Paytm To Offer Auto-Rickshaw Booking Service: A New Challenger To Ola & Uber?

0

Paytm has been entering new markets for the past few years now and latest one for the payments is the market for ride-hailing services, where the app has begun offering booking services for auto-rickshaw in select cities of India. The new service is a part of the Government’s initiative called ONDC.

According to a Moneycontrol report, the company is entering the ride-hailing market offering auto-rickshaw rides in cities like Delhi, Bengaluru and Chennai through the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). The feature, which is still undergoing testing and is only visible to a small number of Paytm users, is poised to challenge the dominance of Ola and Uber in the ride-hailing space, according to the report.

What is ONDC?

ONDC stands for Open Network for Digital Commerce, a place where restaurants are allowed to sell their food directly to the consumers. Moreover, it also delivers groceries, home décor, cleaning essentials, etc, much like Swiggy’s Instamart, Zepto, and Blinkit. As the platform has been developed by the Government of India, it is pretty reliable as well. While the services first began in Bengaluru back in 2022, the platform can now be used in multiple cities to order food and various other products.

How Is Paytm Offering Auto-Rickshaw Booking?

In the last two years, Paytm has increased its reliance on ONDC for various e-commerce categories, including food delivery, groceries, fashion and electronics. “There is a lot of software testing and integration that goes into each rollout. There is no reason why Paytm will not also get into cab bookings like Ola and Uber as well at a later stage,” said a person close to the developments, per the Moneycontrol report.

The ONDC features on the Paytm app are operated by a separate entity called PAI Platforms. While the fintech company does not own any stake in this entity, it is supported by Paytm founder and chief Vijay Shekhar Sharma. While being dependent on ONDC, Paytm says the feature is ‘Powered by Namma Yatri’ when one tries to book an auto.

What is Namma Yatri?

For those unaware, Namma Yatri is a ride-hailing app that allows users to book rides directly to the driver without commission or middlemen. The app is designed to be fast, easy, and safe, with door-step pickups by trusted drivers. Namma Yatri is available in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Delhi, Chennai, Mysuru, and Tumkur. This means that Paytm has become another source for booking such auto rides for the Namma Yatri app.

Namma Yatri acts as an open mobility initiative. Open mobility is an open network where any mode of transport can contribute to provide services to commuters thereby removing the dependency on any third party organisations, such as Ola and Uber. The common network standards allows for interoperability for any buyer app compliant with the network standards to offer rides. The network allows for all forms of mobility operators ranging from auto rickshaws, taxis and public transport to coexist.

Namma Yatri has enabled 3.73 crore rides in 7 cities in the last couple of years, including Bengaluru, Delhi, Kolkata and other metros. However, majority of these were auto rides, and the company is also starting cab bookings across cities as it closes in on its Series A round of $10-15 million.

Namma Yatri makes money on these trips through a subscription model for drivers and does not charge any per-ride commission. But, sources told Moneycontrol that buyer-side apps could charge the seller apps a fee per ride for finding customers.

Instead of building its own network, Paytm is relying on Namma Yatri and ONDC for offering its auto-rickshaw booking service which not only saves it various costs but also makes it reliable for consumers to choose the platform as it’s backed by a government initiative. It won’t come as a surprise if Paytm also extends the booking service beyond autos, to cabs and other shared cab services in the near future.

Microsoft To Launch Xbox Mobile Gaming Store On Web In July: Know Details

Microsoft has announced at the Bloomberg Technology Summit that it will be launching a new Xbox Mobile Gaming Store on web later in July this year. The gaming store will consist of first-party games from Microsoft’s own gaming studios, and could also be the first place you’d find new releases from the studios before it hits other publishers. Here are the details that have been revealed about the Xbox mobile gaming store from Microsoft.

Xbox president Sarah Bond, speaking at the summit, revealed that the mobile gaming store is coming in July. “We’re going to start by bringing our own first-party portfolio, so you’re going to see games like Candy Crush show up in that experience, games like Minecraft,”says Bond. “We’re going to start on the web, and we’re doing that because that really allows us to have it be an experience that’s accessible across all devices, all countries, no matter what and independent of the policies of closed ecosystem stores.”

Aside from the first-party titles, Bond conveyed that the company will extend this to partners too, sometime in the future. According to her, there isn’t a gaming platform and store experience that “goes truly across devices — where who you are, your library, your identity, your rewards travel with you versus being locked to a single ecosystem.” Microsoft’s Xbox mobile gaming store will aim to build such an experience.

