BlackBerry 10 platform aims to support Android 4.1 apps

BlackBerry recently confirmed that it will continue to support repackaged Android apps.

BlackBerry recently announced the BlackBerry 10 operating system and confirmed that it will continue to support repackaged apps. While the world still awaits the BlackBerry Z10 and BlackBerry Q10 smartphones, BlackBerry has shared its intention to keep the platform updated. BlackBerry has announced that the company is working to bring the latest version of Android Runtime on the BlackBerry 10 platform. In short, the company plans to support the latest and best apps developed for the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update on the BlackBerry 10 platform.

BlackBerry did shock everyone by supporting Android apps after adding Android runtime to the BlackBerry platform. Then the company showed uncertainty in supporting it citing piracy as one of the potential issues.

However, with Google’s improved efforts the piracy rate may have stalled a bit and may have given enough confidence to BlackBerry to go ahead with new plans.

BlackBerry just updated the Android Runtime Roadmap Page stating that the company is working to bring new Android Runtime of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean to the BlackBerry 10 platform. Currently, the BlackBerry 10 and the PlayBook support Android Runtime from the Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread update. BlackBerry aims to leapfrog the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update and aims for the latest update for its developers.

Upgrading the Android Runtime to the latest version is meant to support all the features and the application programming interfaces available on the Android Runtime from Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

That is great news for developers to port and repackage their Android 4.1 Jelly Bean features supporting apps for the BlackBerry 10 platform. In the long run, BlackBerry 10 platform based devices will have access to the repackaged Android 4.1 Jelly Bean based apps along with BlackBerry apps.

This is good news for those who plan to check out and invest in the BlackBerry 10 platform.
