Slowdown: mobile user base up by just 1% in Dec

There are only 646.77 million active subscribers in contrast to 926.53 million connections.

Telecom operators added 9.47 million mobile subscribers in December last year, taking the total telephone user base in the country to 926.53 million.

According to TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India), the overall teledensity (telephones per 100 people) in India reached 76.86 per cent. However, there are only 646.77 million active subscribers compared to 626.73 million in the month of October, a rise of close to 3 per cent.

The number of requests from subscribers to change their operators under the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) facility also increased to 29.24 million in December as against 25.83 million in November.

Karnataka received over 2.83 million requests for MNP which was highest among all telecom circles. Surprisingly high number of requests also came from Rajasthan (close to 2.4 million) which in terms of percentage is the highest amongst the different circles.

The growth in the wireless category was by Idea Cellular, which added 2.38 million new users in December, taking its subscriber base to 106.38 million. It is followed by Uninor with net addition of 2.12 million taking its total to 36.30 million.

The country’s largest operator, Airtel added 9,60,143 users, which is almost same to its November quota. Reliance Communications and Vodafone added less number of new subscribers in December compared to previous month.

RCom and Vodafone added 0.94 million and 0.9 million new subscribers during the month compared to 1.01 million and 0.92 million they added in November.

State-owned telcos, BSNL and MTNL added 0.75 million and 34,143 new users respectively in December. Their subscriber base stood at 96.76 million and 5.68 million, respectively.

Tata Teleservices, Aircel, Sistema Shyam added 0.1 million, 0.68 million and 0.51 million respectively in the month.
