Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 Ultra to sport Circular Display in Square body: Renders Leaked

0

Samsung will be hosting a new Galaxy Unpacked event in July 2024 according to reports and there, the brand will unveil new set of hardware including the new Galaxy Watch 7 series. For the first time, the series will consist of an Ultra branded smartwatch, dubbed Galaxy Watch 7 Ultra, the renders for which have now leaked.

The report comes from Smartprix in collaboration with OnLeaks, as per whom the Galaxy Watch 7 Ultra will sport an unusual yet unique design. The most prominent change would be the departure from the circular dial to a square-ish outer frame that will have a circular display inside. The Watch 7 Ultra will retain the rotating bezel Galaxy Watch fans have always liked in the former Classic variants.

A circular display means Samsung doesn’t have to optimise its again for a different shape. However, the slightly rounded square design gives it a unique look and resembles the shape of the default icons seen in One UI.

Galaxy watch 7 ultra

The display of the watch measures approximately 1.5 inches in diameter, which is exactly the same as the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic. The overall dimensions of Watch 7 Ultra are larger than the Watch 6 Classic, measuring at 47 x 47.4 x 16.4 mm. The rotating dial now has small lines to denote the hours instead of numbers.

In addition, it will have a third circular button on the right between the traditional two keys. While it doesn’t look like it will function like a rotating crown, it could offer other features tailored specifically for the Galaxy Watch 7 Ultra.

At the back of the watch, there is a circular array of individual circles and squares housing the sensors, unlike the seamless ring of found on the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic. The strap of the Watch 7 Ultra also looks wider and bigger than Watch 6 Classic’s. Finally, the Watch 7 Ultra also gets a bigger speaker grille on the left compared to the former models.

South Korea Unveils Ambitious Plan to Dominate Global Semiconductor Market

0

South Korea is making a strong move to secure its position in the global semiconductor market with a comprehensive support program worth 26 trillion won ($19 billion). President Yoon Suk Yeol announced the initiative during the second economic issue review meeting on May 9, highlighting the strategic importance of the semiconductor sector for national economic stability and growth.

Strategic Shift to System Semiconductors

In a statement, President Yoon emphasized the critical role of semiconductors in South Korea’s economy. He highlighted the importance of proactive measures to mitigate risks associated with global economic fluctuations. “Our country’s economic dependence on foreign countries is very high, and it is sensitive and greatly affected by even small fluctuations in the global economy. Therefore, even small risk factors must be thoroughly checked in advance,” President Yoon stated.

President Yoon, in his forward-looking approach, stressed the necessity of adapting to global market changes and focusing on system semiconductors, which command two-thirds of the market. Despite South Korea’s stronghold in memory semiconductors, he acknowledged the country’s need to catch up in the fabless and foundry sectors, where leaders like TSMC currently dominate. He underscored the importance of an industrial strategy that extends beyond CPUs and GPUs to encompass semiconductors.

Comprehensive Support Program for Semiconductors

Recognizing the semiconductor industry as a battleground for national economic strength, President Yoon detailed a comprehensive support program worth $19 billion. This program includes financial support, infrastructure development, research and development (R&D) funding, and targeted assistance for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the semiconductor sector.

Key Components of the Semiconductor Support Program

  1. Financial Support: The Korea Development Bank will establish a new financial support program worth 17 trillion won. This initiative aims to address liquidity issues faced by companies investing heavily in new facilities and line expansions.
  2. Tax Credits: To ensure continuous investment in R&D and facilities, the government will extend existing tax credits, effectively providing subsidies to support these critical investments.
  3. Infrastructure Development: The creation of semiconductor mega clusters will be accelerated, with the government taking responsibility for the rapid development of essential infrastructure such as electricity, water, and roads.
  4. Stable Electricity Supply: Recognizing the crucial role of stable and high-quality electricity in semiconductor production, President Yoon called for the swift passage of the National Power Grid Special Act to shorten the construction period for transmission lines.
  5. Support for SMEs: A semiconductor ecosystem fund worth 1 trillion won will be established to support promising fabless and SME companies, helping them grow into global players. Additionally, shared demonstration infrastructure, like mini fabs, will be developed to meet industry needs.

