CMF Buds Pro 2 Review: How Smart is The Smart Dial?

CMF By Nothing is back again with a set of new launches, one of which is the CMF Buds Pro 2, the successor to last year’s CMF Buds Pro. The new earbuds offer significant upgrades over last year’s version, but are they truly worth their price tag of Rs 4,299? We’ll have an answer for you by the end of this review of the CMF Buds Pro 2.

Design & Comfort

The CMF Buds Pro 2 have a design quite similar to that of the CMF Buds that came out a few months back and even the CMF Buds Pro, which debuted last year. The buds fit quite well in the ear with no discomfort at all.

Cmf buds pro 2 review

They create an effective seal to reduce sound leakage. Even during workouts involving running, the buds stayed snug inside my ear. They are also IP-rated, meaning you won’t have to worry about them getting wet.

CMF Buds Pro 2 Case

The case has undergone changes. Firstly, it is now smaller in size than the CMF Buds and has a more rubberized matte finish. While the shape and size remain identical, the CMF Logo is now better visible in the lower right corner. The USB-C port is on the right side of the case.

Cmf buds pro 2 earbuds

The hinge feels stern and durable when you open or shut the case. The magnets used are strong enough to keep the buds in place even when the case is opened.

Cmf buds pro 2 smart dial

The dial at the top left corner is now functional, moving away from being solely an aesthetic factor on the CMF Buds, which can be used for the lanyard. Instead, the lanyard attachment has been completely removed this time around. I’ll discuss the dial in the later part of the review.

Overall, the fit, finish, and quality of the CMF Buds Pro 2 are top-notch.

Audio Quality, Call Quality, ANC Performance

The CMF Buds Pro 2 audio signature is driven by 11mm + 6mm dual drivers. In songs with prominent kicks, such as Karan Aujla’s latest, “Tauba Tauba,” the bass shines through. You’ll feel each beat in your ears with high vibration, which will appeal to bass lovers.

The overall audio signature is similar to that of the CMF Buds, but thanks to LDAC codec support and enhanced drivers, it has more depth and sounds better. They could have definitely been louder on for like Spotify or YouTube Music but on contrary while playing Appple music they are amazing.

Interestingly, to know the buds’ true potential, one has to use them with Apple Music. As it supports lossless streaming, when paired with the LDAC codec, the audio gets much louder and has better depth and details. The mid-range frequencies are slightly more prominent than higher-range frequencies. The vocals still sound clear, while stereo separation is quite well done, too.

The Dirac Opteo equalizer preset continues its association with CMF Buds, but it still isn’t tuned well, and I still wouldn’t keep it as my go-to setting for tuning the audio. It brings a slight echo to the sound while tuning down the bass. The mid-range frequencies become more prominent than they already are, resulting in slightly muffled audio.

Further, note that one cannot keep both LDAC and Dirac Opteo equalizer running simultaneously. LDAC has to be turned off to keep Dirac Opteo, but I wouldn’t suggest doing that considering it’s an unworthy tradeoff, given your phone supports the LDAC codec.

Talking of bass, if the stock settings aren’t enough for you, then you can further turn on “Ultra Bass” for a maddening experience. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s a treat for those who prefer a bassy signature.

CMF gives you three metrics you can tune as part of equalizer customisation: Bass, mid, and Treble. In addition to Dirac Opteo, there are five more presets you can choose from based on your preferences.

The connection quality was impressive, too, thanks to v5.3. There were no glitches or breaks in the audio.

Next, there’s the spatial audio effect borrowed from the CMF Neckband. Like the neckband, it makes the sound louder and introduces a slight echo effect. While it’s nothing revolutionary, you might prefer it turned on if you want your buds to sound louder.

CMF Buds pro 2 ANC

ANC performance remains similar to what we saw with CMF Buds but is slightly upgraded. With up to 50dB noise cancellation, the ANC capabilities of the CMF Buds Pro 2 are excellent, too. You can choose from four noise-cancelling modes, including Adaptive, low, mid, and high, which decide the effectiveness of the noise cancellation.

While high-pitched noises, such as the humming noise of the fan above me, couldn’t be canceled out the best, sounds on the lower end of the spectrum are canceled out nicely. Traffic noises are well handled by the buds, and at higher volumes, you can fully immerse yourself in the music. You really feel the seal it creates when ANC is turned on, which is a good trait.

The performance of the transparency mode is slightly better than that of CMF Buds, but it still isn’t up to the mark, in my opinion. It enhances ambient sounds to some extent but not entirely, which still results in a significantly muffled sound of your surroundings when the mode is in use.

