MediaTek launches octa-core processor

The new MediaTek MT6592 system-on-chip bears eight CPU cores and each can be clocked up to 2 GHz.

MediaTek has announced its first octa-core mobile system-on-chip solution, named as MT6592, for mobile phones and tablets. The new octa-core MediaTek MT6592 has maximum clock speed of 2 GHz and aims to deliver premium gaming performance, advanced multi-tasking and richer web browsing on high-end smartphones and tablets. MediaTek MT6592 based products supporting 4.3 Jelly Bean can be expected to release by the end of this year. Intex has already announced to release a phablet packing octa-core MT6592 SoC.

Samsung’s own octa-core solution, the Exynos 5 Octa, is currently the only mobile platform offering eight processing cores and is based on the ARM big.LITTLE processing architecture. The ARM big.LITTLE processing architecture involved in cramming two pairs of quad-core ARM Cortex processors together to deliver best possible performance in single package. Basically, four ARM Cortex-A7 cores and four ARM Cortex-A15 cores are crammed together to form this solution.

MediaTek’s True Octa-core solution is manufactured using 28nm fabrication process aimed to deliver high performance for mobile applications. This solution bears eight cores and each can be clocked up to 2 GHz. MediaTek believes that the SoC is capable of handling low power and high performance demanding tasks effectively. The company has also added an advanced MediaTek Scheduling algorithm that monitors the temperature and power consumption to deliver the top performance.

MediaTek’s MT6592 features the ClearMotion technology for automatic-frame rate conversion of standard 24/30 frames per second video to high-quality 60 frames per second video for a smooth playback. The MT6592 packs a quad-core graphics engine that is capable of advanced video playback supporting ultra-HD video and also new video codecs.

MediaTek has incorporated the Heterogenous Computing architecture that smartly distributes different kinds of workloads to the different processors. This helps in quick computing and smoother performance. The MT6592 SoC also incorporates the advanced multi-mode cellular along with a 801.11n WiFi support, Bluetooth, GPS, FM tuner and Miracast screen-sharing capabilities.