Industry Concerns and Misconceptions

Addressing concerns about government support being perceived as benefiting large corporations, President Yoon clarified that over 70% of the support program is directed toward SMEs. He emphasized that expanding tax support will stimulate investment, enhance the semiconductor industry ecosystem, increase corporate profits, and create quality jobs, ultimately benefiting the broader economy.

Truecaller Introduces AI-Powered ‘Personal Voice’ Feature

0

Truecaller has introduced a new AI-powered ‘personal voice’ feature that allows users to customize it to sound like their own voice. This personalized voice can greet callers and identify the purpose of their call. The feature leverages Microsoft’s Azure speech technology.

Previously, Truecaller introduced an AI assistant capable of answering, recording, and screening calls. The new ‘personal voice’ feature enhances this by enabling users to answer calls with their AI-powered voice without needing to pick up the phone.

Raphael Mimoun, the product director and general manager of Truecaller Israel, stated in the official blog post, “The personal voice feature allows our users to use their own voice, enabling the digital assistant to sound like them when handling incoming calls. This groundbreaking capability not only adds a touch of familiarity and comfort for the users but also showcases the power of AI in transforming the way we interact with our digital assistants.”

How to Set Up ‘Personal Voice’ in Truecaller

To use the ‘personal voice’ feature on Truecaller, follow these steps:

  1. Download or update the Truecaller on your smartphone.
  2. Subscribe to Truecaller Premium, priced at Rs 132 per month or Rs 925 per year in India.
  3. Go to Settings and open the Assistant settings in the app.
  4. Follow the onscreen instructions to set up your personal voice, which includes recording your own voice for reference.

Once set up, the Truecaller AI assistant can act as a virtual shield against unwanted calls. When you miss a call, it uses your chosen voice to inquire about the caller’s identity and purpose. This conversation is converted to text and displayed on your screen. With Truecaller’s spam-detecting AI, you can decide whether to answer the call or block the number. This feature not only saves time dealing with unwanted calls but also adds an extra layer of security against spam and robocalls.

HMD Aura Is The New Entry-Level Handset From Nokia Smartphone Maker

0

HMD recently began pushing its own smartphones in the market and the brand has launched a trio of them globally, one in the US, and a new one called HMD Aura is now launching in Australia. The HMD Aura is a basic entry-level smartphone that has a Unisoc under the hood.

HMD Aura: Price

The HMD Aura is now available at JB Hi-Fi for 179 AUD, which is around Rs 9,870 when converted to INR. It’s available in two colours, Glacier Green and Indigo Black. There’s no mention of the smartphone on HMD Australia’s website as of now, so an official launch might be awaited. As per the retailer website, the device has a 2-year manufacturer’s warranty.

HMD Aura: Specifications

The Aura sports a 6.56-inch display with an resolution of 1600 x 900 pixels. There’s a V-notch housing the front-facing 5MP selfie camera. The handset is powered by the Unisoc SC9863A1 chipset, paired with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage that’s expandable via a card of up to 256GB.

At the rear, the handset has a 13MP main sensor paired with a 0.08MP depth sensor. Connectivity options on the handset include 4G, Hybrid Dual (nano-SIM + nano-SIM/micro-SD), GPS, USB-C, 3.5 mm audio, Wi-Fi 4 (802.11 b/g/n), and v4.2. In addition, it gets a 5000mAh battery with standard 10W charging. It runs on 13 out of the box and will receive two years of security patches.

HMD Aura: Will It Come To India?

There’s no word on when or if the Aura will come to India. HMD is yet to confirm the availability of the handset outside Australia. What we do know is that HMD is working on another smartphone for India called Arrow, that will be a smartphone with a completely new design over the HMD Pulse.

Realme Narzo N65 5G: Realme Keeps Launching Same Smartphones In India With Different Badging

0

Relme recently unveiled a new smartphone in India called Realme GT 6T and due to its apt price-to-performance ratio, unique feature set and specifications, we suggested you could definitely consider it among other options in the market. Now, the brand is returning back to its old formula of launching rebadged smartphones in India, with the latest example being the Realme Narzo N65 5G.

