Idea reduces 2G tariffs by 90%

Idea has recently become the third largest operator in the country, replacing Reliance Communication.

Just a couple of days after Vodafone indicated a rise in 2G data tariffs, Idea Cellular has turned up the heat by slashing 2G data tariffs by as much as 90 per cent.

Idea has reduced 2G data tariff by up to 90 per cent across all 22 circles, enabling users to avail 2G data at just 2 paise per 10 KB. The revised tariff will be effective from Friday (November 15).

Idea, which has just recently became the 3rd largest telecom operator in the country replacing Reliance Communication, has also said that its users will now be able to save upto 30 per cent on their monthly data charges as the same tariff will also be available across all 10 Idea 3G circles, namely – Maharashtra & Goa, Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh, Kerala, UP West and East, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh.

Speaking on the tariff revision, Ambrish Jain, deputy managing director, Idea Cellular said, “The reduction in data tariff is aimed at catalysing the data adoption amongst the masses and empowering them with the power of mobile internet at an affordable cost.”

Recently, Vodafone India’s managing director and chief executive officer Marten Pieters in an interview said that mobile tariffs are set to increase every year due to inflation. He also indicated that his company may increase 2G data rates to match it with 3G data tariffs.
