Sony Ericsson Xperia Play now at Rs 21,000

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, which was priced at Rs 32,000 at its launch only a few months ago, is available for Rs 21,000.

Sony Ericsson has reduced the price of its gaming phone Xperia Play to Rs 21,000. Though this is not an official announcement, the company’s spokesperson said that it is in-line with the international price trend.

Xperia Play is a gaming phone with a dedicated game pad (similar to PSP) and a lot of exclusive games. And as with any content focused device, the revenue from selling content (in this case games) is more important than the retail price of the device.

With Xperia Play not selling as well as expected, Sony Ericsson is pushing the device by not just reducing its price but also by releasing new games. It already has 150 games for Xperia Play and has recently launched ‘Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light’ and ‘Lode Runner’ to this list.

When launched, Xperia Play was criticised for being over-priced and for having very few games. It was also criticised for being bulky and lacking terms of performance. However, many people also love the phone. And now with the problem of price and content rectified the device is certainly a must buy for even casual gamers as it is a decent smartphone with enough in specs to warrant this price. Gaming is an additional benefit.

The phone sports a 4 inch capacitive touchscreen, full PSP game controls, a 5 camera with flash, a front facing camera for video chat and Qualcomm’s 1 GHz Snapdragon processor. Besides, it has a dedicated Adreno 205 graphics processing unit and 1 of RAM.
