Mobile Review: Motorola Fire XT311

0

Motorola Fire XT311 is a budget phone with a fairly large 2.8 inch capacitive touch screen and a keypad, and hence it is a perfect tool for heavy texters. Also, the fairly large screen provides ample real estate for watching video and photos.

Design

Motorola Fire has a black glossy finish all around. To break the monotony there is an aluminum finished ring between the back panel and the front and also around the camera. Overall the phone locks good but it is not really slim. The phone is light weight at 110 grams and easy to grip.

There are four capacitive buttons on the screen, and below that is a well laid out Qwerty keypad that offers decent tactile feedback.

Fire XT311 has a port on the left side, and a 3.5 mm jack at the top. Volume rocker finished in aluminum colour with raised dots is on the right hand top and the power and lock button at the top right.

Specification

The phone is based on Android 2.3.4, and has a 600 Qualcomm MSM7227-1 chipset, coupled with 256 MB RAM. The combination of the two (processor and RAM) is barely enough for the phone and renders it sluggish when you attempt to do some multitasking or even open few apps in quick succession, but otherwise it is enough for normal calling, light games, or other tasks.

There is a 3.2 mega fixed focus camera at the back without Flash which does an ordinary job when it comes to photos, and records videos with a 480p at 24 frames per second. For budget phone this is decent enough. There is no front camera either.

The battery is a 1420 unit which offers one and half day of judicious usage with few hours of music, calls, running apps, WiFi, and e mail, good for an Android phone.

In terms of connectivity it has (7.2 Mbps), WiFi(b/g/n), 2.1, and USB port – all fairly standard for an Android phone.

Performance

Motorola has used Qualcomm MSM 7227 clocked at 600 MHz. However, this chipset doesn’t deliver as smoothly in this case as it does in some other devices like in the case of LG optimus One. You have to check for open application every now and then else the device gets very sluggish.

In terms of the OS, Motorola has left the Android more or less untouched. However there is a new user interface (UI) which is optional, called Moto Switch. This allows users to switch between four pre-designed profiles, namely Default mode, Business mode, Entertainment mode, and personal mode.

One surprising bit is this phone that is sold as a phone for social networking enthusiast does not come with pre-installed Facebook app. However, you can easily download the for Android Market that is available on the home-screen. Once downloaded, the app will integrate well with different functions of the phone like camera (to allow sharing) or contacts as well.

One more negative is the FM radio reception which very poor to say the least. Even at places where the reception is good for other phones, this one offers patchy reception.
We have already talked about the battery life, and we were satisfied with what it had on offer.

Competition

Know this one is very important part, LG launched its Optimus Pro at almost the same time, at same price and with same screen size and form factor, which makes the comparison all the more necessary.

While LG has also used the same chipset, it has been clocked at higher 800 MHz speed, and this shows in the performance, and makes LG slightly faster. However Fire is better in terms of three things looks (LG has a dull Matt black finish), battery life and that it offers capacitive Android buttons (LG has put physical buttons) which makes interaction with the OS better.

Verdict

Motorola has priced the phone well at around Rs 9000. It is a very practical offering giving near perfect mix of touch and Qwerty. However, low powered takes away a lot from the user experience. If you want a slightly faster device, go for the LG Optimus Pro, as even though it looks slightly dull it is more polished in terms of OS hardware integration. However, having said that this phone is better looking and the speed difference is not that great.

Also if you compare with other phones in the market at this price point this phone is definitely worth considering.

Resistive or capacitive: Choosing the right touchscreen phone

0

There was a time when people used to have the same mobile phone for years together but that has changed now. According to a recent survey, most users now change their mobile phone every two years.

But buying a mobile phone is still not easy. To make an informed decision, you must be aware of the various features, and especially those of the display, which constitutes a very important part of phones today.

Basically, there are two types of touchscreen displays — resistive and capacitive. The experience of using each is quite different, so we suggest you understand the basics of both before troubling your wallet.

Resistive vs capacitive

The basic difference between resistive and capacitive technologies is in the way they respond to the touch of your finger or stylus.

Resistive touchscreens are made of several layers, the topmost of which flexes under your finger or stylus, and is pushed back to touch a layer below it. This completes a circuit, telling the phone which part of the screen is being pressed.

Capacitive touchscreens don’t rely on pressure, and instead use electrodes to sense the conductive properties of your finger. So they don’t rely on having an object pressing particularly hard on their surface, and react only to touch of your finger.

User experience

The type of touchscreen can easily be recognised by the user.

Capacitive screens don’t require the user to press hard to initiate an action; a light swipe across the screen usually produces the desired action, such as scrolling through contact lists or photos etc, zooming in and out of web pages and maps, and typing emails and text messages.

Capacitive technology also often supports multi touch so that it can detect more than one finger at once. This can be used for advanced gestures such as pinch to zoom, as on iPhone or devices.

