list out some of the issues faced by users of the Redmi A3 smartphone. As we have not used the device ourselves, we relied on the experiences shared by consumers who have been using the smartphone since its launch in February 2024. It appears that many users are not completely satisfied with the device.

A per the user reviews on Amazon, the device tends to slow down considerably after initial setup. Additionally, there have been complaints about the fingerprint sensor malfunctioning and the loudspeaker volume being too low to be useful, even for ringtones. Some users have also reported heating issues with the device.

Although some positive reviews exist, the overall rating for this device stands at 3.2 stars, which is generally considered poor and unacceptable. Similar sentiments are echoed in Flipkart reviews, where the device has a slightly better rating of 4 stars compared to Amazon. However, the reviews are still not too great, as most users report software lags and low speaker volume, which mirrors the reviews on Amazon.

Poco C61: A Cover Up?

Poco c61 launched

The Redmi A3 was launched on February 14. However, more than a month later, on March 26, the Poco C61 was unveiled in India. It was essentially a rebranded Redmi A3. To make matters worse, the Poco C61 was released at a lower price than the Redmi A3 for the same specifications.

The Redmi A3 was offered in three variants with different storage and configurations. The prices for the base model with 3GB RAM and 64GB storage was Rs 7,299, while the 4GB RAM and 128GB storage model was priced at Rs 8,299. The top-end variant, equipped with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage, costed Rs 9,299.

On the other hand, the Poco C61 was launched in two variants, namely 4GB RAM with 64GB storage and 6GB RAM with 128GB storage. The prices for these models were Rs 7,499 and Rs 8,499 respectively. It’s worth noting that the 3GB RAM variant was not made available, possibly due to performance complaints associated with that particular model.

So what does it translate into? For just Rs 200 more, buyers can now get more RAM in the base model of Poco C61 as compared to Redmi A3. Additionally, the top-end model of both devices, which has 6GB RAM and 128GB storage, is Rs 1,000 cheaper in the case of Poco C61 over the Redmi A3. This means that customers who purchased the 6GB RAM model of Redmi A3 may feel frustrated that the same device, under the name of Poco C61, is available at a lower price just over a month later. It seems that the brand has taken Redmi A3 customers for a ride.

Xiaomi is known for releasing smartphones that provide good value for money, especially in the form of their Redmi Note series devices. However, the brand seems to be neglecting the quality in the budget segment, and there is definitely room for improvement in terms of the experience they offer their customers, particularly within the Indian market for budget smartphones.

AI Automation: The Enterprise Game-Changer

0

In an age where the only constant is change, enterprises across the globe are finding themselves at a crucial crossroads. The digital revolution, spearheaded by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Automation, is not just knocking on the door; it’s barging in, bringing with it the promise of unprecedented efficiency and the threat of obsolescence for those who lag behind. The need to accelerate AI-powered Automation has never been more pressing. It’s not just about staying relevant; it’s about surviving and thriving in a rapidly evolving business landscape.

Ankur Kothari, Co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of Automation Anywhere, emphasizes the potential of Automation to drive significant value for businesses by focusing on critical areas. He said, “Key areas include enhancing employee productivity, improving customer satisfaction, facilitating rapid business transformation through generative AI, and fostering innovation through employee upskilling.”

The Competitive Edge

Imagine a world where your business operations are so streamlined that they can predict and adapt to changes in real-time. This is not a distant future fantasy but a tangible reality made possible by AI-powered Automation.

Companies that have already embraced this technology are reaping the benefits, from reduced operational costs to enhanced customer experiences and everything in between. For instance, Amazon’s use of in logistics and customer service has set a new benchmark in efficiency, forcing competitors to play catch-up. It’s clear: in the race for market dominance, AI-powered Automation is not just an advantage; it’s the very engine of progress.

