Nokia City Lens augmented reality App is now available free of cost for existing Nokia Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 smartphones. The app was recently launched along with the new Lumia 820 and 920 handsets as well.
Like other augmented reality apps, the Nokia City Lens also takes the help of the device’s camera and then overlays information about that place available online.
“The app provides augmented reality to provide on-screen information about the handset’s surroundings. The app then provides information about each building or landmark in the area giving the user an at-a-glance understanding of what restaurants, museums, shops and others places of interest are nearby,” Nokia explained on its website.
In the Lumia 920 and 820, the app is better integrated with the hardware of the phone. The existing Lumia phones, which do not have Pureview technology but do have a decent camera, will also benefit from this tech.
There are other augmented reality apps available to users like the Layar browser. However this app is going to be better thanks to Nokia’s better understanding of its own hardware.
