HTC Explorer (Rs 7,499)
Explorer was the first India specific model launched by HTC. It has very good support for Hindi also. HTC Explorer is the budget friendly smartphone with 3.2 inch HVGA touchscreen display and houses a 600 MHz Qualcomm MSM7225A Scorpion family processor. This handset has a 512 MB RAM that runs the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system quite smoothly. It features WiFi and Bluetooth 3.0 with A2DP. This smartphone also offers Stereo FM with RDS technology.
At the rear of HTC Explorer lies a 3.15 megapixel camera that can also record 480p resolution videos. Though camera quality is not great, the phone is otherwise very smooth and is one of the best in its category.

Galaxy Ace is one of the best sellers from Samsung’s stable. It comes with a 3.5 inch capacitive touchscreen with 800 MHz processor, 280 MB RAM, and 32 GB of expandable memory slot. The phone is based on Android 2.3. It has a 5 megapixel rear camera and a 1350 mAh battery as well.
Besides, the bar designed Galaxy Ace S5830 has usual features like WiFi, Bluetooth, USB slot, 3.5 mm jack, FM radio, A-GPS navigation, digital compass and location based services with access to Google applications like Google Maps. The smartphone offers one swipe access to social networking streams including Facebook, Myspace and Twitter.
Samsung has reduced the price of Galaxy Ace recently and is now available at average price of Rs 11,000 while in ebay, you can get it for Rs 10,199.
Sony Xperia U (Rs 12,560)
Sony has been expanding its smartphone portfolio in India for past one year and Xperia U is one of the lowest priced phones after the Xperia Tipo.
Like Samsung Galaxy Ace, it comes with a 3.5 inch screen but has Sony’s patented reality display technology that puts Sony Xperia U in an advantageous position. Sony Xperia U also offers a 1 GHz processor, 512 MB of RAM and 4 GB of internal memory.
The phone has the same styling as Sony’s Flagship Xperia S like an illuminated transparent strip below the screen. The phone looks great in the design and offers a very premium look.
Sony Xperia U comes with a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash and front VGA camera too (which is not there in Galaxy Ace). The phone is currently selling for an average price of Rs 13,500 while Tradus is offering it for Rs 12,560.
LG Optimus Black (Rs 14,100)
LG Optimus Black is slightly old workhorse from LG but still has very powerful specification especially at the price at which it is available and competes well with some of the recently launch more expensive phones from rivals.
The Optimus Black has a famed is its 4 inch IPS Nova display with brightness of 700 nits which makes it brightest screen even today in at least the mid-range smartphone category. Its screen also has Gorilla glass protection.
Besides, it has 1 GHz processor, 512 MB of RAM, 2 GB of internal memory, and a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash.
But the only drawback of Optimus Black is that it still works on Android 2.3, though Android ICS upgrade has been announced for it but the same is not expected to come before this year end. There is also no front facing camera like many smartphones in this price category.
At Rs 14,100, offered by Infibeam, the phone offers very good value for money. However, other online retailers are selling it for as high as Rs 18,900 but average price across different sellers is of Rs 15,500. At higher prices, the phone is not a good option as there are many new smartphones like Sony Xperia J which is priced at Rs 15,700.

LG Optimus 4X HD (Rs 26,499)
If you want a really powerful phone but are not willing to spend Rs 35,000 on the Samsung Galaxy SIII, you can look at LG optimus 4X HD which is available at just Rs 26,499 from Sulekha.com while the average price with other sites is Rs 28,000.
Optimus 4X HD is in fact a very new phone and is a flagship model from LG. It comes with a 4.7 inch True HD IPS panel touchscreen display with 1280 x 720 pixel native resolution.
Optimus 4X HD houses a quad core 1.5 GHz Nvidia Tegra processor with a low power GeForce graphics chip. For smoother operation of Android 4.0 ICS with Optimus 3.0 UI on it, LG has provided 1 GB RAM in the phone. By default, this smartphone features 16 GB onboard storage and a micro SD card slot to accommodate a memory card of up to 64 GB. This smartphone is only 8.9 mm thick and weighs just 133 grams.
In this device, LG has used an 8 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash. This camera is capable of recording 1080p HD videos at 30 frames per second. There’s also a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera for video calling and chat. Other features include GPS with A-GPS, Bluetooth 4.0, accelerometer, gyroscope sensor, support for a variety of popular audio-video formats, stereo FM with RDS, WiFi Direct, and DLNA compliance.
LG has added a 2150 mAh battery to the Optimus 4X HD to make it run longer and support talk time of about 9.5 hours over 3G.
