For long Nokia ruled the Windows mobile phone market but with Microsoft partnering with Indian device makers the hegemony has now come to an end. Micromax yesterday became the first Indian device maker to announce two smartphones with the latest Windows 8.1 operating system, namely -Canvas Win W121 and Canvas Win W092. The W121 is priced at Rs 9,500 while the Canvas Win 092 is priced at Rs 6,500. This means while the W121 is priced closely to Lumia 525, the W092 is much cheaper than the cheapest Lumia smartphone of Nokia – the Lumia 520 that costs Rs 7,499 these days.
So here we have compared the Lumia 525 of Nokia with the Canvas Win W121 of Micromax on the basis of their features.
Design and Display
The Nokia Lumia 525 comes with premium look and glossy body. It has changeable covers and comes in dazzling orange, radiant yellow and luminous white colours. On the other hand, the Canvas Win has a leather back panel and it has been hailed by many for its looks.
Now coming to the display, the Luma 525 has a 4 inch display 480×800 pixels resolution, thereby pushing 233 ppi pixel density. The Canvas Win W121 has a bigger 5 inch display and with HD Resolution and thus it has much better 293 ppi pixel density. Quite obviously, Micromax’s Canvas Win W121 looks much more lucrative in terms of design and display.
Performance
The Nokia Lumia 525 has a 1 GHz Snapdragon S4 dual core processor, Adreno 305 GPU, and 1 GB RAM. On the other hand, Canvas Win has a 1.2 GHz Snapdragon 200 quad core processor and 1 GB RAM. So it seems that the Micromax has a slight EDGE over the Lumia 525 when it comes to processing muscle.
The Lumia 525 has a 1430 mAh battery as compared to the 2000 mAh battery of Canvas Win. But here one should note that the Lumia 525 has less power requirement then Canvas Win as it has smaller display and a less power consuming dual core processor. As per Nokia, the Lumia 525 offers 17 hours of talktime on 2G or 10 hours of talktime on 3G. Micromax has not revealed anything yet about the battery back up of Win W121 but we do not expect much higher figures than that of Lumia 525.
Camera and Storage
The Nokia Lumia 525 comes armed with an 8 Megapixel rear auto focus camera and a 2 megapixel front camera. On the other hand, the Lumia 525 has a 5 megapixel auto focus rear camera but has not front camera.
On the storage front though the Lumia 525 is much better as it has 8 GB inbuilt storage and a 64 GB micro SD card slot while the new Canvas Win W121 has 8 GB inbuilt storage and a 32 GB expandable storage slot.
Connectivity
Micromax has cleverly armed the Canvas Win W121 with two SIM slots along with WiFi, WiFi hotspot, Bluetooth 4.0, and micro USB 2.0 port. It has also GPS with A-GPS for navigation.
The Lumia 525 too has WiFi, WiFi hotspot, Bluetooth 4.0, and micro USB 2.0 port. It has also GPS with A-GPS and GLONASS support. However, it comes with a single SIM slot only.
Conclusion
The Windows phone segment was stagnant for a long time, unlike its Android counterpart. Thus there was less option in the segment but with Indian device makers joining the Windows Phone league, things are expected to change for better. As far as the Canvas Win W121 is concerned, the device is certainly looks better than the Nokia Lumia 525 and we hope that it will perform as it promises on paper.
