HMD Global has announced that it is extending the support for rolling out security patches to older Nokia-branded smartphones. The company has revealed that it will be extending the support for Nokia 8, Nokia 6, Nokia 5 and Nokia 3 smartphones.
HMD Global earlier promised that it will provide two years of major OS update and two years of regular security patches for its range of smartphones. The two-year period for the models in the year 2017 draws to a close. However, the company has revealed that it will now provide quarterly security patch updates right through to the end of the 3rd year, meaning that the smartphones will get the updates till the end of 2020.
The brand has said that Nokia 3 will be the first smartphone to receive quarterly security patch updates starting from September 2019 until September 2020. The Nokia 5 will get quarterly patch updates starting from October 2019 until October 2020. Nokia 8 smartphone will get the updates from October 2019 to October 2020.
Furthermore, the Nokia 6 smartphone will get the updates from October 2019 to October 2020. However, the company notes Nokia 6 sold on Amazon in the US and India will get security patch support only till October 2019. HMD Global will also provide security patch updates to the Nokia 2, however, it says the security patch support will conclude on November 2019.
Meanwhile, the company has revealed that it has scheduled an event at the IFA 2019, which will be held in Berlin. HMD Global, Chief Product Officer, Juho Sarvikas has shared an invite poster for Nokia’s upcoming launch event on Twitter.
The invite, however, does not reveal the name of smartphones to be unveiled at the event. It only mentions the date for the IFA 2019 event which will be held at 4:00 PM local time. It is expected that the company will be unveiling Nokia 6.2 and Nokia 7.2 smartphones, which are codenamed as Daredevil and Star-Lord respectively. Along with Nokia 6.2 and 7.2, the company is also expected to announce one or two feature phones too.
