This platform would now be used to create content for large variety of devices. The content optimisation work improves the user experience synchronizing, compressing, trimming the cloud feed – the result is good use of a limited for the smartphone users.

The value in the new app cloud or the new HTML5 apps for the users is in the native wrapper, which provides an icon and skin to the app that lets them work like native apps. Users will easily be able to access HTML5 apps as if they are native apps. The cost for them is also likely to come down, since such apps will be easier to create because the basic app will remain the same only different wrappers will be needed for different platforms.

HTML5 is a version of HTML language which supports multimedia and can be understood by all the devices including PCs, tablets and smartphones.

Memorable Moments 2011: Unsolicited calls, SMSes shown the door

0

Till September 26 this year, India had over 85 crore mobile subscribers and most of them faced a common problem – unsolicited telemarketing calls and SMSes. It was creating havoc in the lives of mobile users as we received SMSes in the middle of the night or telemarketing calls during important meetings.

But on September 27, after much dilly-dallying, Indian telecom operators finally decided to put up a system to curb pesky calls and text massages. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) proposed the system and the Department of Telecommunication came up with the regulation to implement it.

TRAI’s system, Unsolicited Commercial Communications, to curb the menace of unsolicited calls and SMSes, was initially proposed in February. Background work for it had started in 2010 but since telecom operators in India were not able to put in place a system to address the issue by then, the whole process got delayed.

The new regulations mandate two databases: National Customer Preference Registry (NCPR), earlier known as the ‘Do Not Call Registry’, and a ‘Do Call’ registry – with seven preference categories for choosy customers who would like to receive only select calls and SMSes. The new system will automatically include people who have already registered with the Do Not Call registry, and a filtering feature in it will block unsolicited massages/calls from reaching registered customers.

A new numbering prefix for telemarketers was also proposed in the regulation, which would allow people to know if it is a marketing call just by looking at the incoming number. The scheme has just recently been implemented. So from now on calls from telemarketers will have ‘140’ prefixed.

Apart from that, TRAI also asked mobile operators to limit the number of SMSes to 200 per day, which was initially set at 100 per day for each subscriber. This was aimed at reducing the number of spam massages sent by unauthorised telemarketers.

How to register for Do Not Call/Disturb

To get started, subscribers need to register themselves with the National Customer 909. Alternatively, subscribers can also send an saying ‘START DND’ to 1909 or log on to website ‘www.nccptrai.gov.in’ to register themselves and follow the instructions given.

Also, those subscribers who wish to receive all those commercial SMSes and calls can SMS ‘STOP DND’ to 1909.

The service also has two options to choose from &#151 ‘Fully Blocked’ or ‘Partially Blocked’. The first option puts a blanket ban on any commercial SMSes or calls. In the second, you can receive a few SMSes like your important bank updates or traffic alerts . The Partially Blocked category has identified eight options &#151 banking and financial products, real estate, education, health, consumer goods, automobiles, communication and entertainment, tourism and leisure &#151 for users to choose from. If you register for the first option you will not receive any commercial communication.

After you complete the registration process the mobile service provider will send you a confirmation SMS with a unique registration number. You are required to save that number for future reference.

How to file a complaint

There are two requirements to be met if you want to file a complaint. The complaint needs to be registered within three days (72 hours) from the time that unsolicited SMSes/calls are received. Secondly, the complaint must be filed using the number on which the unsolicited SMS/call was received.

Complaints against a spamming telemarketer can be registered by calling the toll free number 1909 or by sending an SMS to 1909. Those who wish to register a complaint through SMS should send: COMP TELNOXXXXXXXXXX date/month/year
TimeHour: Min

Here XXXXXXXXXX stands for the number from which the SMS was received or the header of the SMS. Alternatively, you can call 1909 and either go through the IVRS system or talk with a customer care executive for registering your complaint. On successfully registering a complaint the registrant will receive an SMS with a unique complaint number.

At any point of time, if you want to de-register or change your options then too you can call 1909 and follow the necessary procedure.

