Top 5 pocket friendly yet powerful Android phones

0

Android as far as smartphones go has done wonders and that too for users across all budget range. Today we have performance savvy smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S2 and the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc which are full throttle as far as performance figures go but true to their performance carry a price tag that is not friendly for many users.

Then there are mid range devices which are somewhere in between the high performance and the low performance devices making a value deal for their buyers.

But as the competition in smartphones has grown, Android smartphones have narrowed in to the category of budget friendly feature phones as well. These devices are not low on performance or specifications but they are meant for the users who are just entering the Android arena but with a smaller budget.

Samsung Galaxy Y (Price Rs 7,100)

By far the Samsung Galaxy Y has been the most exciting offering from Samsung coming especially for the pocket conscious people. Even though the Galaxy Y has a lower price tag, it has the features to put any mid range Android device to shame.

The Galaxy Y features a 3 inch capacitive touch based display with a 240 x 320 pixel resolution display which despite of a smaller size scores with better display performance. The device is light after having a 1200 battery, which is enough to power this device for up to two days’ use.

Galaxy Y gets Android 2.3 Gingerbread as its operating system and combined with Samsung’s Touch Wiz user interface, it delivers a nice user experience. It is powered by a fast 832 which is by far the maximum that has been offered at this price point.

There have been no major deductions about the hardware being a low cost phone except that the phone has a small 2 main camera, but it is the best phone money can buy at such a low price point featuring Android Gingerbread.###PAGE###

Spice Mi 310 (Price Rs 6,915)

The Spice Mi 310 is yet another decent Android based offering coming from an Indian manufacturer. The Spice Mi 310 not only is reasonably priced but also it has got decent set of features. The 3.2 inch LCD display comes with a capacitive touch.

It runs a 600 MHz processor, although it might sound average, but when it is considered with the actual performance of the phone and the price. It gives average performance, giving total worth of the money spent. It is available only in brown colour, which may be a sore point for some style conscious users.

The phone looks sturdy, but the 2 megapixel back facing camera is nothing to write home about. For connectivity and data transfer there is 3G, WiFi and 2.1. The phone also comes pre-installed with several useful apps including Naukri, Nimbuzz and Facebook. The quality is good and is a match for the better known brands as well.###PAGE###

Micromax Bling 2 (Price Rs 6,200)

The Micromax Bling 2, as the name suggests, is the second generation avatar of the famous Bling handset, and yes this one again is for ladies and girls.

Bling 2 has the same glossy white finish as its predecessor but Micromax has decided to shed the pink highlights, a really good decision indeed. The phone looks classy and definitely is an object of attention.

The 2.8 inch display has a capacitive touch that aids a smoother operation. The resolution of the screen is on the lower side but the Bling 2 compensates for it with ample colour vibrancy and image brightness.

The 600 MHz processor gives it all the power needed for a smooth operation and juice to support multitasking as well for the Android 2.2 Froyo operating system. It has 3 megapixel fixed focus camera which clicks good images in daylight but the quality falls badly in the night or low light conditions.

Bling 2 has one slot which is expandable unto 16 GB, but it would be advisable to use 4 to 8 external memory to ensure smooth usage. It has a 3.5mm jack for headset and audio connectivity.

Also included in the price is a phone case designed by the famous designer Satya Paul. Worth every penny you spent.###PAGE###

Sony Ericsson W8 (Price Rs 9,600)

The new version of Sony Ericsson W8 runs on Android 2.1 Éclair operating system but the main reason why any Android fan should go for it is that it comes with the Walkman capability exclusive to Sony Ericsson.

The phone weighs just 115 grams, and has a 3 inch 320 x 480 pixel resolution based capacitive touch screen display. It houses a 600 MHz processor with a dedicated Adreno 200 graphics processor, which is much better than the other phones within the same price bracket.

Social network lovers would love to know that it has deep Facebook integration, which means it can be accessed from almost any area of the phone, be it a music player, phone book, picture gallery or even calendar.

