Xiaomi Redmi Go: Everything you should know

Xiaomi will be launching its first Android Go smartphone - Redmi Go in India on March 19.

Price and Availability

Redmi Go smartphone was announced earlier this year inthe Philippines andwas priced at PHP 3,990 (roughly Rs. 5,400).

It is expected that the smartphone will be priced at around Rs 4,500 in India.Android Go, also known as Android Oreo (Go edition), is a stripped-down version of Android designed to run on entry-level smartphones.

Storage and Processor

Redmi Go has 1GB RAM. There is 8GB of internal storage, which can further be expanded up to 128GB with a card slot. It is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 quad-core 1.4GHz backed by Adreno 308 GPU.

Most of the Android Go Smartphones have either 512 MG or 1GB and 8/16 Internal memory.

Display and Design

Redmi Go smartphone features a 5-inch screen with 1280 x 720 resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio, 296 PPI and 1000 contrast ratio.

The phone has a sleek design and metallic casing. With a high screen-to-body ratio and ultra-thin design, it’s light enough to be held in one hand. We are not sure about the screen visibility in bright sunlight but feel that it would be average.

Security

The phone does not feature security options like fingerprint sensor and face unlock.

It will use pin and pattern lock for securing the phone. Doesn’t that remind of smartphones that were launched2-3 years back

Connectivity Features

Connectivity options for the phone will include support, 4G, Wi-Fi, 4.1, and a micro-USB port.

The phone features a triple slot i.e Nano-SIM + Nano-SIM + microSD card that can be expanded. Two networks cannot be used together. When using two SIM cards, only one will support 4G.

Battery

It is backed up by 3,000mAh battery which the company claims to offer 10 days of standby time.

Software

Redmi Go runs on Google’s Android 8.1 Oreo (Go Edition) and comes pre-installed with customised apps like Gmail Go, Assistant Go, Maps Go, etc.

For the unintended, Google announced its ambitious Android Oreo Go edition. The Go edition was first announced at Google I/O 2017 and it meant for low-end devices that run with 512MB to 1GB of memory.

The Android Go edition is specially optimized for the entry-level handsets and it includes better performance along with built-in data management features and security benefits. Google has also designed a new set of Google apps including includes Google Go, Google Assistant Go, YouTube Go, Google Maps Go, Gmail Go, Gboard, Google Play, Chrome, and the new Files Go app, which are meant to be lighter and it will smoother on the entry-level devices.

Sensors on board include Light sensor, Proximity sensor, Accelerometer.

Camera

In the camera department, there is an 8-megapixel rear camera with flash support, 1.12 micron pixels, 4-element lens, ƒ / 2.0. The rear camera has various features like Auto-focus HDR, Continuous photo mode (Burst), Countdown timer, Manual mode, real-time filters and smart scene mode.

The phone has a 5-megapixel front camera with 1.12micron pixels large, 3-element lens, ƒ / 2.2 aperture, HDR and selfie timer.
