Google is Adding Support for Third-Party Autofill Services in Chrome for Android

0

Google is the default autofill service on Chrome, providing passwords, passkeys and autofill for other information like addresses and payment data. However, as many users prefer other services over Google’s, the company is finally adding support for third-party autofill services in for Android.

As announced in an Android developers blog post, Google will soon allow third-party autofill services in Chrome for Android to natively autofill forms on websites. Developers of these services need to tell their users to toggle a setting in Chrome to continue using their service with Chrome. These services could include the likes of third-party managers, like Bitwarden, Dashlane, LastPass, and more.

A third-party password manager can be set as the preferred autofill service on Android through System Settings. The preferred autofill service can fill across all Android apps. However, to autofill forms on Chrome, the autofill service needs to use “compatibility mode”. This causes glitches on Chrome such as janky page scrolling and potentially showing duplicate suggestions from Google and a third-party.

With this coming change, Chrome on Android will allow third-party autofill services to natively autofill forms giving users a smoother and simpler user experience. Third-party autofill services can autofill passwords, passkeys and other information like addresses and payment data, as they would in other Android apps.

You can already test the functionality on Chrome 131 and later. First, set a third-party autofill service as preferred in Android 14, then follow the steps below (as seen on a Google device, steps will vary on each device):

  • Open Android’s System Settings
  • Select Passwords, passkeys & accounts
  • Tap on Change button under Preferred service
  • Select a preferred service
  • Confirm changing the preferred autofill service

Secondly, enable third-party autofill service on Chrome

  • Open Chrome on Android
  • Open chrome://flags#enable-autofill-virtual-view-structure
  • Set the flag to “Enabled” and restart
  • Open Chrome’s Settings and tap Autofill Services
  • Choose Autofill using another service
  • Confirm and restart Chrome

You can emulate how Chrome behaves after compatibility mode is disabled by updating chrome://flags#suppress-autofill-via-accessibility to Enabled. Implementation wise, Google says that autofill service developers don’t need an additional implementation as long as they have a proper integration with autofill services. “Chrome will gracefully respect it and autofill forms,” said the company.

Chrome plans to stop supporting compatibility mode in early 2025. Users must select Autofill using another service in Chrome settings to ensure their autofill experience is unaffected. The new setting is available in Chrome 131, which will rollout to stable users beginning November 12. Until then, you can try out how support for Third-Party Autofill Services in Chrome works in the beta app by following the steps mentioned above.

0

Google has announced the release of October Pixel drop and Android 15 for Pixel smartphones, bringing a ton of new enhancements and features to Google’s smartphones. Here’s everything new you can expect in these Android-based updates from Google.

October Pixel Drop: What’s New?

Google has renamed Feature Drop to Pixel Drop, where these drops will contain updates across your Pixel devices on an ongoing basis. You can now access Gemini on all Pixel Buds models. Whether you have Pixel Buds Pro, Pixel Buds A-Series or the original Pixel Buds, you can talk to Gemini to get walking directions, ask for info from your emails, or communicate with Gemini Live. One can say “Hey Google, let’s talk” to start a conversation. And Gemini Live is now widely available for all Pixel users, free of charge. Google Live is also expanding to new languages.

Next, Gemini integration with Pixel Screenshots app is now also live. You can use Gemini to help you find something you saved in Pixel Screenshots, from wherever you are on your phone. All you have to do is long press power and ask Gemini to “find the brand of sneakers I saved in Screenshots” and Gemini will take you to the screenshot you were looking for.

Audio Magic Eraser has also been updated with new editing capabilities that let you turn specific sounds up or down, and separate voices to independently change their volumes, making the audio in your videos even clearer. This feature is now available on Pixel 8 and newer phones.

October Pixel drop features

Underwater photography mode is now also live in the Camera app in Pixel phones. One can now use any waterproof case to capture your favorite under-the-sea moments, like snorkeling or swimming, with improved underwater photography and video recording that makes colors look richer and more accurate.

In the October Pixel Drop, you’ll soon be able to access the astrophotography feature in the Night Sight slider. For that, tap the Night Sight icon, slide to Astro, and press the shutter button. You’ll have 5 seconds to set the phone down facing the sky. Alongside, Night Sight for Instagram now lets you take clear, true-to-life nighttime and low-light pics without a flash in the Instagram app itself.

The Thermometer app on Pixel 8 Pro now lets you use your camera to help target exactly what you want to measure. Use the viewfinder to get live temperature readings on almost any surface, and save the results to reference them later.

