P&G and Mobeam makes mobile couponing possible

0

As strange it may sound, but right now the bar scanners that you see in stores can’t read the bar code displayed on your phones’ screen. This is because of the reflective screen.

This has been the biggest limiting factor for the mobile couponing industry but now Procter & Gamble is partnering with Mobeam to bring in a technology that will clear all these roadblocks.

Mobile coupons are similar to discount coupons that you get when you buy a product or as part of a special marketing campaign delivered to you on your phone.

The technology, created by Mobeam of California, coverts the barcode data into a beam of light that can be read by barcode scanners already found at store checkout counters. No additional point of sale (POS) equipment is needed.

The couponing represents a growing $3.7 billion segment of the consumer packaged goods (CPG) market in North America, with more than 300 billion coupons distributed every year and redemption on the increase as consumers strive for greater value and savings. Even in India the market though small is growing at an exponential pace.

Technology like these can further fuel this growth especially in the growth markets like India, where shopkeepers and stores are slow in adopting new technologies.

However, things are not as rosy as it sounds. Mobeam will have to integrate this technology at the core of the smartphones, and for that they need support from phone makers.

MoBeam is already in talks with leading phone makers, names of which they have not disclosed. Notably, Samsung Venture Investment Corp, an investment arm of Samsung, recently invested money in Mobeam.

“Mobeam is working with handset manufacturers to engineer its light-based communications technology into new lines of handsets. P&G, mobeam and other partners expect to test the technology in market in 2012,” Mobeam said in a statement.

While P&G, which owns Vicks, Head and Shoulders, Ariel and Pantene brands, has a huge presence in India, it has not started it eCoupon buiness in India. But with this technology Indian foray into this sector would become much easier for the company.

Boosting location based iOS apps

0

Location based apps have received a lot of attention, but a survey suggests they haven’t become mainstream yet. According to the survey conducted by Forrester, only five percent adult mobile phone users in US are using location aware apps right now, which is on the lower side compared to other popular apps, such as Google services or Facebook app.

So what is it that stops the users from accessing these location-aware apps?

Usually, such apps ask users to go through multiple steps, though once they actually use these apps they may get hooked to these. For example, while using Gowalla or Foursquare, a user has to open the then press the check in button, choose a place, and then confirming checking in.

However, voice assistant apps like Apple’s Siri may reduce the required number of steps while using location based apps.

For this to work, the developers however would need access to the application programing interface of Siri or other similar voice assistants built by other companies.

Mujjo to launch gloves for capacitive screen of mobiles

0

Dutch-based Mujjo, a brand associated with manufacturing of gloves for capacitive touchscreen based devices, has announced its entry in to the Indian market as well. With this the brand aims at launching its products for Indian customers in the coming few days. The capacitive gloves which are manufactured by Mujjo allow users to operate capacitive touchscreen based devices without having the need to expose their hands in the cold weather.

Capacitive touchscreen work on the principle of electrical conductivity and since our body is a good conductor of electricity every time users touches the touchscreen with bare hands, a small electrical charge is sent to the area touched on the device. This electrical charge allows the capacitive touchscreen to sense the location of the touch and initiate an action.

This is the reason why regular and other things don’t work on capacitive touch screens. The Mujjo gloves are made of silver-coated nylon fibers knitted into the fabric of the glove. These silver-coated nylon fibers make the gloves conductive and therefore touchscreen compatible allowing electrical charge to travel from the fingertips on to the screen without the discomfort.

Also since the silver fibers are knitted in to the gloves it makes the whole area of the glove touchscreen friendly and not just the tips as found on many other similar products.

The gloves, as we mentioned earlier, also will be made available for purchase in India in the coming few days.

Spokesperson for the company said to The Mobile Indian, “Users will be able to buy them for a price of Rs 1,700.”

It looks a bit expensive but for the comfort many users would definitely like this product. For more information users can simply log on to the Mujjo website.
