OnePlus 3 vs OnePlus 3T: Is it worth an upgrade?

OnePlus 3 was already a flagship killer in our opinion and OnePlus managed to make a comeback after it struggled with the OnePlus 2.

What was believed to be just a rumour from OnePlus has now turned intro reality as the company has launched a its new 2016 flagship, OnePlus 3T. We don’t what T means here but it surely indicates more power. OnePlus 3 was already a flagship killer in our opinion and OnePlus managed to make a comeback after it struggled with the OnePlus 2. However, it came in as a surprise when the company decided to launch another variant of OnePlus 3. OnePlus 3T is launched at $439 (approx. Rs 29,800). But, is it worth an upgrade?

Design and Display

In terms of both design and display, both the phones are identical and there is no difference at all. Both the devices come with the same metallic design wrapping a beautiful 5.5 inch 1080p Optic-AMOLED display. The camera hump is still there. However, OnePlus 3T will not come in Graphite color variant, instead it will sell in a new Gunmetal color variant apart from Soft Gold.

Processor and Memory

Processor is what is considered one of the most important updates in the OnePlus 3T. While the OnePlus 3 sports a 2.15 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, OnePlus 3T will come with a 2.35 GHz Snapdragon 821 processor. Both the phones come with Adreno 530 for graphics and 6 RAM for multi-tasking. Also, the 64 GB internal storage is there with OnePlus 3T, you get an option to upgrade to 128 GB which in this case also is not expandable as well. Both the phones run on 6.0.1 Marshmallow. However, we expected OnePlus to launch the OnePlus 3T with Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box.

Camera

There is no difference in the rear camera though the new OnePlus 3T comes with Sapphire glass protection for the rear facing lens. The front camera however, saw a massive upgrade from 8 megapixels to 16 megapixels with a lower size of 1.0 microns compared to 1.4 on OnePlus 3. The rear camera, as mentioned above, is a 16 shooter with f/2.0, phase detection autofocus, OIS, flash and 1.12 micron pixel size.

Battery and Connectivity

Battery is another segment where OnePlus 3T shines as it comes with a larger 3400 battery compared to 3000 mAh on the original OnePlus 3.

Other than that, Connectivity options remain same which include 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, GPS, NFC, v4.2, USB Type-C, Dual (Nano + Nano) capability and both the devices also sport a fingerprint scanner embedded in the home button.

Should you upgrade?

Well, if you already own a OnePlus 3 and cursing yourself to have done so, we would recommend you to not upgrade as in terms of performance both the devices are expected to be same even though there is a bigger battery, better front facing camera and Snapdragon 821. However, if you were waiting to buy OnePlus 3, we would surely recommend you spend a little more for OnePlus 3T. Though, OnePlus hasn’t discussed the availability of the device in India, we expect it to come soon with a price point of Rs 30,000 for 64 GB and Rs 33,000 for 128 GB. For people wanting to buy Google’s Pixel, we would easily recommend you to ditch Pixel / Pixel XL for the new OnePlus 3T.