LG Optimus Net (Price Rs 9,990)

The Optimus Net is the upgrade to the Optimus One that has been quite a powerful contender in this category. Well the Optimus Net continues the legacy of low cost marvels but with the Android Gingerbread 2.3 operating system and a beefier processor as well.

The LG Optimus Net has a 3.2 inch TFT display featuring a 320 x 480 pixel resolution in 16 million colour pallets. The display is a little low on resolution and has a lower of 180 PPI as well. The inclusion of the Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM 7227T chip that includes a 800 MHz single core processor and Adreno 200 graphics engine for dedicated graphics support is a big point for consideration.

There is a 512 of to keep things speedy and the 3.2 megapixel camera does its job just well enough, but the 1500 mAH battery gives it excellent battery life.

If you are worried about the plainer looks of the LG phones then dont worry as the phone ships with a complementary snap on back cover in white as well.

Mobile Review: Motorola Fire XT

0

My first mobile phone was a Motorola handset, which had the best looks in the market at that time in the year 2003. I was also quite satisfied with its sound output. Eight years from then, I have now another Motorola handset &#151 a smartphone and not a feature phone like my first handset. However, this time I had a similar experience &#151 great looks and music.

But since its an smartphone, I had a lot to look out for under its hood.

Look and feel

As I said earlier, it has great looks. The 3.5 inch capacitive touchscreen rests on a finished body. The back side is made of plastic with a matte finish that gives a decent grip. There is a steel running around the phone between the frontal chrome plate and the rear plastic cover which is very nice to look at.

The handset is made for the natural grip &#151 it is thick in the middle and gradually gets thinner towards ends. It also has maximum substance in the middle. Overall, though, it is not outstanding, but is very decent and has a casual look that would appeal to the youth. However, it comes only in dark titanium gray colour, which could be a sore point for those who want to flaunt their mobiles.

The TFT capacitive touchscreen measures at 3.5 inches &#151 the highest which is available in this price bracket from a known brand. However, the display, which produces pictures at 320 x 480 pixels, is not the brightest. Although it does ensure that you would enjoy the vast number of games available on Android Market.

There are four capacitive touch buttons at the bottom of the display, which is sort of a norm these days. There is a dedicated camera key and the volume rocker on the right hand side. While the lock button and the 3.5 jack is at the top. On the left side there is one charger/USB port. So, basically, Motorola has stuck to the basics vis-à-vis the placement of buttons and you would not have to scramble to locate the keys.

Specification

Motorola Fire XT comes with Android 2.3 Gingerbread with an 800 Qualcomm Scorpion 800 MHz processor and an Adreno 200 GPU. For storage, it has 512 of RAM, 512 of ROM and 150 MB of internal memory. However, users could expand the memory up to 32 GB, which is sort of a norm these days in case of smartphones.

Fire XT boasts dual cameras &#151 a camera in the front and a 5 one in the rear, with and LED flash. GPRS, EDGE, and WiFi have been provided for internet connectivity. Fire XT can also create a 3G mobile hotspot, providing internet to multiple devices.

For entertainment, Motorola has adopted a modified version of TuneWiki where you can access hundreds of radio stations across the world. Plus there is also FM radio.

Though the handset does not come with a preinstalled Facebook app, you could download the latest from Android Market. When installed, the Facebook app gets automatically integrated with many other applications like camera. Hence you can then directly upload your pictures from the gallery itself. Otherwise, the phone comes integrated with Gmail and Picasa.

Motorola Fire XT undoubtedly has an impressive specification sheet among Android smartphones under Rs 10,000. Android 2.3 Gingerbread with an 800 MHz processor is only found in a couple of other smartphones priced below Rs 10,000.

Performance

Motorola has used a modified Mode Switch user interface which provides four customisation options for the home screen like &#151 Default, Personal, Business, and Entertainment. The is made keeping the communication angle in sight so on the home screen itself you could see tiles showing your call logs and messages in a very interesting mode &#151 which I liked the most, and kudos to Motorola for this feature.