Do note that telemarketers aren’t eligible to market their products between 9:00 PM to 9:00 AM. Any telemarketer violating these terms can be de-registered based on the complaint of a mobile consumer.

Penalty clause

Telemarketers making unsolicited call or sending text messages to consumers registered for not receiving any unsolicited communication are fined Rs 25,000 for the first violation, which goes up to Rs 2.5 lakh for the sixth violation along with blacklisting for two years. The monetary punishment is much harsher compared to a fine of Rs 500 per violation that was imposed earlier on telemarketers.

Telemarketers would have to ‘scrub’ or sift through data banks customers registered with do-call and do-not-call registry’s to ensure they are calling or sending text messages to the right customers. TRAI will also monitor this system, an official said.

Cellular Operators Association of India, a body representing GSM operators, said the new regulations attributed more responsibility to the service provider.

Journey so far

After the regulation came into effect, Vodafone penalised telemarketing companies for making unsolicited calls to its subscribers, and deposited Rs 50,000 with the TRAI as fine.

According to TRAI, till September, 1,122 subscribers have been issued notices on making unsolicited call and sending SMSes while 111 subscribers out of them have been disconnected. In case of telemarketers, 17 of them have been penalised.

Impact

Ban on unsolicited telephone calls and SMSes has still a long way to go before it becomes a success story. After a lull of a few days, telemarketers are back with unsolicited calls and messages though there was a drastic drop in the numbers of calls and SMSes.

Currently, DOT and TRAI are unable to track the companies or individuals who send unsolicited messages through the internet from servers outside India. Even the government has acknowledged this fact.

Nevertheless, DoT and TRAI’s effort to bring out a regulation to address this menace needs to be appreciated, but they must not forget that this is just the start of the journey; not the final destination.

Qualcomm mulling more e-readers with Mirasol display

Qualcomm, which announced first colour Mirasol based e-Reader few days ago with Kyobo eReader in Korea, is now in talks with other vendors to bring out more such e-Readers next year, but did not divulge the dates for such launches.

“Qualcomm continues to discuss product development with many potential customers globally and expects to announce additional partnerships and products in 2012,” Qualcomm told The Mobile Indian.

“It will be wholly focused on addressing and redefining the e-reader category in the short-term and will target the smartphones in the long-term,” added the company.

This means that smartphones based on Mirasol display will not be launched any time soon, as the e-Readers itself will take at least three months to arrive elsewhere (apart from Korea).

Smartphones based on the Mirasol display will offer very long battery life with even smaller capacity batteries there-by reducing cost and also will offer better view even in the bright sunlight.

Mirasol, is a reflective displays, based on Interfero Metric Modulation (IMOD) technology, offer a significant reduction in power consumption as compared to other display technologies, while extending device battery life, enabling new features, and reducing environmental impact. Moreover, these displays require no supplemental lighting in most ambient lighting environments and can be viewed in bright sunlight.

Mirasol display dramatically increases feature options for users, design space available to developers, revenue streams for carriers, and differentiation for manufacturers of mobile devices.

0

The Windows Phone 7 version of Evernote, a popular note taking app, has now been updated. The new Evernote 2.1 version has many new features, specially created to work for the Metro user interface of Windows Phones. The new features include pinning notes to the home screen, support for new languages and note templates.

The notes in the Evernote and notebooks can be pinned directly to the LiveTiles on the start page itself, and users can also open specific notes such as text notes or audio notes through shortcuts pinned on the home screen. Users just have to tap note icons on the home screen to go to the relevant notes. Users can also create note templates to make text only notes or other type of notes which have predefined actions.

For example, users can make a template which launches camera, takes picture and adds predefined texts to the note as well. This may come handy to create business cards. The new languages being supported by Evernote include Japanese, Korean, Brazilian, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese, Dutch, and Polish.

About the new note templates, Evernote in a blog post said, “If you find yourself frequently creating the same type of note, then we have some good news. Rather than putting in identical information every time, Evernote now lets you create a template. Template notes can take a number of different forms. You can create simple text-only templates, or you can make templates that simplify a complex workflow.”