There are 6 mics paired with Clear Voice Technology 2.0 that handle call quality. The call quality of the CMF Buds Pro 2 is good. While it can pick up some background noise at times, it mostly handles the wearer’s voice without any hiccups. It transmits the wearer’s voice clearly and with minimal background voice.

The buds’ batteries are claimed to last up to 25 hours with the case and up to 6.5 hours on a single charge. These stats are with ANC turned on. The case has a 460mAh battery, while the buds each have a 60mAh cell.

While I couldn’t get up to 6 hours, I got close to 5 hours and because I was listening at high volume, LDAC enabled, and max ANC, I feel it’s a decent number. There was a minor issue where the battery of each earbud would deplete differently, as per what was shown to me via the Nothing X app. If it’s a firmware issue, it should be fixed soon with an update.

The maximum you can get, as per CMF, is with codec and ANC turned off. Numbers can go as high as 43 hours with a case and 11 hours with buds only. These numbers are quite respectable, and you can easily achieve results that are nearly identical, if not exact.

Features, App support, Smart Dial

The CMF Buds Pro 2 is feature-loaded to the brim. Apart from the audio customisation we mentioned above, it has a bunch of additional features, too. You get wear detection, so the buds pause the music automatically when you take them out of your ear and resume it when you wear them again.

Then there’s a low-lag mode for gaming scenarios that works well and notably minimizes audio latency. The ear tip fit test lets you know how well the earbuds fit in your ears and whether you should replace the ear tip for a bigger or smaller size.

Find my earbuds feature plays a loud sound through the buds in case you lose them. Firmware updates for the buds are also supported via the Nothing X app.

The buds also support dual connections, so you can connect two devices to the TWS earbuds simultaneously. This feature worked without any issues during my testing.

The buds feature the regular touch controls, including double tap, triple tap, tap and hold, and double tap and hold. They can be customized via the app itself for play/pause, skip back or skip forward, voice assistant, and volume control action.

Talking about the elephant in the room, the customisable dial on the case, this can also be customized via the app. The dial can be single-pressed, double-pressed, triple-pressed, press and hold, or rotated for volume control. These controls can also be assigned to the same list of actions available for the buds and the ability to hang up or accept calls.

This dial will work even if you use only one of the buds, which is quite impressive. You can even turn off the smart dial temporarily to prevent accidental actions by double pressing and holding it when the buds are outside the case, and it is closed. You can re-enable it similarly, or by  the charging case. Whenever you disable or enable the smart dial, a voice prompt in the earbuds will inform you that you did it.

As we mentioned before, the buds are filled with unique features, not only in their respective segments but also in the general category of TWS earbuds.

Now, in comparison to a display that comes equipped on some TWS earbuds’ cases nowadays, this dial is more intuitive, but it can be argued that a display is more useful due to the amount of information it shows.

However, we aren’t questioning ;trather, we are questioning but the presence of the smart dial in general. In all of my use cases, I had the phone itself with me so I could easily control all the functions the dial does via the phone instead of the case. Even when my phone was in my pocket, so was the case and at times, the case was in my bag, which means there was no instance where I found carrying the case in my hand, convenient.

As if that weren’t enough, the buds themselves can control every action the dial on the case can, which defeats the purpose of the dial and makes carrying the case in hand an inconvenience.

We are not sure of the dial’s exact purpose. Maybe it was meant to be a useful hardware element, which, in our opinion, it is not. Or, it was implemented to change user behaviour so wearers could use the case to control the playback and other actions.

Whatever the case may be, we feel the dial does add a touch of elegance to the case paired with additional features for which it can be used, but it fails to replace the existing methods we use to control the earbud actions.

For instance, the dial served a purpose on the CMF Neckband, where it was the sole method to control the playback if you didn’t want to use your phone, but on the CMF Buds Pro 2, it’s trying hard to find a purpose. You may use it occasionally for the sake of it, but in my case, at least, it is a forgettable element.

Boult Klarity 1 TWS Earbuds Review: Should You Buy It?

Boult is a known name in the audio industry in India. It makes affordable earbuds, one of which is the Boult Klarity 1, the latest offering from the brand priced at Rs 1,299. Here’s a review of the new earbuds coming from the house of Boult.

Design & Comfort

Boult klarity 1 review

The Boult Klarity 1 adopts a unique hour-glass inspired form factor with a liquid metal design. The black model we got has a glossy lid that opens upwards and is quite rigid as well, something I haven’t seen much in earbuds costing this much. However, it’s still all plastic. The bottom half has a black matte finish.

