Vivo has today announced the launch of its latest smartphone, the Vivo V17 Pro in India. The smartphone comes with a price tag of Rs 29,990 and it will be available for purchase from Flipkart, Amazon, Paytm Mall and more starting from September 27, 2019.
The Vivo V17 Pro is loaded with a host of interesting features and it looks like a refined version of its predecessor, the Vivo V15 Pro. The smartphone now comes with a dual-selfie pop-up selfie camera along with a quad-camera setup at the rear panel. This coupled with some decent hardware, makes it one of the best offering from Vivo. However, do you really need to buy this smartphone? We spent some time with the device and here our first impressions.

The smartphone comes with some added protection at the rear with Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protection, while for the front, the company has added new protection of Schott Xensation UP. In terms of build quality, the smartphone looks solid and it is comfortable to hold in your hand. Additionally, the company has added a protective layer both at the front and rear.

Talking about ports placement, the front features a large display with 91.65 per cent screen-to-body ratio. The right side features volume controls and power on/off button, while the left is loaded with a dedicated Google Assistant key. The base of the phone is loaded with a dual-SIM slot along with a USB Type-C port and a speaker grille, while the top features a pop-up selfie mechanism along with a 3.5mm audio jack. The back panel features a quad-camera setup at the top-centre position and the LED flash is placed at the middle of the camera setup. That said, the Vivo V17 Pro sure looks premium, though it is a bit heavy.
Coming to the display, the Vivo V17 Pro features a 6.44-inch Full HD+ FullView Super AMOLED Display with a screen Resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels and 20:9 aspect ratio and 100 per cent DCI-P3 colour gamut. The display is bright with 500nits brightness and it comes with decent viewing angles. We will talk more about this in our upcoming review.
Hardware and Software
In terms of hardware, the Vivo V17 Pro is powered by a 2.0GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 Processor along with Adreno 612 GPU. The phone is backed by 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. That said, for this price tag, the Vivo V17 Pro surely looks overpriced as we have some really good smartphones at this price range. The list includes Xiaomi Redmi K20 Pro that is priced at Rs 29,999 and it is powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor. Then we have OnePlus 6T, Samsung Galaxy A70 and even Vivo’s flagship, the Vivo NEX that is priced around Rs 30,000.
On the software front, the phone runs on FunTouch 9, which is based on Android 9.0 Pie. The user interface features an Apple-inspired look and it comes with a noticeable amount of bloatware including third-party apps like Facebook, Paytm, Webnovel, WhatsApp, Dailyhunt, Gaana, PhonePe and Zomato.
Camera
On the camera front, the phone is equipped with a quad-camera setup at the rear panel. The rear cameras come with a combination of 48-megapixel Sony IMX582 sensor with f/1.8 aperture, a 13-megapixel telephoto lens with 2x Optical Zoom and 10x digital zoom, an 8-megapixel super-wide-angle lens with 120-degree FOV and f/2.2 Aperture and a 2-megapixel depth sensor with f/2.4 aperture. For the front, it comes with a dual-selfie pop-up camera with a 32-megapixel primary sensor and an 8-megapixel wide-angle lens with moonlight flash.
The phone is equipped with different camera modes including Night, Portrait, Photo, Video, 48MP, Pano, Live Photo, Slo-Mo, Time-Lapse, Pro, AR Stickers, Jovi and Doc. The camera performance seems to be pretty good in the daylight conditions as the camera clicked some good photos with sharp focus and good detailing. The low light shots came out to be decent as well. The selfie performance is decent as well and you get an option to choose between normal and wide-angle mode.
Battery and Connectivity
In terms of battery, the Vivo V17 Pro is backed by a 4000mAh battery along with 18W dual-engine Fast charging support. The battery should ideally last one full day under normal usage. On the connectivity front, it supports dual 4G VoLTE, Bluetooth 5.0, WiFi, GPS, GLONASS, dual-SIM, 3.5mm Audio Jack and USB Type-C port. The phone measures 159 x 74.7 x 9.8mm and weighs 201.8 grams.
