Top 5 video player apps for Android

0

Watching movies or TV shows while on the move can be fun, but not when your smartphone refuses to work. Thankfully, offers a wide array of media player applications that play almost every video format there is.

Of the different file formats in use, DivX and XviD codecs based .avi files are the most common, but not all Android smartphones are certified to play those files. That’s when third party video players come into the picture to offer you the best possible experience. These apps spare you the pain of converting video files to a different format.

It is very important for a video player to offer more than the basic so that it stands out. Each of the top five video players we’ve selected has something unique to offer.

RockPlayer Lite

RockPlayer Lite is one of the most popular and universally compatible video players. Various video files work flawlessly on it.

There’s an on-screen brightness control, volume control and even screen adjustment options &#151 some of the basic requirements to watch video on an Android smartphone. Throw in any file format other than the x264 encoded mkv files and this player will amaze you with smooth playback.

The only thing missing in RockPlayer is a good looking user interface, though the one used is very light and fast.

###PAGE###Mobo Player

Mobo Player is capable of playing even 1080p full videos flawlessly. To play most of the popular video formats, you will have to choose the “software decoding” option.

Apart from the good user interface, Mobo Player also supports streaming video though HTTP and RTSP protocols. This video player offers multi-audio streams for video files so that you get the best experience on your smartphone. If you use the player regularly some of its features, like the different sound effects, will make your video viewing experience enjoyable.

Mobo Player’s developer also offers separate codecs to be downloaded in order to run the program smoothly on different android based smartphones and tablets.

###PAGE###QQ Player

This video player has one of the best user interfaces we’ve seen. However, several users might face the space crunch since the is a massive 10 MB in size. It impresses with fluent and smooth playback of heavy mkv and avi files. It also supports plugins to display subtitles with the video.

At times the timed screen lock/time out can be annoying and that’s why this app has a Screen Lock feature, which prevents any such annoyance while a movie is playing. QQ Player plays several video file formats smoothly and adapts to the limited resources of the device to give compelling feedback.###PAGE###

MX Video Player

Best is to download one of those video players that offer separate codec packs. These codec packs are optimised for high quality performance based on the rendering engines supported by ARM Neon and Nvidia Tegra 2 chips.

Getting the right codec can be bit of a work but once it’s done, you are sorted. This is one unique player that allows zooming in with touch gestures while the video is being played.

mVideoPlayer

This player by default supports most popular video file formats that the hardware supports. However, if you’re looking to playback mkv files then you are out of luck.

This player offers a built-in subtitle search option, which is powered by OpenSubtitles.org. Apart from that the app can be used to check movie information from IMDB.com.

Unfortunately, this video player doesn’t play different video file formats out of the box.

Apart from these five, the Dice Player Trial gets a special mention because it can play mkv files smoothly and without hiccups. Enjoy playing movies on your Android smartphone without worrying about converting them.

More dual SIM Android phones to come in future

0

There is no doubt about the popularity of dual phones in India. Each and every mobile brand barring iPhone has got dual SIM phones in their portfolio.

However, dual SIM support is still restricted to feature phones (low cost segment), and barring a few based smartphones, there is a total absence of the feature in the smartphone segment.

Motorola is the only major player to have a dual SIM Android phone with Milestone XT800, and only one Indian brand Spice with its Mi270 is present in this space.

However, the trend has already started to gain momentum with LG already launching dual SIM version of its Optimus Net in certain markets like Brazil, Russia and Indonesia and is likely to introduce the phone in India next month.

Even Spice has announced that it will widen the portfolio with a new dual SIM Android phone called Mi350.

Huawei, which is the fifth largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world, has also said that they will be introducing dual SIM Android phones in the Indian market soon.

Anand Narang, marketing director at Huawei, told ‘The Mobile Indian’, “Dual SIM smartphone is going to be a very important segment in India, and therefore we plan to introduce phones in this category soon.”

Even the current market leader in the Android smartphone segment, Samsung has said that it’s an interesting segment to be present in.

Asim Warsi, director marketing of mobile business of Samsung India said to ‘The Mobile Indian’, “Yes, we see a huge demand for this segment, though I cannot talk about our plans just yet, we definitely feel that it is a very important segment to be in. I personally foresee a lot of people wanting to move up the value ladder (feature phone to smartphone) and yet wanting to retain the benefits of Dual SIM functionality”.

Notably, Samsung had come up with a few dual SIM Android phones in China.

