Face off: Nokia X vs Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2

While Nokia X is armed with good looks and brings freshness to the low end Android segment, the Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2 has better features.

Nokia X, the cheapest among the three Nokia smartphones, has finally been launched in India. The other two phones, Nokia X+ and Nokia XL, will be launched in the country in next two months.

The Nokia X has been priced at Rs 8,599 for the Indian market. At this price, you can also buy the Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2. Here thus we have compared the two handsets on the basis of their features which will give you some idea about their worth.

Design and Display

During its launch, the Nokia India guys prominently talked about the ruggedness of Nokia X. They even showed how it can withstand falls on tough surfaces. There is nothing like that when it comes to Galaxy S Duos 2.

The Nokia X measures 115.5 mm x 63 mm x 10.4 mm (height, width, thickness) and it weighs 128.7 grams. On the other hand, the Samsung phone measures 121.5x 63.1×10.57 mm and weighs 118 grams. Not only dimension, both the phones also come with 4 inch display that too with the same 480×800 pixels resolution.

However, the similarties vis-a-vis looks ends in figures only. The Nokia X comes in bright Green, Yellow, White, Black, Orange, and Cyan colours. And like Android Lumia range, the Nokia X has also been hailed by many for its gorgeous looks. On the other hand, Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2 comes in “boring” black and white options.

The Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2 has 4 ROM, 64 GB micro SD card slot, and 768 RAM. The Nokia X too comes with 4 GB ROM but it has only 512 MB RAM and 32 GB slot.

There is a 3 fixed focus camera in the back of Nokia X. This camera has 4X facility, f/2.8 aperture, and a 1/5 inch sensor. This camera has minimum focus range of 50 cm and being a fixed focus unit, it will always be difficult to capture a shake-free image. There is no flash or a front camera in Nokia X either.

On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2 has a 5 megapixel rear camera with auto focus capability. To assist this camera in low light, there is an LED flash in the back of the phone too. Also, there is a 0.3 megapixel camera in the front of the phone.

OS and Processor

Nokia X come with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean based Nokia X platform. It does not provides access to the Google Play store. In Nokia X, you can only download apps from Nokia store or few third party app stores. The phone itself comes pre-loaded with several popular applications like Viber, Facebook, Twitter, and few EA as well as Gameloft games (but at this point of time I cannot vouch for their quality). But all these cannot replace the vastness of Google Play store.

As any other traditional Android smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2 has full access to the Google Play store, so you need not to bother about number of pre-loaded apps; you can download as many as you want (ofcourse it depends on the storage).

The Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2 S7582 comes with a 1.2 GHz dual core against the 1 GHz Snapdragon S4 dual core processor of Nokia X. However, the Samsung handset has 768 MB RAM which is expected to make it a bit faster than the Nokia X which has only 512 MB RAM. But do not expect much of a difference; infact, many a times it has been observed that a well optimised device gives better performance and anyway in this case both essentially come with dual core processor.

The Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2 comes with a 1500 battery which claims to provide up to 8 hours of talktime or 280 hours of standby on networks.

The Nokia X too comes with a 1500 mAh battery and it claims to provide upto 10.5 hours of talktime and 28 hours or 672 hours of maximum standby on 3G network.

Connectivity and Other Features

The Nokia X comes with dual with dual standby feature as the Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2. Both are 3G handsets as well and have WiFi, port, and even Bluetooth. The Nokia webpage says that the Nokia X has but it does not speak about GPS. On the other hand, Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2 has GPS along with A-GPS support. Nokia X has also the Nokia Here app while you can use the Google Maps in the Samsung phone.

Both the phones come with multi-format supporting music and video players. They have also FM radio support.

So we can summarise that Nokia X is meant for those who are not that fanatic about apps but is particular about the looks and durability of applications. However the Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2 looks better than Nokia X in two key areas – camera and storage.

Also, Nokia X has a tile interface like Windows which first time smartphone users will find it easy to use.

Ofcourse the on-ground behaviour of the two phones are yet to be ascertained but we will be coming out with detailed reviews of both phones in coming days. Meanwhile, you can also check out our First Cut of Nokia X here.