The fabulous specification of Motorola Fire XT, however, does not fully convert into performance. The 800 MHz processor is good but is not the best in the industry. Initially, the response was lightning fast but the response gradually delayed by 2-3 seconds after about 20 days. The phone definitely slows down during multitasking.

Fire XT boasts a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, which looks very impressive on paper. In fact, very few smartphones priced under Rs 10,000 from a known brand have a 5 megapixel camera today. However, Fire XT camera fell short of my experience. It does not capture the nuances of colours and is only good in bright light conditions. In low light, it failed to impress us.

Motorola is always known for its music and this time also it passed with flying colours. The TuneWiki music system lets you listen to chartbusters from across the world. For more on TuneWiki, you can also refer this article.

Coming back to the music, Fire XT supports MP3s, WAV and AAC+ only, which could be a sore point for some, but for an average user like me, it does the job.

The biggest disappoint for me is its battery life. The Motorola Fire XT features a 1540 battery which should have a decent performance. However, despite being charged fully, it barely lasted a day with medium usage involving an hour of calling, music playback and WiFi use for a few minutes. You have to keep the charger handy always to ensure that you do not get stranded.

Conclusion

A phone ought to have an USP to make a mark for itself and especially if it has a lot of competitors. Unfortunately, Motorola Fire XT has no specific USP of itself. Motorola launched it as a budget phone, neither cheap nor with extraordinary features. It seems to want to establish itself in the crowd.

In the sub-Rs 10,000 segment there are multiple choices including the Galaxy Y (Rs 7,250), LG Optimus Net (Rs 10,000) that offer almost the same features and specifications.

However, the price reduction has definitely upped its appeal. With a price of Rs 9,000, it is definitely considered the best as it offers better features compared to other devices in this range. One thing is for sure &#151 you wont be on the top of the world because you have this phone, but this device wont let you down either. It has all the features and looks to please you.

Memorable moment 2011: Introduction of MNP

0

After a lot of hiccups, bureaucratic hassles, and technical glitches, Mobile Number Portability (MNP) was finally implemented in January 2011.

The service was originally scheduled for December 2009, but was finally launched on 25 November 2010 for trial in Haryana. From January 20, 2011 it was extended to other parts of the country.

All said and done, MNP was the most sought after service that Indian mobile consumers were looking forward to as it gave them the power to switch operators while keeping their mobile number. Earlier, for fear of losing their numbers, people often continued subscribing to a certain operator’s services despite being dissatisfied with it.

Procedure

A subscriber who wants his mobile number ported (his service provider changed,) will have to send an to 1900 to obtain a ‘unique code’. After getting the porting code, he will have to submit a duly filled porting form along with a customer acquisition form and a proof of identity to the service provider he wishes to shift to. He will be charged a porting fee of Rs 19.

Upon completing the formalities, the customer will get a new operator’s card, and the new operator will inform him of when he can start using it, which should be within seven working days.

After the specified time the subscriber can start using his new SIM. A mobile number porting request can be withdrawn within 24 hours of having been made.

A few things that the subscriber needs to keep in mind while porting are that porting is allowed after 90 days either from the day when an existing number was activated, or from the time when it was last ported.

Before porting, all dues will have to be cleared if it is a postpaid number. If it is a prepaid connection, any that remains in it will lapse.

TRAI’s reviewed guidelines

After implementing MNP, TRAI, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, received a lot of complaints related to porting. To address this issue TRAI came out with a new set of guidelines in May to make it easier for consumers to port their number. A key directive was that operators should not reject a mobile number portability (MNP) request if the amount due from the customer is Rs 10 or less (rounded off to the nearest Rupee). The amount can be adjusted in the customer’s next bill.

Before this guideline came into effect, companies had reportedly been rejecting porting requests over outstanding dues of as little as 13 paise. Another reason for porting requests being denied is ‘contractual obligation’, particularly in the case of premium or vanity numbers.

With the new guidelines, TRAI has ruled that “since numbering is allocated free of charge by the licensor, service providers are not justified in putting any condition for retaining premium numbers under the garb of contractual obligation”.

