0

Lenovo has announced a new Gingerbread smartphone, dubbed S2, at the Consumer Electronics Show 2012 in Las Vegas, USA. The smartphone has a rounded top and bottom. Lenovo has not announced the release dates or pricing of this smartphone. However, the company will make it available in China very soon.

Lenovo S2 sports a 3.8 inch touchscreen display with 480 x 800 pixel (WVGA) and rounded top and bottom edges. It houses a dual core 1.4 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255 mobile processor.

Lenovo has done something interesting &#151 it offers different configurations even for the smartphone! Lenovo S2 will be available in an 8 version with 512 and a 16 GB version with 1 GB RAM. Do note that smartphones don’t offer the flexibility to update the RAM as computers and laptops do.

This smartphone has an 8 snapper at the back and a 0.3 megapixel front facing camera for video calls and video chats. The Lenovo S2 smartphone has a micro USB port, 3.5 mm audio port and micro HDMI as well. By default, this smartphone will run 2.3 Gingerbread and will have Lenovo Magic 3.0 user interface integrated with it. Lenovo has added a modest 1500 battery.

In terms of specifications, this smartphone does seem fit for the first half of 2012, but will be able to compete only when it gets Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Lenovo has also announced its new Personal Cloud service that allows syncing multimedia and data between Android devices &#151 smartphones, tablets and even TVs. Personal Cloud is Lenovo’s new cloud server storage service for data backups, syncing, and streaming multimedia.

It is quite likely that this smartphone will stay limited to China and select regions of Europe and the US.

CES 2012: Sony Ericsson Xperia MT27i Pepper images leaked

0

At the Consumer Electronics Show 2012, Sony Ericsson is all ready to show a new breed of Xperia smartphones. Just before the actual launch day, images of the Sony Ericsson Xperia family with model number MT27i and codename ‘Pepper’ leaked online.

Xperia Blog showed the images of an Xperia MT27i Pepper prototype handset and also shared details about it.

The Mobile Indian already reported about the Sony Ericsson Nozomi handset with 720p display and dual core mobile processors earlier. From these recent reports we conclude that Pepper and Nozomi will be part of Sony Ericsson’s 2012 Xperia smartphone lineup.

Sony Ericsson Pepper MT27i will feature a 3.7 inch touchscreen display with 480 x 854 pixel native resolution. Under the hood, this smartphone may house an ST-Ericsson NovaThor U8500 mobile chipset. Ideally meant to be the successor of Xperia neo V, this new MT27i Pepper smartphone features a 5 megapixel camera capable of recording 720p HD video. Of course, the front facing camera is fairly visible in the images. There’s no detail about the operating system loaded on this handset but we presume it would be 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Next to the front facing camera rests the notification and the smartphone carries a design similar to the Nozomi handset except for the LED strip below the screen. The handset in the image is a prototype unit and the actual handset might be a wee bit different from it. The touchscreen panel also accommodates three capacitive buttons for home, back and menu. This handset can easily be slotted as a mid-high range smartphone with a pleasing set of features.

Sony Ericsson can be expected to show some smartphones and other products at the Consumer Electronics Show 2012.

AcerCloud: New cloud service from Acer

0

Taiwanese device manufacturer Acer has showcased its cloud service AcerCloud at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, USA.

AcerCloud allows users to store images and documents on the cloud without worrying about the physical storage of their device. Users will be able to access all these images and other documents from any PC, mobile phone or tablet manufactured by Acer that runs on Windows or Android.

AcerCloud will be rolled out across the world by the end of this year. Acer said in a statement, “Featuring Acer Always Connect technology, users can retrieve multimedia and data files anytime, even when their main PC is in sleep (standby/hibernation) mode. Users can enjoy these advantages knowing that their information is stored and transferred securely via strong and authentication.”

It seems Acer has taken a cue from Apple’s iCloud service that was launched last year.

Microsoft to venture out Xbox LIVE on iOS, Android

0

While the Windows Phone ecosystem continues to grow, Microsoft plans to take its existing platforms to next level. The software giant plans to take Xbox LIVE gaming platform to other mobile operating systems as well. The Live Side spotted a job posting at Microsoft’s Careers page which hinted company’s plan to push Xbox LIVE games to the Apple and Google platforms. Microsoft seeks a software development engineer for the extending the Xbox LIVE’s gaming experiences beyond Windows Phone.