About text editing, the blog post added, “This update adds major improvements to the application’s text editing capabilities. Now, the experience of editing a plain text note is the same as creating the note. If your note contains rich content, then the experience hasn’t changed&#151just tap into the specific regions of the note that you wish to edit.”

Google Galaxy Nexus gets volume fix update

0

Google has rolled out an 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the new Galaxy Nexus GT-I9250 to fix the volume increasing bug. The early adopters of the Samsung built Galaxy Nexus GT-I9250 pointed out a bug that would sporadically mute the volume of the handset even when not tampered manually.

Early adopters of Galaxy Nexus GT-I9250 smartphone in US, UK and couple of European countries complained about the sudden mute the volume when the phone is in EDGE mode. Android Central demonstrated the bug on a video to verify it and then concluded that the bug existed with Galaxy Nexus.

Apparently, it was the hardware glitch with the EDGE radio chip and the volume keys that lead to act the surprisingly. However, the bug is not widespread but the firmware update Android 4.0 ICS build ITL41F that weighs less than 1MB is totally recommended. To fetch the update, go to Settings>About Phone> System Updates to get the update.

No free 50 GB space for Xperia for now

0

Sony Ericsson just a couple of days back gave a nice year end surprise to all Xperia users announcing availability of 50 of space for free. But now it turns out to be only a plan for the future.

According to the latest official communication coming from Sony Ericsson the Box.net cloud space promo is not available to any Xperia users for now. But the good news is that Sony Ericsson has not denied the availability of the free cloud storage space and is also assuring its uses that the service will soon be made available to all the users worldwide via an based application at a later stage.

“On Monday afternoon, we mistakenly posted a promo offering Xperia owners 50 GB of free storage via the Box for Android mobile app. While we’re really excited about working with Box down the road, this offer is not active today. We are in the midst of finalising the details of this promotion and are working to provide this offer very soon to all Xperia customers so stay tuned,” said Sony Ericsson.

In September earlier this year, Box.net had also partnered with RIM to offer similar 50 GB cloud based storage to PlayBook users but fortunately there were no hiccups experienced during that time.

Box.net has also partnered with LG to offer a similar service for LG Android smartphone users as well and we surely are keeping our fingers crossed this time.

Alleged Sony Ericsson Nozomi image surfaces online

0

Days after The Mobile Indian reported about the new Sony Ericsson Nozomi smartphone, an online forum has now posted a screenshot of the handset shown on Sony Ericsson’s website as an Ad.

Reportedly, Sony Ericsson is working on the 720p native display bearing handset under its Xperia brand. It will have 4.3 inch display and will house a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm mobile processor.

As per the SE IT168 forum, Sony Ericsson Nozomi will be branded as one of the new Xperia smartphones and has LT26i as the machine/product id. Sony Ericsson will join the 720p HD native display resolution bearing smartphone club with Nozomi. Its display will support 1280×720 pixel resolution natively and feature Bravia Engine HD. This native 720p HD touchscreen display will be heavily flaunted with the new breed of PlayStation Certified HD games meant for the Xperia smartphones.

Under the hood, the Nozomi handset will house a dual-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8660 mobile that has 1 RAM coupled. Initially the Nozomi will ship with Android 2.3.x Gingerbread update but it will be upgradable to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich whenever Sony Ericsson software engineers are ready with it.

By default, the Nozomi might come with a 32 GB on-board storage option. At the rear, Nozomi will feature a 12 camera with Exmor R CMOS sensor to click high quality images. This Exmor R sensor loaded camera is also capable of recording 1080p full HD video recording. Even the front facing 1.3 megapixel camera meant for video calling is capable of recording 720p HD video. To power this smartphone, Sony Ericsson will add 1750mAh battery.

There is no way to confirm whether the alleged image is official or just another render prank. Nonetheless, we can expect the announcement of Nozomi just before or at the Mobile World Congress 2012 in February. That’s when the world gets to see the new devices that can be expected through the year.