Realme Narzo N65 5G: A Rebadged Realme C65 5G

Realme revealed the key specs of its upcoming Narzo device, which will launch on May 28 at 12 noon. The device includes a MediaTek Dimensity 6300 under the hood, 14 OS, support for storage expansion up to 2TB, and a 6.67″ 120Hz centred punch-hole display supporting Rainwater Smart Touch tech.

In addition, the device will have a flat design, with the circular camera array on the back housing a 50MP primary camera. The details for the additional sensor are unknown as of now. It will be backed up by a 5000mAh battery with 15W fast charging, get an IP54-rated build, have Dynamic Button functionality, a Mini Capsule, Riding Mode, and Air Gestures as well.

Sounds familiar? It will, because it’s essentially the same smartphone as the Realme C65 5G which the brand launched in India around a month ago. The handset has one difference over the C65 5G, and that’s the yellow colour option but that’s about it. So far, whatever specifications have been revealed look identical to that of a previous smartphone released by the brand.

What would be interesting now is to see how Realme will price the handset. It’s not the first time Realme has pulled off such a move, as so it has done with the Realme Narzo 70x 5G, which was a rebranded Realme 12x 5G. At this point, the Realme Narzo lineup only seems to add more colour options for the brand’s past products and no real value to the Indian smartphone market, aside from creating confusion for the consumers.

Top Gaming Features of Poco F6 5G

0

Poco has debuted the new F6 5G smartphone in India as a new affordable flagship that comes with the new Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chip. Being a trimmed down version of the 8 Gen 3, the 8s Gen 3 excels in similar areas as its elder sibling which includes gaming. Poco F6 5G is taking full advantage of all this power and has integrated a slew of gaming-centric features, the top 5 of which according to us are mentioned below.

Game Turbo

Poco f6 game turbo

Game Turbo is where all the gaming features reside. You can access the tools from the Game Turbo toolbar while inside a game by swiping from the top left corner when in landscape orientation. It gives you quick acess to other apps on your phone which open in a smaller window so you don’t have to leave your game if you want to reply to a message or check something else.

Then, you can also instantly clear memory, free up storage, check the current frame rate of the game, enable DND, take a screenshot or record your screen, change the visual quality, cast your screen, turn on or off Wi-fi, change brightness, access voice changer or even set a timer.

Such similar gaming tools are also offered by other brands including Samsung, OnePlus, Asus, Motorola, Realme, OPPO, Tecno, Infinix and more, in their specific mid-range and higher end smartphones.

Game DND

While you are in a nail-biting battle or you are just about to win that race, there’s always some distraction that occurs in the form of notifications or something else at the worst possible time. To minimise such occurrences, Poco has integrated what’s called Game DND. Herein, you can answer calls hands-free or restrict buttons and gestures during games to prevent accidental triggers.

Poco f6 gaming features

Aside from that, the enhanced experience section further provides more options to disable auto brightness, reading mode, screenshot gestures and the ability to open notification shade so your gameplay experience is fully distraction-free.

Performance mode

Accessible via the Game Turbo section, the performance mode can help with optimisation to reduce network for better ping, optimise touch controls for increased touch response and sensitivity along with a dynamic performance toggle that can automatically set the game for the optimum experience.

This mode can also help you avoid overheating, manage memory exceptions or even increase connection speed in case you are connected to a Mi or a Redmi router.

Game-specific & Visual customisation

Poco is allowing users to take things into their hands and customise their gameplay experience according to their own specific needs with the Poco F6. The brand is allowing for a more granular control over how the GPU behaves in each game. Accessible via the Game Turbo app, one can select their game and swipe from the bottom to access these controls.

Here, you can tell the phone to fire up the GPU at its max power or take control of how things work. You can set the frame rate for each game, along with the resolution, Anti-aliasing intensity, Anisotropic filtering quality, texture filtering quality, and turn on the Optimise Graphics toggle.

Under the additional settings tab, you can customise the touch controls including swipe response, sensitivity for continuous taps, aiming accuracy, tap stability, or even set the touch resistant area. One can also enhance the visuals by applying a filter to the game for, say, better visibility in darker environments.