Contractual obligation can be ground for rejection only if a post-paid connection has come bundled with the handset with an exit clause, or if it is a corporate connection with an exit clause and the subscriber does not comply with it.

Journey so far

As per data compiled by TRAI, by the end of August 2011 about 181 lakh subscribers had submitted their requests to different service providers for porting their mobile numbers. Of these requests around 9.7 lakh pertain to Haryana, where MNP was implemented from 25 November 2010.

In MNP Zone-I, which constitutes North and West India, maximum number of requests have been received in Gujarat (17.6 lakh), followed by Maharashtra (14.8 lakh); whereas in MNP Zone-II (South and East India,) maximum number of requests have been received in Karnataka (14 lakh) followed by Andhra Pradesh service area (14 lakh).

In the month of August 2011, more than 25 lakh subscribers had submitted their request for MNP.

Impact

Singapore pioneered in introducing MNP in 1997. Thereafter, countries like Hong Kong, Australia, Europe, Japan, New Zealand and UK implemented it. By virtue of being the fastest growing mobile market in the world, India deserves to have MNP.

Many operators who earlier didn’t bother to provide customers insight into types of tariff plans have started doing that, and all in all, MNP in India has resulted in telcos improving their service, customer support and grievance management across networks.

MS Office may come on iPad

0

The tablet friendly version of MS Office may be on its way to iPad next year. According to The Daily, although Microsoft and Apple are competing with each other in many areas, the relationship over MS Office has largely been positive between the two companies.

iPad users have for a long time been demanding MS Office for their devices. Since MS Office is still the undisputed leader in the PC world, it would definitely affect cloud computing and online services positively once MS Office takes off on the iPad.

Notably, Microsoft is mulling over bringing a touch optimised version of Office to Windows 8 tablets too. However, Windows Phone is likely to take some time before it gains traction in the market due to the dominance of and devices in the smartphone segment.

So it seems to be a logical step to bring MS Office to iPad.

Currently, Apple has similar products for iPad users including Pages, Numbers and Keynote, which are charged at $10 (about Rs 500). The Daily has reported that Microsoft is also likely to price MS Office at $10 for iPads.

The news has not been confirmed by Microsoft yet.

Revamped app Path 2 available on iTunes

0

A new version of photo and video sharing &#151 Path, is now available on iTunes for devices.

Originally, the app was meant to allow people to share photos and videos with a close group which in contrast to the widely sharing social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter. The revamped version has expanded the ability of the app. Termed as a ‘smart journal’, the new Path 2 app allows users to share music they are listening to, the places they visit and the people they meet.

Earlier, people could choose only 50 people with whom they can share the contents. Now the revamped version allows users to extend the group to up to 150.

On Path, the details and postings remain safe by default, simply because they are shared only when the users want it to. Those who want the sharing to be more public, can explicitly make sure things are shared on Facebook, Foursquare, Twitter also but it is never done by default.

Path may turn out to be an app which is a digital version of recorded memory, which is how the Path users are using the app for.

0

Lenovo has revealed a new range of tablets which will be available in China initially. Among the tablets include S2007 and S2010 with 7 inch and 10.1 inch respectively, reported Engadget.

Both the tablets feature Google’s Honeycomb 3.2 operating system along with a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm snapdragon dual core processor and a 1 GB of DDR 2 RAM. Though the tablets’ launch coincided with the Google’s announcement of availability of Ice Cream Sandwich for all vendors, the new tablets do not feature the ICS.

But the good news here is that Lenovo is expected to launch the International version of the new tablets, called as the Ideapad, with Android ICS and maybe the newer Nvidia Tegra 3 quad core processor.

The 5 inch screen size based smaller smartphone tablet, about which we reported earlier, has also been named now as the S2005. It features a 5 inch display with almost similar hardware configuration as the other two while having Google Android Gingerbread as its operating system.

There is no final word on the availability of the devices as of now but since the company has started moving already towards the newer product range it is expected that we will hear more news on the Ideapad series as well soon.