The front also has a circular white light which lights up when you insert the earbuds for charging. Once you open the case, the earbuds sit upright in the case with magnets holding them in place. These magnets feel strong as well.

The earbuds themselves sport a distinct look with a glossy finish. They definitely look attractive when worn, and the comfort is on par, too. While they didn’t fit snugly into my ear on the first try, they created a good seal after some adjustment. The buds are also IPX5 rated, which means a few splashes or sweat shouldn’t hurt them.

Overall, I was quite satisfied with the design and comfort of the Boult Kwality 1. It looks modern, feels comfortable, and, thanks to its trendy design, should also appeal to Gen Z.

Sound Quality & Features

The Boult Kwality 1’s sound quality depends on 13mm drivers, and it also supports and SBC codecs. They connect wirelessly via v5.4, and because of that, I didn’t face any connectivity issues.

The buds pack “Klarity Sound Signature” and “BoomX technology” for enhanced bass. The bass is evident, and you can feel the thump in each beat. The vocals are decently clear but not the best, as the mid-range frequencies overshadow most of the others. Because of that, the overall sound signature is quite muddy. Even after tweaking the equalizer settings, I couldn’t make the vocals sound clear enough.

It further supports touch controls for play/pause and skip forward or backward commands. You can also pick up calls with a tap gesture. These controls worked without any issues during my testing of the earbuds.

Boult klarity 1 review

Next, the buds support multipoint connectivity to connect to two devices simultaneously. The feature worked mostly during the review, but the switching between devices was sometimes glitchy. If I were playing music on one device and received a call on the other, the buds wouldn’t let me hear the call and I had to use the phone itself to proceed with the call. It didn’t even notify me of an incoming call on the second device.

The earbuds are claimed to offer a battery life of up to 80 hours paired with the case which is an impressive number. In my testing, the buds could easily last several hours in one go and didn’t require a charge for the case before a week.

Then, you get quad mics with Environmental Noise Cancellation support for calls. Call quality on the buds was below average. The other person couldn’t understand some of my words because of the echo effect. It did pick up a decent amount of background noise as well and the volume of my voice also sounded low on the other hand.

Google Weather Adds Dates To 10-day Weather Forecast Section

0

With rising uncertainties in the weather conditions across the world, it’s always a good idea to plan your schedule in advance so you can carry an umbrella if needed on a particular day. Google helps you do so by showing a 10-day forecast via its Google Weather service which has now been improved as it now shows the dates alongside the day of the week.

As spotted by 9to5Google, Google Weather now shows the days and dates for an easier glance as the weather forecast. This update, as per the publication, has been rolled out with Google app 12.25. Since the 2023 redesign, Google Weather has seen no major updates.

The app, until now, showed only the day of the week, such as “Today, Tuesday, Wednesday, etc.” Now, the format has been changed to include the date, and the weather forecast is now shown as ““Today”, “Monday, Jul 8,” “Tuesday, Jul 9,” etc.” While the change is minor, it’s surely a notable one that increases the convenience for the user.

In news related to Google, the brand will be unveiling its Pixel 9 series of smartphones next month, on August 13. While the devices have been leaked extensively in the past, a new report says that the Pixel 9 will use an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, with the specific unit being Qualcomm’s 3D Sonic Gen 2 (QFS4008) — the same exact model that has also been equipped inside the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.

In comparison to an optical sensor, which shines a bright light on the sensor so it can read your print, an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor relies on inaudible sound waves to read a finger‘s valleys and ridges and then create a reproduction of the scanned fingerprint.

Reliance Jio Launches True Unlimited Upgrade 5G Data Plans Starting From Rs 51

0

Reliance Jio has announced the launch of three new True Unlimited Upgrade plans post the recent tariff hike. The three new plans aim to offer unlimited 5G data to the existing roster of plans that removed support for it with the price hike. Here are all the details about the new data plans.

Jio restricted unlimited 5G to prepaid recharge plans with 2GB/day data or above when it raised the prices of its plans. In other words, if you had a 1.5GB/day plan, you wouldn’t get unlimited 5G support. Now, with the three new True Unlimited Upgrade 5G plans, this limitation is no longer an issue, as you can get unlimited 5G data even with plans that have 1.5GB/day.

The base Rs 51 plan offers 3GB of high-speed internet on the exhaustion of which the speed will drop to 64Kbps. However, if you have a 5G-enabled device, you can get unlimited 5G with this plan. The plan validity will be the same as your active base plan. For instance, if you have recharged with Rs 799 plan with 84-day validity, the validity of the Rs 51 upgrade plan will also be 84 days and then you can use unlimited 5G data for that period.