Not many OEMs offer such an extensive set of gaming specific features except for a couple, such as Asus which specifically makes gaming phones and now, Realme, who has also introduced a similar set of gaming features in its latest Realme GT 6T smartphone, under the name of “Geek Power Tuning.”

These were the top gaming features of the Poco F6 5G which makes it an impressive gaming phone too, apart from a well-rounded mid-ranger. We have talked about the gaming performance of the handset in the detailed review of the Poco F6 5G so make sure to check that out as well.

Poco F6 5G Review: An All-Rounder With A Few Quirks

Poco has finally unveiled the Poco F6 5G in India at a starting price point of Rs 29,999. The new flagship F-series handset gets the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 under the hood, making it the first device to launch in India with this chipset. Here’s our detailed review of the new Poco F6 5G where we’ll find out whether it’s worth your penny or not.

Poco F6 5G: Price, Availability

The Poco F6 5G will be available for Rs 29,999 for the 8GB + 256GB model, Rs 31,999 for the 12GB + 256GB model and Rs 33,999 for the 12GB + 512GB trim. The first sale for the handset will be held on May 29, 12PM IST via Flipkart.

For the first sale, users can avail an offer of Rs 2,000 on ICICI Bank cards and Rs 2,000 exchange bonus. Those who purchase the device on day 1 of sale will also get an extra 1 year warranty for the device apart from the regular 1 year which brands traditionally provide.

Poco F6 5G: Design & Display

Poco f6 design review

The Poco F6 5G comes in Titanium and Black shades, and we got the latter. The black model is definitely the one to get if you want a minimal yet stylish finish. It has this stealthy look with a matte finish and the POCO branding up top. Because of the all-plastic build, it doesn’t scream premium as such, but it doesn’t feel very cheap either.

The device is somewhat weighted, so it feels dense in the hand. In addition, the flat sides help provide a nice grip, and overall, the device is comfortable to hold. All the keys reside on the right and have a decent tactile feel, except for the volume-down key, which presses somewhat weirdly without a click feel at times. We think it’s an issue with our specific unit, but we aren’t sure.

Poco f6 keys

The overall design is better visible on the gold variant, but if you don’t want your smartphone to have a flashy or gaudy look, then the black one would give you all the minimalism you want. Poco says the handset is also IP64-rated, which is a nice addition to its already decent build quality.

The feel premium, too. They aren’t flagship level by any means, but they surely do not feel cheap, are strong enough, and complement the overall status of the handset. The stereo speakers are impressively loud and have a slight hint of bass. The stereo separation is well handled, and it was a treat to listen to music via the speakers or play games without wearing any earbuds.

As for the display, the Poco F6 5G gets a 6.7-inch (2712 x 1220 pixels) 1.5K 12-bit 20:9 display with a 120Hz refresh rate, 480Hz touch sampling rate, up to 2499 nits peak brightness, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, 2160Hz PWM Dimming, DC Dimming, protection.

Poco f6 display review

As the specs speak for themselves, this display is actually quite impressive in the real world, too. It has excellent brightness outdoors and reproduces vibrant colours rich with contrast, while the text and other content appear sharp. Watching videos on this display was the ultimate experience.

The viewing angles are decent, too, and the in-display fingerprint sensor also works without any issues. In fact, even the Netflix supports both HDR10 and Dolby Vision formats on Poco F6, which further makes it one of the best panels in its price range for consuming content.

Poco f6 netflix specifications

To top it all, the bezels on the Poco F6 5G are very slim which further allows for an immersive viewing experience. Overall, we can say we do not have a single complaint from this panel or the fingerprint sensor.

Poco F6 5G: Software & Performance

The Poco F6 5G has the latest Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 under the hood. It gets up to 12GB of LPDDR5x RAM and up to 512GB of 4.0 storage. The top-end model of the Poco F6 5G we received for review didn’t disappoint us in terms of performance. The device’s performance matches that of Snapdragon 8 Gen 3-powered devices in the real world.

The Poco F6 5G could run the games I tried at maximum graphics possible during the review, such as Call of Duty Mobile. While I didn’t face any sort of frame drops, the device did get warm to the touch after about 20 to 30 minutes of playing the game, which is quite normal considering the ambient temperatures, too.