Microsoft worked smartly and integrated the Xbox LIVE gaming experience in the Windows Phone platform for smartphones. Following that, Microsoft now plans to tap other mobile platforms to push the Xbox LIVE gaming experience and not just adding the leaderboards and messages app. Recently Microsoft added Kinectimals and Orbital game titles to the Xbox LIVE for Windows Phone 7 along with the usual popular titles such as Angry Birds and Minesweeper.

Do not confuse the Xbox LIVE with the Xbox Companion app released for Windows Phone platform. The Xbox LIVE app is already available for the iOS platform and allows messaging, managing friend lists, LIVE profile editing, changing Avataar features, and compare achievement progress with friends. However, there is no real-time gameplay support in this app.

Microsoft recently released Xbox Companion app that lets user control the multimedia on the Xbox console; browse TV shows, movie, music and game; and also get friends’ activity.

Neither of the Xbox LIVE apps currently available offer gaming support and it appears that Microsoft is planning to make it big in mobile gaming with that. The job listing’s description further provides the detail that Microsoft indeed would be working more to bring the Xbox LIVE mobile experiences to Android and iOS platforms. These experiences may include location-based gaming, social networking, avatar with presence, etc.

It is quite likely that Microsoft will tap the potential of bringing more Xbox LIVE games to all major mobile platforms such as Windows Phone, iOS and Android in near future. Also with a possibility that mobile gamers will get to enjoy gaming together in Peer-to-peer mode irrespective of mobile platform the smartphone runs. Though it doesn’t seem too farfetched, the company still has loads of work to do on the same.

The most interesting and attractive part of the Titan II smartphone is the 16-megapixel camera at the rear with lens (f2.6, 28mm). Samsung Chat On comes to iOS

0

Samsung, the global cellular equipment and consumer electronics manufacturer, has made its Chat On application available for iOS devices.

Announced last year, the Chat On app is an exclusive service for Samsung handset owners to connect with fellow Samsung users, making it somewhat similar to the BlackBerry Messenger service. Initially, the Chat On feature was available for Samsung’s Bada and Android handsets only, but later the Chat On application was made available for all Android devices, and now Samsung is back with more good news as the Chat On application makes its official entry into the iOS platform as well.

Chat On allows users to interact with friends and family via text, images, hand-written notes and videos. Chat On is available in two options including a basic functionality option for feature phone users, which allows sharing of text, pictures, calendar, contacts and emoticons. Smartphone users, meanwhile, can enjoy advanced feature options, enabling richer communication by allowing users to see how often they communicate with their buddies using the Interaction Rank feature, and allowing them to post comments on their buddies’ profile pages, along with all the basic chat features.

Samsung has also made plans for and the app’s future. The Chat On feature will soon also be available for BlackBerry and Windows Phone platforms through a standalone application.

The Samsung Chat On feature is compatible with all Android as well as iOS devices running Android version 2.2 and iOS version 4.2 and above. Users can visit the market using their devices or can also follow the given links to download the app on their devices.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus launched quietly

0

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus has made a quiet entry into India. The all new Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus is a lighter and improved version of its predecessor &#151 Galaxy Tab 7 &#151 with better software and hardware.

According to Mahesh Telecom, the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus will be available for Rs 26,990.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus comes with a dual core mobile with calling facility, and runs on 3.2 Honeycomb OS.

The new Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus GT-P6200 tablet comes with a dual core 1.2 GHz mobile processor along with 1 of &#151 twice the muscle power of its predecessor. Also, this tablet comes with the most recent graphic chip &#151 Mali-400, which is the same one used in the company’s current hot selling handset &#151 Galaxy S II GT-P9100.

The Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus features a 1024 x 600 pixel PLS display, apparently of better quality than the one in Galaxy Tab GT-P1000. Apart from basic hardware changes, even the operating system has seen a jump. The new Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus comes with Android 3.2 Honeycomb tablet operating system. Samsung has announced that Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus will get the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update whenever it is ready for release.

The rear camera with 3.15 image sensor is now capable of recording 720p video at 30 frames per second. Of course, there is a front facing camera for video calling or chat. It’s unclear whether Google Talk with Video is supported on this tablet.

Other features such as tri-band support for voice calling, WiFi, 3.0, accelerometer, gyroscopic sensor and remain the same. Samsung has packed the same 4000 mAh battery with the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, which promises of about 40 hours, and we expect better performance once Android 4.0 is released.

Samsung has played it smart by keeping the same form factor but has packed more muscle in the tablet. However, the price of Rs 26,990 will confuse the consumer and will force him to compare the device with Galaxy Tab 730 and other tablets that have a 10.1 inch screen, and are priced between Rs 26,000 and Rs 30,000.
