CES 2012: Polaroid Android device with 16 megapixel camera

0

International camera and eyewear brand, Polaroid, has announced its entry into the market with its first ever Android tablet during the Consumer Electronics Show 2012 in Las Vegas, USA.

The Polaroid SC1630 tablet features a high definition 16 camera with built in 3X optical zoom, which is by far the highest ever supported by any Android device. Apart from being just a 16 megapixel camera, the Polaroid SC1630 is a full-fledged Android device with a 3.2 inch touchscreen, WiFi capability and even cellular connectivity, which will be made available later.

Although the Polaroid SC1630 device falls short of expectations as a tablet, it surely impresses with its unique combination of new age technology and superior optics that has more utility than any average or even high end camera.

Polaroid SC1630 is fully capable of connecting to Google’s Android Market from where users can download and use most applications available on the catalog, which thus adds much more utility to it as a portable entertainment device and even as an ebook reader.

The Polaroid SC1630 is fully capable of recording high definition videos and photographs. The tablet also allows users to instantly review and edit pictures and videos alike. By using its WiFi and optional cellular connectivity, users can share data with their friends with just a touch. The Smart Album feature of Polaroid SC1630 also automatically organises photos by date, location and people. With geo-tagging features, users can add longitude and latitude coordinates to photos as well.

“Polaroid has helped the world bring stories to life through photographs for the past 75 years,” said Scott W Hardy, president, Polaroid. “The newest member of the Polaroid family, Polaroid SC1630 smart camera, unites the beauty of high-end digital images with powerful Android connectivity features. The result is an instant experience of click, capture and share that enables social networks to see and experience the moment as if they were there.”

Although the product seems exciting, its real world performance will only be known once it is available in the market. Polaroid has not announced the availability of the tablet yet, but it is expected that we will soon be getting more information on that.

CES 2012: Viewsonic unveils cheapest Android ICS tablet

0

Viewsonic, the brand well known for its display technologies and products, have announced the launch of a range of new based products during the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show 2012, USA. With this, Viewsonic has added a total of three new Android based tablets and an Android based smartphone to its existing line up of products.

All three models – ViewPad E70, ViewPad 10pi and ViewPad 10e – are due to hit the market in the next few months. Along with that the Viewsonic ViewPhone 3, a dual SIM based Android smartphone, will also be hitting the shelves along with these tablets soon.

The ViewPad E70 is by far the most exciting proposition ever revealed during the CES. The tablet features a 7-inch display and runs on a 1 GHz processor with the latest Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. It packs in 4 of storage space along with a front-facing camera, 1080p HDMI output, WiFi connectivity and a Micro SD slot for extra memory and storage. What makes it a good proposition is its price which has been kept really low making it the cheapest Android ICS based tablet so far at $169.99 or Rs 8,700 approximately.

The next in line is the ViewPad 10pi which is a dual-boot capable tablet featuring Android 2.3 Gingerbread and Windows 7 Professional. So users can choose to use any of the given operating systems as per need and requirement. To power this tablet, Viewsonic has provided the Intel Oak Trail z670 processor which was also announced during the CES. It has a big 10 inch display with 1280×800 resolution. Along with this the tablet will also feature both frontal and rear cameras. Priced at $849 (Rs 44,000 approximately), this will be slightly costlier than the existing premium tablets available as of today.

ViewPad 10e also features a 10-inch display with a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution, measuring only 9.1mm in thickness. This tablet is powered by a 1 GHz process as well. The operating system on this will be Android 2.3 Gingerbread without any announcement on the ICS upgrade as well.

Last but not the least, Viewsonic also announced the launch of its ViewPhone 3 smartphone. The ViewPhone 3 is a dual SIM based Android smartphone based on Android Gingerbread 2.3 operating system with an 800 processor and a 3.5 inch display. But just like the ViewPad 10 devices the ViewPhone 3 also misses out on the ICS upgrade announcement, but we hope that after CES Viewsonic will shed some more light on this.

Both the ViewPad 10 pi and ViewPad 10e tablets are due for launch in Latin America later this month following closely by the launch of the ViewPad E70 along with the ViewPhone 3 due for launch in the month of March this year. International availability including the availability in India will be announced later on.

CES 2012: Dell to launch tablet later this year

0

Dell, a multinational manufacturer of computers and mobile devices, is keen on launching a tablet globally but it might be launched towards the end of this year.

Chief commercial officer of Dell, Steve Felice in an interview with Reuters revealed the information where he also mentioned that the US-based company will be entering the market in a big way, but they will not be making the entry in to the market anytime sooner and that the tablet is expected to reach the markets by the end of this year.

Dell is taking time to understand the ecosystem well and they do not want anything to go wrong. Hence they are studying the market and the needs of customers, on the basis of which the product will be designed.

According to Steve Felic, the tablet will be meant for both the general consumer as well as professionals.

Dell has in the past released products based on Windows and operating systems but there is no information as on what platform the new tablet will be based on. But looking at the products that have been launched till now by Dell – a 10 inch Windows based tablet but a smaller 7 inch screen based Android device, there is a greater possibility that the PC maker may choose Android as the for the upcoming tablet which could also have a 10 inch display.

Intel has been constantly in talks with both cellphone and tablet manufacturers for the adoption of the Intel Atom low power consuming processors. Lenovo has also unveiled its Intel Atom powered Android smartphone just recently &#151 the Lenovo K800. The K800 features a 4.5-inch touchscreen display supporting 720p native resolution. First Look: Sony Xperia S

0

Sony has recently announced its new Xperia S smartphone during the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, USA. Though the model displayed has Sony Ericsson mark on it, it will come with Sony branding when it hits the stores some time during March this year.

The phone, which comes in a bar form factor, looks like any standard phone. However, a transparent strip below the screen adds flavour to the design. The strip has a touch sensitive button sign on it but the buttons are actually just above it.

Xperia S is a pretty powerful smartphone with a 1.5 GHz dual core Snapdragon MSM 8206 coupled with 1 of RAM, and it shows on the performance with absolutely no lag in executing the commands.

The display is a 4.3 inch one with 1280X720 and runs Android 2.3.7 operating system. The videos and the pictures come out very lively on the screen and video playback is very smooth.

There is also a 12 camera capable of recoding full HD video which utilises Sony’s Exmor sensor technology that helps in taking quality images in low light conditions as well. Also, Xperia S comes with a single flash though dual LED flash would have been a lot better. Another important feature that has been added is the ability to switch on the camera directly by a long press of the camera button even while the phone is in standby mode.

On the user interface front, Sony has done away with the usual Timescape UI. Instead, Xperia S has a new minimalist user interface with some nice fluid backgrounds which looks great on the HD screen of the phone.

Sony Xperia S scores well on the connectivity front also with 3G, WiFi, and NFC capability. However, HDMI slot is missing in the smartphone. Sony Xperia S has a 1750 battery which should be enough for a day’s usage. But the powerful processor might drain out the battery sooner than expected.

TheSony Xperia S smartphone is no doubt very powerful and will offer a good user experience at least in terms of performance. The user interface might change when Sony comes out with the Android 4.0 update which it will be getting for sure, and then a new may be deployed.