She adds that Microsoft will extend beyond the web in future which means the organisation may also be planning to launch a full-fledged store that will challenge the duopoly of Apple and Google’s App store and Play Store, respectively. Because the store will be made available on Web, it’ll be accessible widely across platforms and countries and will also allow the Xbox to bypass the rules and restrictions set in place by Apple and Google for making apps available via their own app stores.

The content available on the mobile gaming store will be fully revealed once the store launches, but one can expect titles from Activision to also show up in that store, such as Call of Duty: Mobile, Warzone Mobile and more. It’s possible that future new releases from these gaming studios will first arrive on the web store and then to Google and Apple App store, thereby maintaining exclusivity.

WhatsApp UI Redesigned For Android & iOS: What’s New?

0

WhatsApp has been testing a new user interface with beta users for months now and it’s finally ready to roll out the new redesigned on & for the general public to get a taste of it too. Here’s what’s new with the latest WhatsApp update that refreshes the UI.

“Over the years, we have primarily focused on adding utility to the app. As the product continued to grow in functionality, the design needed to evolve as well. We wanted the product to feel more fresh and modern without disrupting its core functionality”, read a Meta blog post.

WhatsApp UI Updated: Everything New With It

WhatsApp new UI

WhatsApp is now introducing a new UI that moves the tabs from the top to the bottom navigation bar, that now consists of the Chats, Updates, Communities and Calls sections. The green header has gone white while the WhatsApp branding at the top is now green in colour. The search bar has changed into a proper box instead of the magnifying glass icon. Moreover, one can also trigger the new Meta via the search box, as it was seen in a recent beta update.

WhatsApp has essentially increased the usage of neutral colors, making it more selective about where and how the green is used. Aside from that, a darker dark mode is also being used, with higher contrast and deeper tones to reduce eye strain in low-light environments. WhatsApp has made it one shade darker for improved visual appeal and legibility.

Icons and illustrations inside the app have also been refreshed. The icons appear more rounded and have an outlined style. To match the new iconography, WhatsApp updated the illustrations and added animation for a more “playful aesthetic”.

WhatsApp has further refreshed the original default background that has doodles. As for an iOS-specific change, it gets a new attachment layout where the full screen menu has been replaced by an expandable tray that allows you to see the features more clearly when sending media, polls, documents and more.

New unread and groups filter for chat filters have also been added to the top of the Android app.

Top 5 Myths About Air Conditioners You Should Know

As temperatures rise and the summer season approaches, many of us turn to our air conditioners (AC) to keep cool. However, several myths about air conditioners persist, leading to misconceptions about their use and efficiency. Here are the top five myths about AC debunked.

Upgrading to a Bigger Air Conditioner Improves Performance

Contrary to popular belief, opting for a larger air conditioner than what your space requires does not necessarily improve performance. In fact, an oversized unit can lead to higher energy consumption. To ensure optimal performance and efficiency, it’s crucial to choose the right-sized unit for your space.

Setting the Temperature Low Cools the Space Faster

Lowering your AC’s temperature setting does not cool your home faster. Air conditioners operate at a consistent speed, regardless of the temperature setting. Lowering the temperature setting will only make your unit run longer, increasing your energy costs. This practice can strain your unit, especially on hotter days, and may not result in a comfortable temperature. It’s best to set the temperature at the optimum level to achieve a comfortable and energy-efficient cooling level.

Cold Air From an AC Can Give You a Cold or the Flu

There is a common misconception that being in cold air generated by an AC can cause colds or the flu. However, this is not true. Neglecting the proper maintenance of your AC system, however, can lead to the buildup of mold and bacteria, which can trigger allergic reactions. Therefore, it is important to regularly clean and maintain your AC system to prevent these issues.

You Don’t Need to Clean Fins and Coils

The evaporator coils and fins in your air conditioner play a crucial role in heat transfer. Over time, they can accumulate dust and grime, hindering the efficiency of your AC. Regular cleaning of these components is essential to maintain optimal performance and efficiency.

Dusting and Vacuuming Your House Eliminates the Need to Change Air Filters

While regular dusting and vacuuming can help reduce dust in your home, they are not a substitute for changing your air filters. Dirty filters can block airflow, reducing your AC’s efficiency and performance. It’s recommended to replace air filters every 30-90 days, depending on the filter type and usage.

