MediaTek S900 chipset will power next-generation 8K TVs

The MediaTek S900 comprises of an ARM Cortex-A73 cores and multi-core Mali-G52 GPU and support for external graphics to help users customise their products. The chipset features 8K video decoding at 60Hz, 4K videos running at 120Hz and HDR10+ content support.

MediaTek has quietly launched the MediaTek S900 flagship smart TV SoC with support for 8K resolution and high-speed AI. The chipset comes with a high-performance CPU, GPU and a dedicated unit (APU) to support AI voice-user interface and picture quality enhancement.

The MediaTek S900 comprises of an ARM Cortex-A73 cores and multi-core Mali-G52 GPU and support for external graphics to help users customise their products. The chipset features 8K video decoding at 60Hz, videos running at 120Hz and HDR10+ content support.

The S900 SoC features a dedicated AI processor unit (APU) which offers AI Picture Quality. AI PQ analyses the content in real-time to look for scene characteristics including faces and adjusts colour saturation, brightness, sharpness, dynamic motion compensation and picture noise to that particular region of the scene.

In terms of connectivity, the Mediatek S900 supports HDMI 2.1A which offers a maximum of 48Gps.The inbuilt AI will also be able to support facial recognition, gesture controls, voice signature recognition and voice assistants.

MediaTek S900 is currently under mass production and will hit the consumer market in early 2020.
