Should you upgrade to iPhone 4S?

0

Apple quietly announced the much awaited iPhone 4S in India through Airtel and Aircel mobile operators. Several thousand jaws dropped. Not at the iPhone 4S but at its price &#151 Rs 44,500 for 16 GB, Rs 50,900 for 32 and Rs 57,500 for 64 GB. Indeed, it is jaw-dropping for the slightly bumped improvements and a half-step upgrade to the existing iPhone 4. So if you already have an iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4, and are thinking of upgrading to an iPhone 4S, here are a few things to think about.

Design

iPhone 4S comes with the same design as the iPhone 4, . and has the same high-resolution 3.7 inch with 960 x 640 pixel and 326 ppi density. There’s no change in the physical design either. The device hasn’t become slimmer or lighter. The lack of a bigger display was disappointing. It’s likely that the display hasn’t been increased in size because that would mean that developers would have to make their apps compatible with the new resolution.

However, rival are getting slimmer, lighter and sporting bigger displays with advanced panel technologies supporting highest possible resolution of up to 720p HD.

Hardware

Apple has packed a new dual-core A5 mobile processor, which was used in the iPad 2 tablet. Despite having a dual-core the phone has been clocked at 1 GHz and there is no mention of the significance of the second core. Although it does offer twice the computing muscle, not many applications can actually make the best of both cores. Apart from that, the graphics chip &#151 PowerVR SGX543MP2 is currently top of the line and comes with two cores. The graphics chip does offer seven times more performance while playing games and also loads apps faster, though the configuration remains unchanged.

The iPhone 4S comes with a network which means it supports GSM as well as CDMA. Though Apple still hasn’t joined the Near Field Communication bandwagon, the company has compensated that with a 4.0 chip which consumes much less power compared to its predecessors.

Apple has, in all fairness, packed an 8 camera that can record 1080p full video, and is a step higher than the iPhone 4’s 5 megapixel snapper. The iPhone 4S has a front facing camera for Face-Time but it still isn’t possible to make video calls over 3G. If one is looking just at the camera, then the smartphone is more expensive than a good quality DSLR camera.

The bottom line is that despite the new hardware promising better performance, the display isn’t big enough to make the best of it. Meanwhile, the competition has dual-core processors with higher clock speeds with larger but poorer quality displays.

Software and services

Apple did give serious attention to the needs of its consumers by rolling out the 5 update. The age old MobileMe service was revamped and launched as iCloud offering 5 GB of online storage. However, the issues related to iOS 5, such as the volume and the end call button acting weirdly, continue to exist. Even the popular virtual assistant service Siri is causing trouble for users outside the United States.

Technically, Siri is perfect except for its sentence formation and its bad phonetics that cause weird results. As of now the service is in beta, and Dan Kittlaus, the creator of Siri, recently left Apple. Besides that, ever since the iPhone 4S was released its software has suffered from several SIM failure issues that continue to exist.

Battery

Battery life has taken a massive hit with the iOS 5 update. Also, the of iPhone 4S has come down to approximately 200 hours, compared to the 300 hours of standby time on iPhone 4, though talktime has been improved by one hour in the new edition. Sure the hour more of talking time over networks is welcome but the standby time foresees massive fall.

Price

In a price-sensitive country such as India, several consumers consider the price of a smartphone before buying it. The all time high prices of iPhone 4S have left a number of existing iPhone 4S users wondering. Sure, the iPhone 4S does have more graphics punch, a full HD recording camera and a half-baked Siri assistant, but all that isn’t worth more than Rs 10,000. Relative to the competition, iPhone 4S certainly falls short in terms of hardware and specifications, if one were to ignore its apps. Also, there are no subsidised data plans for handset buyers, but only a promise of the savings they will see after a year or two. Clearly, the iPhone devices don’t get to enjoy normal 3G data plans like other devices do.

Finally, the decision lies with the end consumer whether it is worth buying an upgraded phone that looks almost like iPhone 4, has battery issues, software issues but offers 1080p HD video recording.

Windows Phone 7 Marketplace crosses 40K apps

0

Within a year of its launch in November 2010, the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace has crossed the coveted 40,000 apps mark &#151 making it the fifth largest app store.

Distimo, which provides insight into the mobile app store market, revealed this information in a report. Windows Phone 7 Marketplace lags behind Apple App Store, Google Market, Nokia Ovi Store and BlackBerry App World.

The app store from Windows is adding new content continuously, and there are 1300 new paid apps and 1650 new free apps added to it every month. The app store is also seeing 700 new publishers every month. Windows Phone 7 Marketplace is currently available in 35 countries. The USA, however, remains the biggest market for the app store.

The good part about Microsoft’s policy is the implementation of ‘app spam’, wherein the company makes sure only genuine apps are added to Windows Marketplace. In the month of June, Microsoft removed about 1,000 apps from the Marketplace, and the store actually grew in October, contrary to expectations.

HTC Titan, Samsung Omnia W, Samsung Focus, HTC Radar and Dell Venue Pro are the latest Windows Phones in India.

0

Apple has pushed a new 5.1 beta build to the platform developers for testing. This update is meant to address the iPhone 4S battery drain issues more seriously and also fix the bugs with virtual assistant &#151 Siri. Do note that Siri is still in beta phase and several issues would exist.

Notably, iPhone 4S adopters have been complaining about the battery drain issues and Apple did release the iOS 5.0.1 update to fix them. However, the battery drain issue continues to persistently haunt the Apple Software engineers.

