Facebook is planning to launch its long-awaited smart video chat device, the ‘Portal’ next week. The device will be available in two screen sizes.
As per a report by Cheddar, Facebook’s new smart device will have similar functionality as seen in Amazon Echo Show. The larger device could be priced around $400 (approx. Rs 29,074), while the smaller sibling might come at a price tag of $300 (approx. Rs 21,805).
The report further highlights that Facebook originally planned to announce the new smart video device at its annual F8 developer conference in May this year. However, due to several scandals like the Cambridge Analytica data breach and revelation of Russia’s role in 2016 US elections through its platform.
The report says that new device will come loaded with a privacy shutter option that will basically cover the wide-angle video camera, which is present on the device. The camera uses artificial intelligence to recognize people in the frame and follow them. The feature was developed due to a lack of public trust due to a recent turn of events.
The smart video device comes with Amazon Alexa voice assistant and it will let users play music, watch videos, get news and more. The report highlights that Facebook employees have been testing the device in their homes for months. The smart video device will allow users to view third-party apps like Netflix on it.
The video chat device will feature a laptop-sized touchscreen and it could be announced at the F8 developer conference, which is scheduled to take place in 2018. The touchscreen could measure between 13 and 15 inches diagonally.