Next up is the Rs 101 plan, where customers get 6GB of high-speed 4G data. The speed will come down to 64kbps once the FUP limit is exhausted. Again, there’s support for unlimited 5G data, given your device supports 5G. The plan validity remains the same as your base plan.

Finally, the third plan costs Rs 151 and gives you 9GB of 4G data. Rest of the features of the plan remain the same as other two, including validity period and unlimited 5G data.

Notably, these 3 plans are not compatible with value plans with aggregate data like Rs 189, Rs 479 and Rs 1,899 plans. Further, as of writing this article, the Jio True Unlimited Upgrade 5G plans are available only on the operator’s website, which is, Jio.com. It’s unclear as to when these will become available on the MyJio and other third-party apps.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 Retains AMOLED Cover Display, Won’t Downgrade to IPS

0

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and the Z Flip 6 are all set to debut two days from now, that is, on July 10. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 has been leaked extensively in the past and a recent leak suggested that it would come with an IPS cover display and not an AMOLED panel. However, a new report confirms that the information isn’t true.

Sammobile has confirmed via its sources close to the development of the Galaxy Z Flip 6 that the foldable smartphone will come with an AMOLED cover display, same as its predecessors, and not an IPS LCD panel. The leak which wrongly highlighted the IPS LCD cover display came from Evan Blass on X, where he shared the official specifications sheet of the handset. Sammobile says that the “Samsung employee that created that leaked spec sheet made a typo.”

If Samsung had switched to an IPS LCD panel, it would have been a major downgrade considering the Flip 3, Flip 4, and the Flip 5 came with an AMOLED cover display. AMOLED panels have their own benefits over LCD panels, making them not only brighter but also rich with colours that have higher contrast, along with deep blacks.

As for other leaked specs, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 will get a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED foldable main display. It has a 2640 x 1080 pixels resolution, 22:9 aspect ratio and an adaptive Refresh Rate ranging from 1Hz up till 120Hz.

This phone will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy SoC with 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 comes with a dual-camera setup on the back. It includes a 12-megapixel f/1.8 sensor with OIS and a 12-megapixel f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle lens. On the inside, it gets a 10-megapixel f/2.2 front-facing sensor.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 will pack a 4000mAh battery. It’ll charge at 25W speeds with a wired charger, and supports fast wireless charging 2.0 along with reverse wireless charging as well.

Connectivity options will include 5G, LTE, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth v5.3, NFC, and a USB Type-C port for charging. The Z Flip 6 runs on One UI 6.1.1 based on Android 14 and will get 7 years of major OS upgrades and security patches. There is a side-mounted fingerprint scanner for biometric authentication, along with stereo speakers for audio. The device will be IPX8 rated also.

Airtel Refutes Data Breach Claims, confirms Data is 100% Secure

Bharti Airtel, one of India’s leading telecom operators, has denied reports of a significant data breach that allegedly exposed the personal information of 375 million customers. This statement comes in response to online rumours suggesting a hack by a China-based threat actor.

According to the online claims, the cyber attack resulted in the theft of customer data, including Aadhaar numbers, which were purportedly put up for sale. However, Airtel has firmly rejected these allegations. An Airtel spokesperson told The Mobile Indian, “Based on our preliminary investigation, we can confirm that there has been no data breach whatsoever of Airtel’s system.” The spokesperson further stated, “Airtel is well-prepared to handle such incidents, and the recent reports alleging a data breach of our user base are false.”

The Mobile Indian has spoken to a few security experts, and they have supported Airtel’s stance, noting that the likelihood of such a hack is minimal. They highlighted that the Aadhaar numbers collected by Airtel are now masked, meaning only the last four digits of the ID card are visible and stored in the telecom operator’s database, thus enhancing the security of the information.

Airtel Implements Tariff Hike for Prepaid Customers

In a separate development, Bharti Airtel has announced a tariff increase for its prepaid customers. The new plans, which took effect on July 3, reflect the company’s need to boost its Average Revenue per User (ARPU) to over ₹300. This increase is deemed necessary to sustain a financially viable business model for Indian telecom companies.

Airtel emphasized that achieving this ARPU level is crucial for making substantial investments in network technology and spectrum and ensuring a return on capital. The company reassured customers that the entry-level plans will experience only a modest price hike, amounting to less than 70 paise per day, to minimize the impact on budget-conscious consumers.