Apart from that, the iOS 5.1 beta includes several underlying bug fixes. Currently the iOS 5.1 beta is in testing phase and might be released sometime early next year.

The iOS 5.1 beta build will continue to stay under beta testing with registered Apple iOS platform developers till early January 2012. Till then, users may have to cope with the existing issues with the iOS 5.0.1 running devices.

Sony P tab now available in UK, coming soon to India

0

Sony has finally launched its new dual screen tablet in UK, priced at £500 or about Rs 40,300. Its predecessor, Sony Tablet S, which has a single 10 inch screen, is priced at Rs 29,990 only.

The Sony Tablet P comes in a design with twin 5.5 inch touchscreen displays sporting 1024×480 pixel resolution. Which means the device is as pocketable as a smartphone when folded and is a full 10 inch tablet when open.

Under the hood this tablet houses a dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 mobile processor. This tablet has a 5 camera at the back and 0.3 megapixel camera in the front.

The tablet is based on Android 3.2 Honeycomb and is likely to be upgraded to 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich later on. The phone will be available with WiFi only model with an of 4 GB.

The tablet is PSP certified and one of the screen acts as the game pad while the other acts as the display when playing games. This somewhat makes it an Xperia Play type device. It’s not clear if Sony P will get all the games that Xperia Play gets.

Cost aside, this tablet is a very attractive preposition given the ease with which you can carry it around and its ability to mimic a PSP gaming device. Cost of the tablet is likely to go down after few months of launch.

The tablet is likely to be launched here in India in next couple of weeks as its predecessor – Sony Tablet S, came to the sub-continent within weeks of its international launch. The pricing is also expected to be very similar to the UK one as is the case with the Tablet S.

HTC Sensation XL launched for Rs 38,800 in India

0

HTC has finally announced the new Sensation XL smartphone in India for Rs 40,000, which does seem insanely high.

The HTC Sensation XL comes with a 4.7 inch display and features HTC Sense UI 3.5 layered on 2.3 Gingerbread. HTC has also added Beats Audio technology for better audio output, and bundles a pair of earphones as well. The Best Buy price of HTC Sensation XL is Rs 38,800.

This new handset is the latest inclusion to HTC’s Sensation family after the Sensation, Sensation and Sensation XE. Sporting a massive 4.7 inch Super display, Sensation XL comes with 480 x 800 pixel resolution, which might be worrisome considering the display size.

Under the slim 9.9 mm body, Sensation XL houses a single-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Scorpion MSM8255T mobile processor coupled with Adreno 205 graphics. This mobile supports dual-channel low-power DDR2 memory clocked at 333 MHz. The same mobile processor and chipset configuration has been used in the Nokia Lumia 800, HTC Titan, Samsung Omnia W, Samsung Focus S, and a couple of other smartphones. However, Sensation XL features only 768 of RAM.

HTC has used Android 2.3.x Gingerbread mobile operating system with HTC Sense 3.5 user interface on it. Sensation XL features the Beats Audio technology that incorporates pre-configured audio profiles loaded on phones, which become active as soon as the Beats earphones are plugged in the 3.5 mm audio port.

HTC has added an 8 camera at the rear with auto-focus and flash with the ability to record 720p video. At the front lies a 1.3 megapixel camera for video calls and chatting.

The phone’s 1600 battery promises up to seven hours of talktime on 3G. Other features of this high-end HTC handset include a digital compass, active noise cancellation with dedicated mic, gyro sensor, an ambient light sensor, a and a gravity sensor.

The price of this smartphone might be a bit of a hiccup because except for the massive display and Beats Audio technology, this smartphone has nothing new to offer.

How to make Android smartphone boot faster

0

Several Google Android based smartphone users often complaint about slow boot up and shorter battery life of their devices. Thanks to Android being so flexibly open, there are ample amount of applications that will help one achieve the desired functions.

Android Assistant is one such powerful available for free from Android Market.

Usually, several applications and services are cued to commence as soon as the phone boots up for which the device takes some time to arrive to a normal (usable) state. However by customising, one can actually bring down the smartphone boot time from about two minutes to 40 seconds.

Android Assistant helps users to customise the list of apps that load during phone’s start-up. While customising, users need to choose applications wisely else the Android smartphone will refuse to boot.

Step 1

Open the Android Assistant App and tap on the Tools tab.

Step 2

From the available grid of icons, choose the Startup Manager (one with a smiley face).

Step 3

User Tab means all the user installed applications that load up when the phone boots. Choose the ones which you don’t wish to load when the phone starts.

Step 4

Go to the System tab. Be careful when you choose the number of apps and/or services which you don’t wish to load when the phone boots up.

Having done that, you can try rebooting your Android smartphone. It would be comparatively faster than earlier. Just ensure you don’t end up choosing critical Android services.

App Review: Musaic Box

0

Musaic Box is a difficult game to categorise. It is a puzzle and at the same time it is also part adventure where users make their way through different rooms looking for clues about a musical impresario.

Users need to put some music together so they need to have a good ear for music also. Overall, the game looks like a melting pot, but users tend to think with so many disparate elements, whether it will work for the users or not.

The game itself is very immersive in nature, where users get to see several rooms with clickable items. Users have to bring together music outlines which are then played in the music box. The also teaches users about the music; it depends on the users whether they like to know about the music or not.

Users have to move from one room to another looking for clues. When the outline has been completed, they have to go to the music box. The bones of the tune are already there, users have to piece them together to complete the picture. The tune plays through when it’s been complete by the users.

Those who like faster games may not like it, but the game is challenging and delightful. The app is available free for download in the Android Market.