In contrast to capacitive touch, a vast majority of resistive touchscreen phones won’t normally react at all to a very light swipe — the user has to exert some pressure to initiate action.

While it may sound as if capacitive touch is the best choice, that’s not entirely correct. Resistive offers more potential for accuracy when used with a stylus, while capacitive touchscreens can only be touched with a finger. They don’t respond to touches with a regular stylus, gloves or other objects, though special touchscreen styluses are available.

Which touchscreen technology is better?

The general consensus among smartphone users is that a capacitive touchscreen is the way to go, but one thing that needs to be kept in mind is that capacitive screens, being made of glass, are more susceptible to damage by sharp objects such as coins, keys, scissors, tweezers, pens and so on, which invariably give your cell phone company in handbags and pockets. In the case of a resistive touchscreen, on the other hand, you can buy skin guards, which will make the device less responsive, but will still work. The same solution in the capacitive screens costs much more, as it requires special screen guards with metal insert. Also the other good news is that most of the high end capacitive touch screen phones comes with Gorilla glass or similar technologies which prevent scratches.

Touchscreen smartphones

The best capacitive touchscreen phones available in the market today include Apple’s iPhone 4, HTC Sensation, Motorola Razr, Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S and Samsung Galaxy series handsets. Barring Apple’s devices, which run on iOS, the others use Android operating systems.

For a resistive touchscreen from the Android family, you could consider Micromax A60, Dell XCD28 and Samsung Galaxy POP.

In you are looking for a touchscreen phone which will work on Symbian you can have a look at Samsung Omnia and Nokia N8, both of which have capacitive touchscreens. For a resistive screen, you could get either Nokia N97 or Nokia 5800 Express Music.

Alternatively, you can explore phones as well. Samsung Jet, LG KS360 and LG Cookie are good resistive touchscreen devices; and LG Crystal, LG Viewty Smart and Samsung Wave 3 are among the better capacitive screen devices running operating systems owned by their respective producers.

Latest development

Toshiba has brought a new technology that combines the benefits of both capacitive and resistive touchscreens, while negating their limitations.

The technology was showcased recently at the Embedded World Conference in Nurnberg, Germany.

Touchscreens used in smartphones are generally capacitive, which allow dual touch gestures but do not respond to a pen, gloved hands or stylus. Resistive touchscreens do the opposite; they accept pen, and gloved inputs but multi touch does not work well on these screens.

Toshiba’s touchscreens accept multi point touch gestures to allow users better control over their computing devices.

Samsung envisions a foldable, transparent tablet

0

Korean electronics giant Samsung has released a video showing a concept device which has a flexible display.

The video shows a user walking comfortably with a flexible and see through tablet which looks capable of increasing in size as well. It shows the device making video calls, displaying holograms and performing other tasks as well. We believe it should be an Amoled display, like the one found in Samsung Galaxy S II smartphones.

Interestingly, this is not the first time Samsung is making news about the foldable touchscreen. Sometime back, Samsung was in news for making a smartphone which would have a bigger screen like tablet without sullying your view with creases. Advanced Institute of technology research at Samsung Korea has revealed the prototype of the smartphone with a folding touchscreen display.

With the folded screens, a smaller phone that used to house a 3.5 inch display would be able to house a double size screen.

As reported by physorg.com, these displays have been tested for over 1 lakh folding cycles and after that they show a difference of 6 per cent when compared to new screens.

To make this folding display a possibility, Samsung has used two totally different independent displays controlled by a display controller and joined them using a flexible materiel like silicon glue.

With use of this technology, smartphones and tablets will definitely get a size advantage where in device will now be smaller than the display. Also Smaller display will help in making device more sturdy while to some extent reduce the cost of manufacturing also.

Mobile apps to reach one million mark in major app stores

0

Mobilewalla, a search and analytics engine, has said the marketplace is now reaching the one million milestone, and to be precise it stands at 987,863 total apps right now.

The company says every day 2,000 apps are being uploaded on different mobile app stores. Since the holiday season is also arriving, even more apps are likely to arrive in the app stores soon.

“This is truly an astonishing accomplishment that cannot be ignored,” says Anindya Datta, the executive chairman of Mobilewalla.

The app race began in July, 2008 when the iTunes App store opened and Google followed with the launch of the operating system in October, 2008. Recently, app marketplaces have been launched for the Blackberry RIM and Microsoft Windows Phone platforms.

Apple’s app store has 60 per cent share of the market, whereas Android has 32 per cent. Blackberry’s App World and the Windows Phone Marketplace have about 100,000 apps each that stands at about eight percent.

“In the early days most of the initial apps were ‘fun, indie’ apps, such as the Doodle Jump game, one of the first mass-market apps to gain viral popularity and paved the entryway for other mass successes like Angry Birds,” says Datta. “As app usage skyrocketed, the nature of the app ecosystem changed quickly &#151 new apps were designed to improve our lives, disseminate news, weather and even crop data in places like rural India.”
