Samsung has finally announced the Galaxy Grand 2 for India. The handset is to be available in January next year. Samsung has not revealed its price yet, but during a recent event in Mumbai it said the phone will cost between Rs 22,900 – Rs 24,900. This was expected and it leaves the Galaxy Grand 2 directly in the den of the popular LG made Google Nexus 4.
So here is a head on comparison of the two giants to see if the proven one triumphs over or bows down to the new.
Design and display
Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 borrows its looks from the Galaxy Note 3 including leather-like stitched back panel that gives a very good grip while adding a style statement. It has a thick metal frame along the sides that gives it the necessary spark as well. Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 is also quite thin (146.8 x 75.3 x 8.9 mm) but weighs 163 grams. This is due to its 5.25 inch display. The display comes with high definition (1280 x 720 pixel) resolution.
On the other hand, the Nexus 4 measures 133.9 x 68.7 x 9.1 mm and weighs 139 grams despite having a much smaller 4.7 inch screen, but with HD resolution. This means the Nexus 4’s display has much higher pixel density.
The said model of Nexus 4 comes with 16 GB internal storage. It has no expandable storage slot. On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 comes with 8 GB internal storage and a 64 GB micro SD card slot.
LG Nexus 4 comes with a 2100 mAh battery and as we said during its review review, with medium usage the phone easily serves for two days without the need to look for the charger. Even for power users the phone will work for a day.
On the other hand, though Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 comes with a huge 2600 mAh battery, it has a much bigger screen and is thus likely to provide about the same battery back up as the Nexus 4.
The Galaxy Grand 2 comes with an 8 megapixel auto focus rear camera and a 1.9 megapixel front camera. As per the company, both the front and rear cameras are able to capture high definition videos.
The Nexus 4 has an 8 megapixel auto focus camera at the back with a single LED flash. There is also a front facing 1.3 megapixel camera in the Nexus 4. As we found out during its review, the Nexus 4’s camera does quite a nice job outdoors where light is not an issue. The sharpness is nice and pictures appear well balanced. However, in terms of detail, the camera is not top notch even in bright light. Indoors, even in decent light, pictures start getting grainy, though the graininess is at acceptable levels until you zoom in. It is of course not feasible to compare the camera quality of these handsets as of now but figure wise the Grand 2 has a better front camera than the Nexus 4.
Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 comes with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean operating system but Google Nexus 4 has an upper hand in the OS segment as it already has Android 4.4 KitKat and is likely to get future Android releases sooner than the Grand 2.
In the processing arena too, with a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2 GB RAM, and an Adreno 320 graphics processing unit, the LG Nexus 4 seems to be much ahead of the Grand 2, which comes with a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 MSM8226 processor paired with Android 305 GPU.
The LG Google Nexus 4 comes with a single SIM slot. This 3G smartphone has WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, and a micro USB port. Against this, the Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 has a dual SIM slot with dual standby mode, dual band WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, micro USB and DLNA.
The Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 looks attractive in terms of display, camera, storage, and even performance. Though it is not the best handset in any of the areas stated above it has a good combination that makes it look better than the Nexus 4. Of course, for gamers, Nexus 4 is undoubtedly the best choice. However, pricing would be pivotal in deciding the fate of Grand 2. If Samsung priced it more than Rs 23,500, it would not make the Grand 2 popular as Samsung’s older Galaxy S3 is available for Rs 24,000. Other giants like HTC Desire 601 too are available for the same price.
