Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) is reportedly mulling to remove the 50 per cent spectrum holding rules, according to The Economic Times.
Bharti Airtel has so far objected to this rule saying this could lead to monopoly. Trai however contends that this will give a lot of flexibility to telcos who then can offer better services.
At present, rules say that a teleco cannot have more than 25 per cent of spectrum in a circle or above 50 per cent in a spectrum band.
If implemented, this will particularly help Vodafone and Idea as the two are working on a merger. Also, it will help Reliance Jio as it is trying to acquire more spectrum in the 850 MHz band, the report added.
Trai is expected to give its recommendations to DoT by the month end which will turn send it to the Cabinet for final approval.
