Govt raises the stake for Aakash IV, proposes decent features

Not many tablets under Rs 5,000 come with the features that are proposed by the Government.

The Government of India has finally made public the proposed specification of the much hyped Aakash IV tablet and if the final product would be anything like that than it would be the best low cost tablet in the market.

As per the government notification, the tablet must have a 7 inch display with “atleast” 800×480 pixels resolution. Also, the display should have minimum five point touch capacity. Most of the tablets under Rs 5,000 have such resolution.

Also, as per the government, the tablet should have the latest operating system. For instance, if it is launched now it should have Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean version. But it does not end there as the government has also specified that the tablet should come with dual bootable (through external SD card) Ubuntu operating system.
Govt raises the stake for Aakash IV
Though the notification, does not speak much about the processor’s capability to be used in Aakash IV, it has asked the would be vendor to make the tablet in such a way that it would give a minimum of 3537 Antutu benchmark score.

To make the tablet run smoother, Aakash IV would be fitted with a minimum of 1 DDR3 RAM – which is significant as most of the under Rs 5,000 tablet these days comes 512 MB RAM. It would also have minimum of 4 GB and a 32 GB micro SD card slot.

“Hardware accelerator should be capable of supporting OpenGL ES 2.0 playing true HD720p with at least 30fps,” the notification released by the government further added.

As per the proposal, the Aakash IV should come with WiFi (b/g/n), 2.1 or higher version, 3.5 mm jack, USB port and it should support all popular 2G/3G/4G phone/data connectivity dongles in India, USB to Ethernet adaptors, USB printers, mouse, and keyboard. “SD Card interface should support based SD card,” the notification further added.

The government though has not specified the exact capacity of the battery to be used in the tablet but it has asked the would-be vendors to fit a batter in the Aakash IV that would give minimum 3 hours for online 720p video playback with maximum brightness, minimum 5 hours on web browsing, 6 hours on e-reader and 30 days of standby time. The tablet also need to have a front camera of (0.3 megapixel) of higher.

The tablet should have a weight of less than 500 grams and must measure less than 0.75x5x0.75 inch (width, height, thickness).

Currently, iBall 6318i tablet has similar specification as mentioned in the notification like 1 GB RAM, Android Jelly Bean operating system, 7 inch screen, 4 GB internal memory, 2 rear camera, 0.3 megapixel front camera etc and it is selling for around Rs 5,000 in the market. We hope the Aakash IV would sell around Rs 4,000 considering the price of its previous version in the open market while the subsidised price would be around Rs 2,000.