As we gear up for the summer months, it’s essential to separate fact from fiction when it comes to air conditioning. By understanding these common myths, you can ensure that your AC operates efficiently, keeping you cool and comfortable throughout the season.

Apple Apologises For The iPad Pro Ad

0

On Tuesday, May 7, when Apple introduced the new iPad Pro models powered by the M4, it also showed an ad during the event titled “Crush!”, which had people talking about it and made them criticise Apple due to which the brand has reportedly apologised by saying that it “missed the mark” with that particular advertisement.

Apple’s Vice President of Marketing, Tor Myhren, provided a statement to Ad Age, saying that “Creativity is in our DNA at Apple, and it’s incredibly important to us to design products that empower creatives all over the world.” “Our goal is to always celebrate the myriad of ways users express themselves and bring their ideas to life through iPad. We missed the mark with this video, and we’re sorry”, he added. It was also confirmed that the advertisement won’t be aired on television.

Shortly after the launch event, when Apple CEO Tim Cook posted the same iPad Pro Crush Ad video on his X account, users barged in with comments criticising the video. The video shows a bunch of creative tools, such as a record player, trumpets, paints, balls, etc., being crushed by a hydraulic press, and when it opens back, only the new iPad Pro is left. “I can’t relate to this video at all. It lacks any respect for creative equipment and mocks the creators”, one of the users commented below Tim Cook’s post.

Hugh Grant called it a “destruction of human experience,” while Handmaid’s Tale director Reed Morano told Tim Cook to “read the room” in an X post. Some users defend Apple, suggesting that the brand implied the iPad Pro is the ultimate tool that can provide you with the same functionality of those creative tools in a single device and not act as a replacement for those creative tools.

In related news, Apple debuted new hardware earlier this week apart from the iPad Pro, including the iPad Air, a new Magic Keyboard, and a new Apple Pencil. The new iPad Air, for the first time, comes in two sizes, including a bigger 13-inch model. The new iPad Air 2024 is powered by the M2 chip and has a front-facing camera at the right of the device instead of at the top.

Vivo X Fold 3 Pro Coming To India In June: Leak

Update 23/05/2024: Vivo has officially confirmed that the X Fold 3 Pro will be launching in India on June 6.

Original Story Below

Vivo debuted the X Fold 3 series in China back in March of this year and a report at the time said that out of the two models in the series, the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro will be making its way to India as well. Now, we have a launch timeframe for Vivo’s first foldable in India, which suggests the X Fold 3 Pro will launch in the country next month.

Tipster Paras Guglani posted on X, suggesting that Vivo X Fold 3 Pro is coming to India in June 2024. While Vivo hasn’t begun teasing the smartphone in the country yet, going by the report, the teasers might start coming in soon within a few weeks. The X Fold 3 Pro will be the brand’s first foldable in India upon its arrival. There’s no exact release date that has been shared for now.

Vivo X Fold 3 Pro: Specifications

Vivo x fold 3 pro black

The Vivo X Fold 3 Pro also has an 8.03-inch inner display with a of 2480 x 2200 pixels and a 120Hz refresh rate. It is a Samsung E7 panel that can reach up to 4,500 nits of local peak brightness. The cover display is 6.53-inch in size with a resolution of 1172 x 2748 pixels and a 120Hz refresh rate, supporting the same 4,500 nits of peak brightness. The panels support Dolby Vision and HDR10+.

Under the hood, X Fold 3 Pro is powered by Qualcomm’s latest and most powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, paired with up to 16GB of LPDDR5x and 1TB 4.0 storage. For optics, it gets a 50MP ultra-sensing primary sensor with an f/1.68 lens paired with OIS, a 50MP f/2.0 ultra-wide angle lens and a 64MP Zeiss 3x telephoto camera with an f/2.57 aperture, all paired with the Vivo V3 Imaging chip. For selfies, there’s a 32MP f/2.4 sensor on both the external and the internal screen.

It is backed up by a 5700mAh battery with 100W fast wired charging and 50W wireless fast charging. For biometrics, it gets 3D ultrasonic dual-screen fingerprint sensor. Connectivity options on the handset include Dual 5G, v5.4, Wi-Fi 7, 5G, GPS, Blaster, and a USB-C 3.2 Gen2 port. The handset is also IPX8-rated for water resistance and has stereo speakers.

