If a report is to be believed Google may launch a smartphone under its own brand name by the end of this year. If it happens it will be for the first time Google will foray into the smartphone hardware space without any handset partner like Huawei or LG which whom they have launched Google Nexus smartphones earlier.
“The technology giant is in discussions with mobile operators about releasing a Google-branded phone that will extend the company’s move into hardware,†sources familiar with the discussions told The Telegraph.
The report further adds, “The new device, which will be released by the end of the year according to a senior source, will see Google take more control over design, manufacturing and software.”
It seems like this move is targeted to take on the dominance of Apple in high-end smartphone space, who has tight control over its hardware, software and content. Although, in terms of numbers Google’s Android-based smartphones outnumber any other operating system based smartphones by a huge margin but it has been plagued by delays of OS updates to different Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and lack of uniform user experience across different devices.
As and when Google-branded smartphones becomes a reality, one can expect better managed and faster rollout of updates.
