Samsung India is reportedly working on a new online-exclusive smartphone series to counter its Xiaomi. The new series will be budget-centric and it will be priced aggressively to target Xiaomi best-selling smartphones.
According to a report by The Economics Times, Samsung will add some high hardware specifications to compete with Xiaomi smartphones. The brand is planning to launch the smartphone between Rs 5,000 to Rs 15,000 price bracket. At present, Samsung sells its On series along with some J-series smartphones through online channels.
“Samsung wants to extend its lead with Xiaomi which is possible by expanding e-commerce sales while consolidating its presence in offline channels. It will ensure that the 1.5 lakh brick-and-mortar stores selling its handsets are not neglected since Samsung knows it will take time for Xiaomi to build such a vast offline network,” a senior industry executive told the publication.
This simply implies that Samsung has started worrying about its soaring sales, all thanks to Xiaomi budget-centric smartphones. Xiaomi tied up with Samsung to become the number one smartphone manufacturer in India for the third quarter of 2017. Both the companies now dominate the Indian smartphone market with each having 23.5 percent of market share, according to the latest report by International Data Corporation (IDC).

It is a well-known fact Xiaomi does not face much of a competition in this price range as most of its smartphones are comes loaded with some decent specifications, which was particularly missing in Samsung smartphones. The Galaxy J-series did a good job as Galaxy J2, Galaxy J7 Nxt, and GalaxyJ7 Max were the key models that contributed to almost 60 percent of Samsung’s volume. However, with the competition getting intense in the online domain, it would be interesting to see whether Samsung will be able to give a stiff competition of Xiaomi.