Vivo X Fold 3 Pro: Competition, Expected Price Range

The X Fold 3 Pro is all set to compete with the likes of the OnePlus Open and the Galaxy Z Fold 5 with the Z Fold 6 also coming later this year. All of these smartphones have a price above the Rs 1 lakh mark in the country and Vivo X Fold 3 Pro is expected to follow the same trend. In China, the device has the following variants with prices including:

  • 16GB/512GB – CNY 9,999 (approx Rs 1,17,025)
  • 16GB/1TB – CNY 10,999 (approx Rs 1,28,730)

China prices of the smartphones are usually lower than the pricing of their Indian counterparts and we expect the same to happen with the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro. One can expect it to be priced along similar lines as the OnePlus Open or maybe even higher and closer to the Galaxy Z Fold 5. If Vivo does manage to surprise us, the Indian pricing may be kept closer to that of the China variants.

Tim Cook Could Be Replaced By This Apple Official As CEO

Apple CEO Tim Cook has been the head of Apple for over a decade but time is nearing when he’ll have to step down and the next potential candidate for the role is already being considered at the company. As per a new development, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, John Ternus, is at the top of the list of people being considered for the position.

As per Bloomberg, there’s “no reason to assume that a change at the helm is imminent,” but there are multiple possibilities as to who could eventually take over and Ternus seems to be the ideal candidate. Based on conversations with “several people familiar with Apple’s inner workings,” if the change were to happen soon, Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams would almost certainly be appointed as CEO.

However, the issue is that “Williams, who’s 61 this year, is only two years Cook’s junior, and company insiders say they think it’s now unlikely he’ll be the new long-term chief. Apple’s board would probably want an executive who, like Cook and Jobs, would stick around for at least a decade. “If you asked me five years ago, it was very clear Jeff was leading the pack to become CEO,” says one longtime Apple executive. “But the slowness to refresh the C-suite leaves a problem with who you can bring on board”, read the report.

As per the executives, Cook will likely serve as Apple CEO for at least another 3 years but post that, 49-year old Turner would likely take over the position. He’s reportedly “well-liked inside Apple” and has “earned respect of Cook, Williams and other leaders.” “Tim likes him a lot, because he can give a good presentation, he’s very mild-mannered, never puts anything into an email that is controversial and is a very reticent decision-maker,” says one person close to Apple’s executive team. “He has a lot of managerial characteristics like Tim.”

It’s clear that Apple wants someone as CEO for the long term and with Tim Cook approaching the end of his term, someone much younger than him would be apt as a replacement. Other well-liked executives at Apple, like Craig Federighi and Deirdre O’Brien are “unlikely successors” to Cook and others such as Phil Schiller and hardware chief Dan Riccio “are at the end of their tenures” at Apple, claims the report.

Google Pixel 8a Will Support Offline Finding, Just Like Pixel 8 & 8 Pro

Google announced around a month ago that its Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro have been designed to support offline finding through Android’s new Find My Device network and it seems like the Google Pixel 8a can do that too. The feature relies on the chip being supplied with reserve power even after the phone has been powered off or when it’s offline.

Mishaal Rahman (via Android Authority) spotted evidence in the Android API on Pixel 8a that’s responsible for offline finding. As per Rahman, Google set the system property “ro.bluetooth.finder.supported” to “true” on the device.

This system property is only set to true when a device supports Powered-Off Finding (name of the Android API for offline finding), which means the Pixel 8a also gets the same specialized hardware as Pixel 8 & 8 Pro that’s necessary for its Bluetooth chip to continue broadcasting the location of the device after it has been powered off.

One of the Google Help Centre pages says “For supported devices, like Pixel 8 series and up, if the device runs out of battery or is off, the Find My Device network can still locate the phone for several hours after it’s turned off.” That means you’ll have a good chance you can locate your phone even if it got lost or stolen hours ago.

Once you receive your Pixel 8a, you can enable offline finding on it by going to the Android Find My Device network settings and selecting either the “with network in all areas” option or the “with network in high-traffic areas only”. If you choose any of the other two options available, or turn off Bluetooth or location services, the feature would cease to work.

Google Pixel 8a supporting the offline finding feature isn’t a surprise considering it already borrows a lot of features from the Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 8, and gets the same Tensor G3 chip that powers those handsets. Once the network rolls out globally, users will easily be able to locate their Pixel 8, 8 Pro, 8a and possibly other devices also in the future quickly and without any inconvenience.