The Pixel Weather app has also been updated, where it is introducing a pollen tracker so you can check current pollen index levels, pollen types and forecasts before stepping outside. Additionally, the new Pixel Weather App is expanding to more Pixel phones, bringing helpful features like AQI and humidity levels to more devices.

Then, when you long press the home screen to customize how it looks, you’ll get recommendations for categories of widgets, like Social or Entertainment, and a preview of how they’ll look on your home screen.

Call Screen is getting an upgrade in the UK and Japan. A more human-sounding voice can talk to the caller and show you what they’re saying in real time, helping you decide if you want to pick up. Additionally, Google is bringing improved replies to the UK so you can respond to things like appointment confirmations and reservations without having to answer the phone.

Theft Detection Lock, which began rolling out a few days back, is also a part of the October Pixel Drop. It uses Google AI and the phone’s motion to detect if someone snatches your phone from your hand and tries to run, bike or drive away and can automatically lock your phone screen. You can also use Remote Lock to quickly lock your phone using any device with just your phone number and a quick security challenge, giving you more time to recover your accounts.

Google is also making it easier for your phone to automatically adjust the vibration intensity of ringtones, notifications and alerts. This way, you can hear your phone in noisy environments and not be interrupted in quiet spaces like a library or an office.

Aside from these updates, Android 15 is also rolling out to eligible Pixel smartphones. New features of Android 15 include App pairs, Private Space, better Passkeys integration, support for 16kb pages, widget previews, Better Multitasking For Bigger Screens, and more.

Your Pixel phone and Pixel Tablet now work together to make it easier to manage notifications. When you dismiss a notification on one device, it will disappear from your other devices. To get this experience, you need to enable the feature in settings and be connected to Wi-Fi.

With the home panel screensaver, you can now easily access controls for your smart home devices and camera feeds while the tablet is idle and charging. Plus, you can now share pics right from the digital photo frame and choose from new clock designs.

YouTube’s New Features: Improved Mini Player, Redesigned YouTube App on TV, Sleep Timer, and More

0

YouTube has detailed some of its new features across the type of devices where its is available, including an improved mini player, a redesigned YouTube app on TV, QR code-based collaboration for YouTube playlists, and much more. Here’s everything you can expect as a part of YouTube’s new features.

The new set of features in YouTube includes fine-tunable playback speed, allowing for adjustments in 0.05 increments. You’ll also find improved browsing in landscape with greater responsiveness, and larger thumbnails and bigger text, with the change coming to later this year. Additionally, some visual improvements across YouTube are aimed at simplifying the app.

Starting today, these updates are rolling out across web, mobile, TVs, and YouTube Music.

YouTube’s upcoming new features also include an improved mini player which we spotted a few months ago. Viewers will be able to resize and move the miniplayer in the YouTube mobile app. “It’s perfect for those that love to search for more videos to add to their queues while already watching a video,” said the streaming platform in a blog post.

Next, users will be able to invite others to collaborate using a special link, or — coming soon to TV — use a QR code for easy additions to a playlist. YouTube is also introducing new customization tools to give playlists a “personal touch.” Users can design their own custom thumbnails for playlists using their own photos or create new ones with generative AI.

To build a custom thumbnail, one can choose an image from your camera roll, and personalize it with text, filters, or stickers. To generate a thumbnail with AI, tap “Create with AI,” pick a theme, and choose from the AI-powered creations.

These updates are coming across mobile, web, TVs, and YouTube Music.

Beginning later this year, users will be able to vote on videos in playlists. It also allows for further interaction with creators: a creator could use this feature to have their viewers rank their favorite unboxings or reviews.

A Sleep Timer has been introduced which lets users set a timer to automatically pause videos after a certain duration of time. We tested this feature with our Premium members earlier this year to rave reviews. And we’re now excited to make it available to all our users on YouTube across mobile devices.

Coming in the next several weeks, YouTube is bringing badges to the YouTube and YouTube Music apps on mobile devices. It is starting with a few at launch, with badges that celebrate unique-to-YouTube milestones, such as being one of the first set of paid members of a creator’s channel, or correctly completing quizzes. Users can even earn badges for being a top listener of their favorite artist or having a creator heart your comment. The collected badges can be seen in the “You” tab.

Revamped YouTube app on TV

A revamped YouTube app on TV is also incoming. The new touches give everything a more cinematic feel, as per YouTube. The visual changes rolling out on web and mobile will also come to the YouTube app on TV. YouTube describes these changes as new “pops of pink, as well as other light touches” that will add dynamism to the YouTube.

And finally, when watching Shorts on TV, a new UI offers continued interaction with the content. Whether it’s reading comments or browsing the shop, you can do it all without interrupting the viewing experience.