Poco f6 game turbo

The Game Turbo function provides a plethora of gaming features. There’s a performance mode that lets you enable optimization to minimize or optimised touch controls to increase touch response while swiping or tapping. Game DND is also available, where certain system features can be disabled while playing a game, such as auto-brightness, reading mode, notification shade, and more.

You can further dive in deep to adjust features to prioritise what you need in a game, including picture quality, frame rate or performance. The visuals of a game can also be altered so you can choose the style that suits you the most, including one with richer contrast, one which is brighter and more. We have talked more in detail about the gaming features of the Poco F6 5G in a separate article, so make sure to check that one out as well.

Poco f6 hyperOS

In other aspects of the software, HyperOS, based on 14, didn’t disappoint in terms of performance. The animations were smooth, and there were no stutters across the system.

Poco f6 customisation

It is filled with features, such as various gestures, extensive lock screen customisation options, an image engine, themes, a number of Always-on display styles, app lock, dual apps, and much more. It also supports expansion up to 8GB.

Contactless gestures are also supported, where you can wave horizontally in front of the device to adjust playback progress and switch between songs, wave vertically to control media volume or switch between short videos, a double tap in the air to play or pause music playback or draw a circle to answer or end calls. As of now, the supported apps include Netflix and the Poco’s own Music app.

The quick settings shade looks quite similar to iOS, while the notification shade can be accessed by swiping to the right if the QS shade is open or by swiping down from the left area of the status bar. I personally prefer One UI’s or implementation, but there’s no way to switch to that here as Motorola offers with its Hello UI.

The software doesn’t come without its downsides, including various bugs that I encountered during the review of the Poco F6. At times, the navigation bar would just stick to the centre if I quit an app from the landscape orientation.

Poco F6 UI Bug

Aside from that, there were very minor stutters when closing an app or switching between them. Also, I do not like the fact that the battery settings do not show screen-on time due to which I had to rely on a third-party app and digital wellbeing feature.

Next up, it came with the March 2024 security patch out of the box and hasn’t been updated so far. Here, we would like to add that Poco has said the phone will get quarterly updates.

Poco f6 pre-installed bloatware

Finally, the bloatware situation is problematic too. One, there’s a lot of it, including apps like Block Puzzle, Bubble shooter, Crazy Juicer, Facebook, Netflix, LinkedIn, Opera and more. Two, not all of it is uninstallable. Applications like GetApps and Game Centre cannot be uninstalled or even disabled for that matter.

Overall, despite the shortcomings we mentioned, the Poco F6 5G still manages to impress in the software segment, thanks to the smooth animations, wide array of customisation options and a load of other features. It’s not only a power user’s or regular user’s phone, but is a gamer’s phone also.

Poco F6 5G: Battery backup

The Poco F6 5G packs a 5000mAh battery with 90W fast wired charging support. The company is bundling a 120W fast charger in the box which is again something quite impressive. The device took only 35 minutes to charge from 16% to 100% in our tests.

Poco f6 battery review

As for the backup, the Poco F6 5G easily lasted us a day with moderate use during the review, such as chatting, watching videos, browsing the web, calling, and scrolling social media.

Even with slightly heavier use, the Poco F6 5G lasted me around 15 hours with slightly above 6.5 hours of screen-on time. Add 120Hz gaming to the list of activities, and you’ll see the numbers dip. In my case, the screen-on time decreased by about 1.5 hours but it’s still quite decent.

Poco F6 5G: Cameras

Poco f6 5g camera review

The back features a 50MP main camera with a Sony IMX882 sensor (1.6μ pixels, f/1.59 aperture) and OIS. It is joined by an 8MP IMX355 ultrawide lens. The front has a 20MP f/2.2 camera for selfies and video calls.

The Poco F6 5G shoots decent photos outdoors with a natural colour tone. The photos have a high level of detailing, and the dynamic range is good, too. The colours could be slightly more vibrant, but those who prefer a more lifelike look would appreciate the image quality of the Poco F6 5G.

The shots from the ultra-wide-angle sensor suffer in terms of detailing, while the colours adopt a cooler tone than those from the main sensor. The distortion in shots could also be improved, but overall, these photos are acceptable, nothing more or nothing less.

