Google had confirmed that its upcoming Pixel 4 series will feature a new motion sending radar chip known as Soli. The company has also b confirmed that both the phones will feature a new type of face unlock feature as well.
Google has revealed that the Pixel 4 will come loaded with new motion-sensing radar chip, making it the first smartphones to be equipped with such features. The brand claims that the new chip is a mini version of the radars that are used to detect planes and other large objects.
The new chip will be incorporated at the top of the device along with other advanced sensors. It has detailed the list of sensors that will be used on the Pixel 4 including two face unlock IR cameras, one front-facing camera, one Face unlock dot projector, one face unlock flood illuminator, one ambient light/ proximity sensor, one audio port and Soli radar chip.
Google says that it has used unique software algorithms along with the above-mentioned sensors so that the device recognizes gestures and detect when a user is nearby. The Motion Sense features will also allow users to perform different gestures like skip songs, snooze alarms, and silence phone calls, just by waving the hand. The company says that the Advanced Technology and Projects team (ATAP) has been working for this technology for five years.
Next in line is face unlock feature. Pixel series were the only smartphones in the Android scape taht didn’t featured face unlock feature. Finally, Google is bringing the face unlock feature to the upcoming Pixel 4 series. The tech feature, Google says, is engineered differently.
Usually, when you unlock the smartphone using face unlock feature, one needs to pose in a certain way and wait for it to get unlocked. However Pixel 4 will use Soli radar chip to proactively turn on the face unlock sensors as the user reaches his/her phone. If the face unlock sensors and algorithms recognizes the users, it unlocks the phone as the user picks up the phone. Furthermore, Google says that the technology works in any orientation.
The company has also revealed that all the processing of facial recognition technology will be locally stored in the device. The company says that the face data will stored in Pixel’s Titan M security chip. Similarly, Soli sensor data is also processed on the Pixel 4 and it is never saved or shared with other Google services.
