Xiaomi developing 120Hz display, 5X telephoto camera for smartphones

Xiaomi is working on two new technologies for smartphones - a 120Hz display and a 5X telephoto camera.

Last month, Xiaomi introduced the Mi Mix Alpha smartphone with the first-of-its-kind 4D surround display and 108MP rear camera. But from the looks of it, Xiaomi is now developing more new technologies for smartphones, two of which have been spotted online including a 120Hz display and a 5X telephoto camera.

The folks at XDA Developers have spotted a case in a beta build of MIUI 11. The code points out that Xiaomi has added a new display setting to its interface with entries – 60Hz and 120Hz as options. It’s thus likely that Xiaomi could finally make the switch by launching a smartphone with a 120Hz display.

Till date, 120Hz displays have been features on Razer Phones and ASUS ROG Phone II. The OnePlus 7 Pro and OnePlus 7T, in comparison, have a display with 90Hz refresh rate.

Xiaomi has also been found to be developing a smartphone with a 5X zoom telephoto camera which can also zoom in digitally to up to 50X. Another code uncovered by XDA Developers shows a new “Tele 5X” camera mode on MIUI 11 and another “ultra tele” mode whose descriptions reads “50X zoom”.

Xiaomi, however, won’t be the first to launch a 50X digital zoom lens as Huawei launched the P30 Pro earlier this year with 5X optical zoom and 50X digital zoom. Oppo also sells the Reno 10X Zoomwith 50X digital zoom and 10X hybrid optical zoom.

For now, it’s unclear if the two new features will be available on different phones or just one but we can expect Xiaomi to drop some hints in the coming weeks.