Portrait photos exhibit average edge detection, which makes them somewhat inconsistent. However, the sharpness and colours in the photos are impressive.

The camera doesn’t disappoint under artificial lighting, either. The photos are nicely detailed, and even the dust particles are visible in the above photo if you zoom in. Not only that, but the colours look vibrant, too, and the photos stay rich with contrast.

Under low lighting, the quality of the photos takes a huge dip. The camera begins to struggle to focus on the subject, and the quality remains terrible. There’s slight noise in the photo while the detailing is below average too. There’s that smudgy effect in the photos which mainly ruins the shot.

Similar is the situation with night photos. Turning on does help marginally with the brightness but not with the sharpness of the shot at all.

Selfies have a warm tone, and the details in the photos aren’t the best. The edge detection in portrait selfies is better than the rear portraits. Finally, skin tones could also be better reproduced as they don’t really match the real-world skin tone.

New Nothing Phone (2a) Colour option coming soon: Leaked

0

Nothing debuted an India-exclusive Blue edition of its latest mid-ranger, the Phone (2a), in India a few weeks back. However, it seems like the brand has more in stores, as a new leak hints that Nothing will soon debut more colours of the Phone (2a), including a new shade such as the recent blue one along with the Community Edition of the device that would launch later.

The tip comes from Yogesh Brar on X, as per whom Nothing will soon launch the Phone (2a) in a new colour. After that, the device will be available in a total of four colours. Brar didn’t mention which colour it would be or when it would launch, but we can expect an announcement later next month. That’s because the tipster says that Nothing has the Phone (2a) Community Edition launch also lined up for July, which is separate from the new upcoming colour.

As of now, the Nothing Phone (2a) is available in black, white, and blue hues, with blue being an India-exclusive colour. It is possible that the upcoming colour of the Phone (2a) could be made exclusively for another region, but nothing has been confirmed so far, neither through leaks nor by the brand. Phone (2a) is the first smartphone where the brand has gone beyond launching just black and white shades of the product.

The winners of the community project edition who’ll help design a new hue of the Nothing Phone (2a) were announced earlier this month. The duo who made the Phone 2a concept: Phosphorescence were flown to London so they could collaborate with the Nothing team for the final product. Their version of the Phone (2a) uses materials that can glow in the dark.

“Using green-tinted phosphorescent material finishes, elements of the back of the phone emit a soft glow in the dark. This feature is purely analogue, requiring no power source, and can last for hours before gradually fading until it recharges by daylight. It is widely used in the watch industry. Like the fireflies, the glowing feature can also be functional, for example, locating your phone in the dark or indicating your presence.” Nothing was said while explaining the design materials of the Phosphorescence shade in a community post.

Google Password Manager Enables Password-Sharing For Family Groups: Details

0

Google announced earlier this year that, in a bid to make families stay safe and find the right balance with technology, it will be enabling the password-sharing feature via its own Manager so one can easily share their passwords with their loved ones. The feature is now rolling out as a part of a new Google Play Services update.

Google announced the roll out of password-sharing in Google Password Manager as part of its May 2024 Google Play Services update (v24.20) via a support page. “With this new feature, you can now securely share your passwords with your family group in Google Password Manager. When you share a password, your family members will receive a copy of it in their Google Password Manager, ready to be used,” read the announcement.

Note that the ability to share passwords via Google Password Manager is only available for family accounts. This means you cannot share your passwords with anyone outside the family group, even if they have a Google account. One can share usernames and passwords for a particular website or service directly from Password Manager.

“Whether two members of a family are coordinating with daycare through a single account, or a child is letting a parent access their school assignments, sharing passwords securely has never been easier,” read the announcement post from Google back in February this year.

Meanwhile, Google is also prepping new security-centric features that will rollout later this year to devices running Android 10+. For instance, in case your device gets stolen, Google will be introducing “Theft Detection Lock” in Android for maintaining data security. Theft Detection Lock is a new feature that uses Google AI to sense if someone snatches your phone from your hand and tries to run, bike or drive away. If a common motion associated with theft is detected, your phone screen quickly locks – which helps keep thieves from easily accessing your data.
