0

The much anticipated low cost tablet, Aakash, which will priced at Rs 3,000, will not be launched this year.

A spokesperson of DataWind, the Canadian company that is manufacturing Aakash, said to The Mobile Indian, “An improved version of Aakash tablet will be available in retail outlets by January end.”

The tablet was to be made available in retail stores by the end of November. The spokesperson said, “The delay in the availability of the tablet has been due to upgradation in the tablet and some unforeseen delay in manufacturing.”

The upgraded version of Aakash powered by Android 2.2 will have a resistive touchscreen, Cortex A8-700 processor with graphics accelerator and video processor, 256 MB of RAM and 2 of internal memory.

Other specifications are a one standard port, 3.5 mm audio jack, a 7 inch display with 800 x 480 resolution, resistive touchscreen, and WiFi support.

Suneet Singh Tuli, chief executive officer of DataWind, had earlier said to The Mobile Indian, “Products from Samsung and Apple are for the elite class and we cannot match them at the price we are offering. We are making good quality products in India for Indians at an affordable price.”

On future course of action, he had said, “We have not set a time frame for future launches but we are working on 9 and 10 inch Android tablets. They will have capacitive touchscreens and we will try to keep them under Rs 5,000.”

Intel Atom based smartphones coming next year

0

Intel, world’s largest chip maker, plans to bring smartphones based on its Atom processors. The smartphones will be based on operating system and Atom processor.

Speaking at the Intel cloud summit, R Ravichandran who is Intel’s India and South Asia sales director, said, “Google TV, which uses Intel processors has already debuted. So are Ultrabooks and tablets with Intel processors. Next year, you will see smartphones with Atom cores make their debut,”

Atom based tablets are already available with as many as 35 companies were using the new platform in the first half of 2011 or later. Intel has already said that the devices wouldn’t just be limited to Windows 7 or Intel’s own MeeGo (Now dead) and would use Android as well.

Intel had announced the availability of its first Atom designed for smartphones and tablets in mid-2010.

The chip, which was earlier known as Moorestown, is now called Z600. It provides average 4-5 hours of battery life for cellular browsing or video viewing but over 10 days of standby and about 2 days of audio.

The chipmaker had also claims much better performance than a typical smartphone, with about 1.5 to 3 times more raw computing power as well as a GMA 600 graphics core that supplies more visual details through OpenGL ES 2.0 and hardware video acceleration. It can record video at 720p and play it back at 1080p. Z600 also supports Hyper threading, which means that it behaves like two cores in certain cases. In burst mode, the chip very briefly spikes performance when needed.

To keep the footprint small, Intel is using a full system-on-a-chip with the graphics and most other components built in the chip itself.

Intel is providing different processors to the OEMs (Original equipment manufacturers) – chips up to 1.5 GHz for smartphones and 1.9 GHz for tablets.

Notably, today even Quad core chips are now available for smartphones. It will be interesting to see how Intel manages to compete as a late comer to the space.

Google has already released the Android version optimised for x86 architecture (which is suitable for intel’s processors), which means that smartphones using Atom processors are not that far off.

Divided opinion on newly introduced mobile app rating system

0

A new mobile rating system, similar to the video game rating system already in place, has been introduced by the wireless trade industry association (CTIA) and Entertainment Software Rating Board. The new rating system will guide the parents and children whenever mobile apps show inappropriate content. The rating system from Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) will have seven classifications, right from “Early Childhood” to “Adults Only”.

The rollout schedule will differ as per different mobile app stores, and the rating process will be quick as per the statement released by ESRB. “When developers submit their applications to a participating storefront they will be able to complete a detailed yet quick multiple choice questionnaire that is designed to assess an application’s content and context with respect to its age-appropriateness,” said ESRB in a statement.
Once the answers have been provided by the developers, the apps will be rated promptly.

BlackBerry is bringing the proposed app rating system to its app store – BlackBerry App World. “Our content rating system has been planned out based on input from our carrier, consumer, and developer partners to make sure we’ve implemented a content rating system that helps parents control what types of content their children have access to,” said RIM, the makers of BlackBerry, on its official blog.

Google and Apple, however, have a different point of view. Apple is reportedly in favour of its own rating system and the Google view is no different.

“We’ve put a lot of effort into Market’s rating system, which now works well globally,” said Google spokesman Christopher Katsaros some time back. “While we support other systems, we think it’s best for Android users and developers to stick with Android’s existing ratings.”