Operational Efficiency Redefined

The impact of AI-powered Automation on operational efficiency is nothing short of transformative. Traditional processes that once required hours of human labour can now be completed in minutes, if not seconds, with higher accuracy and lower costs. For example, JP Morgan Chase’s COIN (Contract Intelligence) program, which uses machine learning to interpret commercial loan agreements, has slashed the time spent on this labour-intensive task from 360,000 hours a year to mere seconds per document. This leap in efficiency allows enterprises to allocate their resources more effectively, focusing on innovation and strategic growth rather than mundane tasks.

Sharing his views on the transformative power of Automation, Sudesh Jain, Head of Finance Shared Services at Adani Group, said, “Automation has been pivotal in transforming our financial shared services. It has streamlined our processes, cut down on errors, and boosted efficiency significantly.”

He emphasizes the implementation of more than 200 automated bots, which resulted in significant cost savings equivalent to the work of 65 full-time staff members. This optimization has not only improved operational efficiency but also enhanced the group’s ability to make strategic decisions more quickly and move human workers to more demanding tasks.

Jain further notes that Automation underpins the core values of ABEX: Assurance, Controllership, and Excellence, ensuring the highest standards in every facet of their work.

Navigating the Talent Gap

One of the most compelling reasons to accelerate AI adoption is the widening talent gap in many industries. As technology evolves, the skills required to remain competitive become more specialized, leaving many companies needing help finding qualified candidates. AI-powered Automation offers a solution by taking over routine tasks, allowing employees to upskill and focus on more complex, value-added activities. This not only alleviates the talent crunch but also boosts employee satisfaction and retention by providing more engaging and meaningful work.

Staying Ahead of the Curve

In today’s fast-paced business environment, being a laggard in technology adoption is a recipe for disaster. The speed at which AI and Automation are evolving means that what’s considered cutting-edge today might be obsolete tomorrow. Enterprises must not only adopt these technologies but also continuously seek ways to improve and expand their capabilities. Companies like Tesla and Google are prime examples, constantly pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with AI and Automation in their respective fields.

Ethical Considerations and Social Responsibility

As we forge ahead with AI-powered Automation, it’s crucial to navigate the ethical implications and ensure that the march of progress does not come at the expense of social responsibility. Issues such as data privacy, job displacement, and AI bias must be addressed head-on, with transparent policies and a commitment to ethical AI use. Enterprises that prioritize these concerns will not only avoid potential pitfalls but also build trust with their customers and the broader community.

The Time is Now

The message is clear: for enterprises, the acceleration of AI-powered Automation is not just a strategic move; it’s an existential necessity. The benefits, from operational efficiency to competitive advantage, are too significant to ignore. However, this journey requires more than just the adoption of new technologies.

It calls for a cultural shift, a reimagining of processes, and a commitment to continuous learning and improvement.

As we stand on the brink of a new era in business, the question for enterprises is not whether to embrace AI-powered Automation, but how quickly and effectively they can do so. The future belongs to those who are bold enough to step into the unknown, armed with the transformative power of AI. The race is on, and the time to accelerate is now.

X On iOS Gets Passkeys Support: How To Use?

0

X, formerly known as Twitter, began rolling out support for Passkeys login method on back in January but it was limited to the US at the time. Now, the company has announced that it is now rolling out support for Passkeys on its X iOS globally. Here’s what it is and how you can use it to conveniently access your account.

What Are Passkeys?

A Passkey is a much easier way to unlock your account than using a password. A passkey is a FIDO credential stored on your computer or phone, and it is used to unlock your online accounts. It works using public key cryptography and proof that you own the credential is only shown to your online account when you unlock your phone. Passkeys make signing in easy and convenient. Once you are set up, you can use your passkey to log in to your account across different devices without having to remember or reset a forgotten password.

Passkeys are more secure than passwords because they are uniquely generated for every account by your own device, and are less vulnerable to phishing attacks. And they work on all your devices that are signed in to the same Google or Apple account, as both these manufacturers offer support for Passkeys in their respective operating systems.
