Yu Yunique First Impression

At Rs 4,999, Yu Yunique has decent looks and features.

Micromax’s subsidiary brand, Yu yesterday announced the launch of its cheapest phone – Yunique. Also at Rs 4,999, it is one of the cheapest smartphones, competing with ZTE Blade Qlux 4G, Lenovo A2010 and Phicomm Energy 653.

Design

Yu Yunique

The Yu Yunique has borrowed some design language from its predecessor, the Yu Yuphoria, as well as from its Micromax siblings. The treatment of the rear camera is like that of Yuphoria while the overall design resembles that of recent Micromax smartphones like the Canvas A1 that includes the matte finish body.

Due to matte finishing and curved sides, it is extremely comfortable to hold. Unlike other smartphones, it does not have a separate RIM. Its back panel extends to cover the phone from all four sides as well.

There’s a big power button in the right hand side, on either side of which are the volume rockers. The back panel, as I said earlier, has a big rear camera panel. As you can see in the pictures also, the camera panel is a protruding unit, whether such arrangement harms the lens or not is remains to be seen and we will definitely talk about that during our detailed review later.

There is a big speaker grill towards the bottom of the back panel as well. The Yunique has a micro USB port and a 3.5 mm jack as well.

Overall, the Yu Yunique is a pretty little handset which is designed well to attract eye balls and is comfortable to use at the same time.

Features

The Yu Yunique has a 4.7 inch display which is said to have 3 protection so hopefully it will be immune to scratches that often occurs in devices due to regular usages. The screen has high definition (1280×720 pixels) and thus offers pretty decent 312 ppi pixel density. During our short interaction, I found the display quite responsive.

The Yunique has 8GB internal storage and 32GB expandable storage slot. It also has USB OTG functionality so you can use a pen drive with it directly via an OTG cable to further extend its memory.

The smartphone is powered by a 1.2 quad-core Snapdragon 410 which is paired with Adreno 306 graphics processor and 1 – a decent combination but not something unheard of in this price range. On Antutu benchmark, the phone also scored decent 20000. But ofcourse that doesn’t mean it can handle all types of games and can multitask with ease. We will test it more to ascertain how capable is this smartphone.

Yu Yunique

The Yu Yunique offers an 8 rear camera and a 2 megapixel front camera – both of which seems decent as far as our first interaction is concerned. You can see few pictures that we have clicked using the cameas of Yu Yunique here. Ofcourse, we will do more tests in various other lightings to check out its cameras.

The Yu Yunique comes pre-installed with the the latest Lollipop operating system and has almost the vanilla Android interface and it also supports many Indian languages.

Yu Yunique

Connectivity wise too the Yu Yunique is decent with dual SIM, 4G, WiFi, WiFi Hotspot, 4.0, micro USB 2.0, USB host, GPS with and GLONASS. The Yunique offers FM with recording option and a 2000 non-removable battery that claims to offer 7 hours of talk time.

Verdict

Spec wise the Yu Yunique is nothing unique but certainly sounds like a good smartphone. It has appealing looks but everything will depend on its performance. We are currently reviewing the phone and will soon come out with an in-depth review.
