The head of Niti Aayog, Amitabh Kant has said that Indians are now consuming more data than Americans and even Chineses.
In a tweet he claied that the total consumption of data by Indians has reached 150 crore gigabytes per month.
“Amazing! With 150 crore gigabytes per month of Mobile Data consumption, India is now world’s number one mobile data consuming country. Its mobile data consumption is higher than that of the USA and China put together,” Kant tweeted, without sharing the source of the claim.
Last month, Ericsson claimed that currently in India per person data usage is 3.9 GB per month or 1.3 EB (1 EB = 1000000 TB) per month in total. Ericsson claimed that this will grow to 14 EB per month by 2023.
Notwithstanding the huge difference between the data claimed by Niti Aayog and Ericsson, one thing is quite clear that Indians are now using more data these days compared to pre-Jio days. After the Mukesh Ambani LED company started operation in India, all other telecos have drastically slashed their data tariffs further encouraging people to embrace internet.
The data consumption from here on will increase further as LTE coverage expands.