As far as our own view is concerned, the dual SIM smartphone market is going to take the market by storm. And it will be a prudent move by the mobile phone brands to enter the space sooner. They should not repeat the mistake that Nokia committed initially by ignoring the dual SIM wave in feature phone space and ended up losing a big chunk of the market share to the Indian and Chinese brands who banked on this feature alone initially.

It can also prove to the next differentiating factor for the operating systems to support dual SIM functionality in better and more integrated way to gain or retain market share, especially in the markets like India and China (two of the largest and fastest growing telecom markets in the world).

Apple is reportedly thinking of adding this functionality in iPhone 5 as well. However, dual SIM functionality should integrated at the level rather being done by the handset vendors with some tweaking. So Google must add this functionality as a native feature in the Android operating system.

Android seems to have a clear lead in this space, and in our opinion will be another trump card for it in the long run, as Blackberry and Windows are yet to even start talking about this feature.

Windows 8 Store for Apps unveiled

0

Microsoft has unveiled a new application store portal for its upcoming Windows 8 devices. The beta version of Windows 8 operating system is expected to come in February 2012 and accordingly the actual application store thus is expected sometime in late 2012.

The demo portal tells a lot about how the future Windows 8 store will look like. The store sports a metro style user interface design, a la Windows Phone 7 affair. The store will have applications for both consumers and businesses. For search in the store Microsoft’s own search engine ‘Bing’ has been utilised.

Built using HTML5 and JavaScript, the Windows Store will open its virtual doors to consumers and begin allowing for submission of free apps for Windows 8 Beta in late February.

Windows 8 which has been designed to work with tablets, laptops and PCs. It will be available in 231 markets and in more than 100 languages.

The Windows Store is the single source for Metro-style apps, with a side-loading feature for enterprises so IT professionals can manage and deliver apps and updates to their users with ease and confidence.

To attract more developers, Microsoft has also announced attractive offers, which if successful may result in more apps for the platform. Today, the industry standard is for developers to make 70 per cent of every dollar spent on their apps but with Windows Store they will make 80 per cent cut once they cross $25,000.

For advertising, developers can use Microsoft’s ad platform or another third-party vendor. The store is expected to have a wide variety and number of apps given that Windows still dominates the laptop and PC business by a huge margin and going forward will also be made available on increasing number of tablets, making it a good market to be present in for the developers.

Remember people, food with new Evernote iPhone apps

Evernote, a company that makes a note taking application by same name, has launched two new apps called ‘Evernote Food’ and ‘Evernote Hello’.

Both apps for iPhone and iPod Touch are now available on the Apple store. Evernote Food app allows individuals to easily save and relive all of their favorite meals and food experiences, ranging from fine dining to home cooking to travel and exploration.

Evernote Hello makes it easy to remember people and shared experiences, as well as thoughts and impressions about encounters.

Evernote Food, focuses on capturing all aspects of a meal as they happen using photography, location, text and photo captioning. A single meal in Evernote Food can contain as many photos, notes, tags and captions as a person wishes. When a meal is viewed, it automatically displays any notes created in other Evernote products around the same time as the meal, giving additional context to the food experience.

All the information about the meal is automatically synchronised with the Evernote service, making it easy to find later within Evernote Food, as well as everywhere Evernote is installed.

The Food app helps in not just remembering the dishes, drinks and atmosphere at a meal, you can also track all the ingredients and steps in preparing a dish. People can also write and share restaurant reviews, manage their diet, remember food adventures while traveling

Evernote Hello, on the other hand, aims to modernise the standard greeting ritual. With the app, when two people meet, they exchange phones and quickly create a basic profile. Once added to Evernote Hello, individuals are displayed within a swipeable mosaic of faces.

When tapped, a face becomes a profile that displays a history of every encounter the two people have shared, along with other people who participated in the same meetings, location information and any related content from the user’s Evernote account such as notes and photos.

“The challenge with meeting new people is that we rarely remember all the critical information. We remember the face, but forget the name. We remember the name, but forget where we met. We remember the meeting, but forget the other participants. Evernote Hello is a modern fix to this classic frustration,” said Phil Libin, chief executive officer of Evernote. “It is designed to work the way our brains are wired, with a focus on faces and experiences. I’m excited to never forget a person again.”

People and encounters captured in Evernote Hello are synchronised to the Evernote Service and made available on all computers, phones and tablets where the Evernote application is installed.
