Is HTC Desire 516c a good buy at Rs 12,990?

The HTC Desire 516c is behind its competitors in many fields but for brand conscious buyers, it does offer a good alternative.

Often I come across persons enquiring about are there any “good handsets” of HTC below Rs 20,000? And as quite obvious, I was always at a pain to recommend any, considering the plethora of superb smartphones in the price range. Now HTC has launched the Desire 516c at Rs 12,990 in India and below is a small description about its features which will give you an idea about its worthiness.

To start with, the HTC Desire 516c has a 5 inch touchscreen with qHD resolution which is a dampner considering that its competitors even offer full resolution while HD resolution is becoming quite common. Another drawback is that the phone comes with the two generation older 4.2.2 Jelly Bean operating system while Google has launched the Android 5.0 aka Lollipop version. Atleast HTC should have armed it with the Android KitKat version.

The Desire 516c also has the bare minimum 4 internal memory, so expect about 2 GB of usable internal storage. At the same price most smartphones offer 8 GB or 16 GB of ROM. As usual, the saving grace is the 32 GB micro card slot; but here too I must note that new age devices are coming with 64 GB expandable storage slot.

Thankfull, the HTC Desire 516c has 1 GB which should offer a decent performance with the help of its 1.2 GHz quad core CPU. HTC devices are also considered decent in terms of battery life and the Desire 516c should tread that path with its 1950 battery. I am not that enthusiastic about its 5 rear camera and a 0.3 megapixel front camera but I am hopeful that these two cameras would be better than most of its rivals.

Other than that this 160 grams weighing handset has dual SIM, WiFi, Bluetooth, port, and 3.5 mm jack but to my surprise, the listing on Snapdeal says that it has no GPS. The HTC Desire 516c is behind its competitors in many fields but for brand conscious buyers, it does offer a good alternative. We will update this post if more information is made available about this handset, so keep checking The Mobile Indian.
