Samsung Galaxy SII gets Android 2.3.6

0

Samsung has released a new firmware update, 2.3.6, for its Galaxy SII smartphone. With this update, the lock screen hang bug has been fixed, and also the camera interface has been revamped.

The phone now boots up faster and HSPA (3G) connectivity speed has also been increased which is surprising as the phone already offers 21 speed; may be the uplink speed has been improved from current 5.76 Mbps. Additionally, there are a number of security and performance improvements as well.

To check the new software’s availability, go to “Settings”, “About phone” and then “Check for updates.”

The phone has sold more than three million units worldwide and is adding many more each day. The Galaxy S2 has a 4.3 inch (Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode) Plus display.

The phone features an ARM cortex A9 based 1.2 GHz dual core and a dedicated graphics chip from ARM MALI, coupled with 1 RAM. The phone comes with HDMI and port for on the go connectivity as well.

It also, features an 8 rear camera which is capable of full 1080 video recording, and a 2 megapixel front facing camera. S2 also supports Near Field Communications or as well for mobile transactions.

Motorola XT615 expected by January in India

0

Motorola has launched its latest smartphone ‘XT615’ in Taiwan and is soon likely to launch it here in India at an expected price of Rs 17,500.

The phone offers a unique proposition with a large 4 inch screen, 8 megapixel rear camera with LED flash and a front facing camera for video calling. Besides, it has 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth, and latest Android 2.3 version but with a comparatively smaller 800 processor. This combination has been chosen so that price could be kept lower without compromising on feature list.

Every other aspect of the phone seems to be high-end except for the processor. Even and ROM are 512 and 1 respectively and this we believe will afford the phone a decent performance.

At just 9.8 mm thin with a 4 inch edge-to-edge screen and Android 2.3, the phone is definitely a looker. There is also a place to attach your key chain in lower left corner of the phone, adding slight design element that differentiates the phone from the rest.

“Motorola has always been about connecting style with technology,” said Ritchie Ma, general manager of Motorola Mobility Taiwan limited.

“The new Motorola XT615 embodies the connection of style and technology with one more great advantage: a price that’s almost too good to be true. Now an amazing combination of power and style is within the reach of more people than ever before,” he added.

Motorola has also incorporated its new Moto Switch user interface, which based on who you talk to and which apps you use and keeps all of that information front and center.

There will be two colours – dark grey and white. The phone will be available in Taiwan starting December 15th. Given Motorola’s budget credentials and past history, the device is expected to be launched in India by end of January or probably before that. Notably, Moto Razr came to India within a month of its international launch.

However for Motorola, the biggest challenge will be to price the phone right. In Taiwan currently it has been priced at an India rupee equivalent of Rs 18,600. However at that price it will be undercut by Samsung Galaxy S I9003, which has same screen size and bigger 1GHz processor, though only a 5 megapixel camera. And LG Optimus Black with a similar feature set as that of the Samsung Galaxy S I9003. Both the phones are selling at close to Rs 17,500 to Rs 18,000.

This makes us think that Motorola will try to price it at least slightly lower than these phones at roughly around Rs 17,500 level.

Appmobi aims to break walled gardens with better web apps

Soon more web apps with native app-like capabilities may flood the market if AppMobi, which creates development tools for HTML5, has its way.

AppMobi has made its key HTML5 development technologies open source. These technologies will help developers build web-apps with capabilities similar to native apps (apps that you download to your device).

Web apps open in a and hence are universally accessible from various devices unlike a native which can only be accessed if it is built for that particular system.

AppMobi has released the source code of its “mobiUs” browser, which allows HTML5 web apps to perform identically to native apps. AppMobi uses “DirectCanvas” technology, which accelerates HTML5 canvas rendering, physics calculations and sound by as much as 1500 per cent, providing native performance to HTML5-based games.

While the browser is already available for devices, an version will arrive in the first three months of 2012.

The mobiUs browser lets web apps access all of the hardware features of your smartphone. With this browser, web apps will work as native apps, hence you can access them whether you have an internet connection or not.

The browser will also offer improved game performance, and instant push notifications from apps or other users. AppMobi has also included a built in ‘1Touch’ wallet for online purchases.

“We believe in the open web and the importance of an open environment for mobile apps and services,” said AppMobi’s chief technology officer, Sam Abadir. “To help advance the industry’s move from native apps to web-based apps, we are sharing our mobile HTML5 knowledge with the global software development community.”

He added, “Among other benefits, the innovations in this open source release will improve the mobile web experience through faster downloads, better offline usage and dramatic HTML5 game performance increases. An improved HTML5 user experience is the ‘rising tide that lifts all ships’ for open web mobile developers, and we are happy to pour our technology into that harbor.”

AppMobi has also released the open source code of iOS XCode and Android Eclipse projects which will be of particular benefit to developers who want to extend existing native apps with HTML5 tabs or views. For example, a developer can easily add a photo sharing feature to a native app by mixing AppMobi’s enhanced PhoneGap with Facebook JavaScript APIs.

The company has also released JavaScript Bridge API which provides a cross platform JavaScript bridge that allows web sites and web apps to access device APIs on iOS and Android platforms. Developers who wish to download the source code can visit AppMobi’s website.

LG confirms Android ICS for Optimus handsets

LG will roll out the latest Ice Cream Sandwich update for its high end Optimus smartphones, the handset manufacturer has confirmed.

“The Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) will be initially available for the following high-end LG smartphones which were introduced this year: the Optimus 2X, the Optimus Black, the Optimus 3D and the Optimus LTE,” the company announced on its Facebook page.

“We are also continuing to evaluate the ICS OS to determine whether it is compatible with the functionality, features and performance of other LG smartphones to make the ICS OS available on as many LG smartphones as possible,” LG added.

However, the company has yet not divulged the dates but since the post has appeared this month, it is expected that the information on the update rollout timeline will only be revealed towards the third or the fourth week of December.

LG had earlier this month promised the ICS update for its smartphones but had not revealed the names. This latest announcement will come as a great relief for the users of LG Optimus smartphones.

Also, it is not clear now whether the users will first be getting the Android Gingerbread upgrade or LG will be leapfrogging to the ICS upgrade for such users. More clarity on the updates will only be obtained as and when the rollout plans and the upgrade list of the Android line up is officiated.
