OYO goes Lite with an 800KB-sized app

OYO Lite takes up just under 1MB of space on a user’s smartphones, 800KB to be precise and offers all the functionalities of the main app. The Lite app is designed to work in low connectivity areas or areas with low networks. The app is currently available for download across the globe through the Google Play Store on Android.

Several companies recently are developing apps for users with Go and budget phones and now OYO has done the same. The leading leased and franchised hotels chain has announced that it’s launching a new app, aptly named OYO Lite, which will be a lighter version of the original OYO app.

OYO Lite takes up just under 1MB of space on a user’s smartphones, 800KB to be precise and offers all the functionalities of the main app. The Lite app is designed to work in low connectivity areas or areas with low networks.

OYO joins a list of service providers and app developers who have released Lite versions of their apps in the past year. Uber announced its 5MB-sized Uber Lite ride-hailing app which was followed up by Twitter and Instagram, each rolling out their Lite versions of their social media platforms.

Earlier this year, Mozilla and Google both unveiled Firefox Lite and Chrome Lite pages respectively for users with budget phones. Music streaming service Spotify also rolled out the Spotify Lite this week which is currently in beta stage in India.

Coming back to OYO, the hotels chain has also stressed on the recently launched in-app SOS button which has been embedded inside the app to enable guests to receive assistance when in an emergency situation. Help will be provided to users with the on-ground hotel staff as well as OYO’s own Safety Response Team (SRT) and local law enforcement authorities.

Speaking about the latest launch, OYO Hotels and Homes Chief Technology Officer, Anil Goel said “The Lite app is a step forward in that direction and will enable travellers to make last minute travel plans without worrying about network and availability of quality accommodations at the tap of a button. With security, quality, location and price being key considerations for a majority of travellers in the budget to mid-scale segment, OYO aims to help create a perfect space in every place by solving for each of the said considerations through a combination of technology and on-ground interventions”.

Goel added “OYO Lite has also been designed as a solution to key problems users face – connectivity and space/storage constraints on phones. We feel that this product would be ideal for travellers who are remotely connected to the internet as well as those with basic smartphones”.

OYO Lite is currently available for download across India and other markets through the Google on Android phones.
